18 Newport, (R.I.) Doilv News, Mondoy, July 15,1974 Casino favorite hungry for win By ELLIOTT K. STEIN Daily News Sports Writer Chico Hagey is a big (6-3Vz, 180 pounds) likeable young man but you can almost sense the snarl underneath when you speak with him about his chances of winning the USLTA National Amateur Men's Grass Court Championships. "I will go for it," Hagey said simply about the tournament beginning today at the Newport Casino. His single-minded devotion to winning, to taking charge of a match, can be gleaned from other things he said during a weekend interview at the Casino. "I must remember to concentrate on the point I'm playing -not the title." "You can only concentrate on one thing at a time." "Try as hard as you can and accept the results." "The players here are all of professional caliber.

We're fighting for the title because it will give us professional status when we turn pro." "I probably will turn pro this summer or fall. Winning this championship will be very helpful for my pro status." Hagey, just rounding into top form after breaking his leg in 1972 at Forest Hills, is a member of the fabulous Stanford University varsity team a team that is so strong that All- Americas are often found sitting out a match. He joins teammates Tim Noonan and Glenn Golden for the National Amateur, returning here to Newport after an absence of 59 years. Seeded No. 1 for the Newport event, Hagey this year has won the Men's Open at Ojai, and was runnerup in the NCAA's and the California State Open, a state tournament that is usually tougher than many national and regional competitions.

Before losing in the championship round in the California Open, Hagey defeated Tom Leonard, 20th-ranked U.S. professional, Roy Earth and Jim Delaney. Leonard has posted victories over Rod Laver, Tom Gorman, Bjorn Borg and Jan Kodes. Hagey lost the finals of the NCAA to Stanford's top-ranked John Whitlinger, but earlier had beaten Alabama's first- ranked Mike Cahill and National Amateur Clay Court Champion Victor Amaya. If he wins here, it will not be the first national title for Hagey.

He was Boys 16 and Boys 16 Hardcourt titlist, and doubles champion with Mexican-born Raul Ramirez in the juniors. Before his leg injury, he was rated No. 39 in the country in 1972 and No. 16 in singles. And he was just 19 at the time.

He describes his leg injury as some sort of a record at Forest Hills. "I plowed into the fence on the first point of the first game and broke my right leg. It was the quickest anyone ever retired from a match in Forest Hills' history." Hagey was born in Wilmette, 111., and lived in the Chicago area until he was 9. The year before that he took up tennis and fortunately for him, his family then moved to San Diego, right Senior Babe Ruth action CHICO HAGEY One point at a time in the middle of California's mad tennis country. He got acquainted there with Ramirez, his winning partner in the national junior doubles.

They attended LaJolla High School, the breeding ground for many top players, both men and women. Although Ramirez went on to the University of Southern California and Hagey to Stanford, they kept up their tennis partnership, which Hagey says he hopes they'll continue in the pros. "I know I can win in the pros after I get the experience and the competition I need against the best. Meanwhile, Raul and I can win enough at doubles to keep us going financially." Does he have any regrets about the way his tennis career has gone to date? Only one, said the handsome Stanford ace. "I wish I had learned the two-handed shot.

I've never seen a bad one. It always seems to fit the person using it. Maybe it's because it's self taught. It's like a baseball swing, powerful and quicker." Jim Connors and Chris Evert, Wimbledon champions, can attest to that. As for the rules under which this week's tourney is being played, Hagey said, "I like VASSS scoring.

All the players agree it's a very exciting system. You can't fall asleep." Portsmouth sews up title Scoring nine runs in the second inning, Portsmouth's undefeated Senior Babe Ruth team beat Packer Braman, 11-3, last night at Carolines Field. Portsmouth, with an 11-0 record, is the Eastern Division champion. Newport Motor Inn won two games over the weekend, downing Middletown Red, 8-3 and Newport Boys' Jamestown, playing at home, repulsed the Boys' Club, 5-2; Middletown Red earned an even break by toppling Packer Braman, 84, and Middletown White stopped Perrotti's, Newport Division leader, 3-1. The only Braman hits off Portsmouth's Jeff McKee were Pete Medeiros' triple and Andy Meehan's single.

Steve Alfonso and McKee each had two hits and Chris Seveney doubled for Portsmouth. Mickey DeCosta, Motor Inn, scattered eight Red hits. Jim Cottrell, Keith Stokes and Todd Morgan had two hits each for Motor Inn. Ned Corcoran, Tim Murphy and Damon Bell led the Reds' attack with two singles. Kevin O'Connor pitched a three-hitter for Motor Inn against the Boys' Club.

Cottrell slashed three hits and drove in as many runs. Tim Murphy's double was the big hit when Middletown Red scored five runs in the third to gain a commanding lead over Packer Braman. Meehan and Medeiros each rapped two hits for the losers. Mike Swistak, Braman catcher sustained a fractured finger when he was hit by a foul tip. David Alves of Middletown White held Perrotti's to four hits.

He also starred at bat, driving in two runs. Chico Davis, Middletown White, had two hits, one a triple. Chuck Corey pitched a five-hitter for Perrotti's and did not issue a pass. John Palmer had two hits, one a triple, for the losers. Middletown White Reynolds, rf, 4-0-0; Davis, 2b, 4-2-2; Alves, 3-0-0; Rich, cf.

ANNE'S, England AP) This place is not very popular with American golfers. It has one of the most famous seaside courses in the world, but no American has won the British Open Championship here for 48 years.

When Jack Nicklaus failed to catch Gary Player Saturday, and the little South African won his third British Open title, the jinx kept its grip. The last time the championship was staged here was in 1969, when Britain's Tony Jacklin won it. Since then, it has none around the big courses of England and Scotland, and Americans have chalked up an unbroken string of victories. Now this taxing course of windsuept and bushes has beaten the Americans again. Player won with a 72-hole total of 282, Britain's Peter Oosterhuis was second with 286, and Nicklaus, the best of the Americans, finished third at 287.

Johnny Miller, top money winner on the U.S. circuit this year, was one of the Americans whose hopes were shattered Knights shade Ship Yard girls Sandy Migneault smashed two home runs as she led the Knights of Columbus to a 15-11 win over Newport Ship Yard in the Class Girls' Softball league Saturday at Hunter Field. Ronda Fleming homered and hit two singles, and Sheila and Eva Phillips each had three singles. The Shipyard's top batters were Mary Cauley, with a homer and two singles; Joan Wilson and Ginni Alvarez, each with three singles, and Debbie Asher, with two doubles. among the sandtraps of the inward nine holes.

He finished 10th with 294. "For Americans playing British courses, it is like rolling dice," Miller said. "You can roll them just right, but you don't know what numbers are coining up. "I made four mistakes in my final round and every mistake cost me either a bogey or double bogey." It will be another five or six years before the Americans or anybody get another chance to play the Lytham and St. Anne's jinx.

Player, 37, the most con- vincing winner of the British Open for years, said the Americans should do better in the future because this championship is now played with a bigger-sized golf ball. "All pros should play the big ball, even on long, tough and exposed courses lie this one," Player said. "The Americans do-and that's why they're so good." The big ball was used in the British Open for the first time, so Player made golfing history. The South African never looked tired, even on the first two days when the wind howled and he had to hit his shots into the teeth of the storm After his victory, which was worth 3,200, Player claimed he has discovered the secret of concentration. "1 was able to get into a kind of shell, a state of hypnosis, in which all other things are shut out of my mind," Player said.

American Hubert Green took fourth place with 288. Danny Edwards of Edmond, a rookie pro, finished at 292 and shared fifth place with Liang Huan Lu of Taiwan. American Tom Weiskopf, the defending champion, was tied for seventh with Bobby Cole of South Africa, each with 293. 0 1 0 0 0 2 4 7 9 2 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3 1 Newport AL team drops two games over weekend Newport Post dropped two weekend games-9-2 to Sher-Le- Mon last night at Smithfield and 4-2 to Howard Rogers Post Saturday at Smithfield-but it still is in the running for the southern Division title in the state Rhode Island American legion Baseball League. Newport (5-4-1) is trailing frontrunning Airport of Warwick (6-4) by half a game.

Newport will play Aubin Post, composed of Cranston West High players, tonight at Cranston Stadium. Newport scored two first inning runs on Steve Annarummo's single, a walk to Jay Andrade, two errors and three stolen bases. The home club scored three second inning runs and clinched the game with a five-run flare- up in the third. Pitcher Al Ervey's double was the only hit in the third. Two errors and four walks did the rest of the damage.

Newport scored a first inning run against Howard Rogers Post Saturday, but the home team surged back with a four- run rally that sewed up the game. Newport's first run, scored on singles by Mike Reagan, Steve Annarummo and Joe Westmoreland, was lost in the shuffle. Rogers Post clicked for five consecutive hits in the bottom of the first. Mike Buffi smashed a scoring double and Passano lash a three-run homer. Jay Santos, in relief, pitched two-hit no walk ball over six scoreless innings.

But Newport's attack failed. The second Newport run was scored in the fifth. Mark Powell walked, dash to third on Santos' single, and scored when an error was made on Reagan's infield grounder.
