TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Wednesday, February 1, 1989 Leonard, Hearns to battle Father Time SI: Clayton a coke user since 1983 MIAMI (AP) Mark Clayton of the Miami Dolphins has been a cocaine user since at least 1983 and the All-Pro wide receiver received the drug before a game this season, Sports Illustrated reported. This week's i issue quotes state prosecutor's documents in which a former limousine driver describes Clayton and suspended Dolphins wide receiver Mark Duper as "big users" of cocaine. The article reports that Ricky Arroyo, the driver, told the Dade County state attorney's office he shared cocaine with Clayton on "two or three occasions" and gave the player "four or five grams" of cocaine before a game this season. Arroyo, 29, arrested last March on charges of attempting to purchase more than $100,000 of cocaine, was a driver for Super Duper Limo, co-owned by Duper, who was suspended the NFL in December for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Clayton, 27, who played in Sunday's Pro Bowl in Honolulu, was unavailable for comment, Coach Continued from page D1 meet with Chargers owner Alex Spanos.

However, Spanos, who flew here Tuesday from Stockton, canceled the meeting because he was sick, and flew back home, according to Ortmayer. While the Chargers' job remains vacant, Ortmayer will be off in Indianapolis where he will view the four-day scouting combine. Ortmayer said he doesn't believe it will hurt the Chargers by not having a head coach present. Many of the Chargers' assistants are scheduled to attend the workouts. Ortmayer i is expected back in town Sunday night.

He most likely will sit down with Spanos either Sunday night or Monday and make the decision on the replacement for Al Saunders, fired Dec. 19. Chargers Continued from page D1 Ortmayer believes the new free agency plan has the NFL heading into "uncharted waters." "Everyone is going to have to make decisions on which veterans to keep, on your injured reserve players, on any major surgery guys," he said. "What we intended to do is study it (the unprotected players list) like we do the draft. We'll study it within the framework of improving our roster." Ortmayer did indicate that any of the players who had to undergo major surgery or had major injuries this season quarterback Mark Vlasic, tight end Rod Bernstein and offensive tackle John Clay among them would be among the protected players.

For a young team 1 like the Chargers, the new free agency plan may be a springboard to adding an unprotected veteran player or two who may add stability to the roster. But the new plan may also hurt the Chargers. With many young players that Ortmayer feels might develop down the road, the team faces the decision of which to keep and which to cut loose. "You have to look at what you have invested in youth, and what the long-term blueprint for your team is," Ortmayer said. "You also have to look at what's available in the draft." Ortmayer said it's too early to tell how many free agents the Chargers might sign, but did seem to indicate that the team may very well be active in the market.

NFL Continued from page D1 Dorsett, the 34-year-old running back traded by Dallas to Denver last year, and Anderson, the 32- year-old one-time All-Pro with the Cardinals who now is a backup with the Giants, are other possibilities. "You'll see Super Bowl players, Pro Bowl players, very big names," said Tex Schramm, president of the Cowboys and a member of the owners' Management Council. "But there will be reasons for them they'll be bad medical risks, they'll be older. A lot of them will be getting good salaries, own homes in the area, things like that. They won't want to move." Under the old plan, players offered a contract by another team could move only after their team waived its right of first refusal.

The new team would also have to compensate the old one with draft choices. Only two players in 10 years moved under that system, most re- cently, linebacker Wilber Marshall of Chicago. The Miami Herald reported in today's editions. But Clayton's agent, David Ware, called the SI article "entirely false." "Mark Clayton has never been charged with any crime, never been subpoenaed to testify about any crime," Ware told the Herald. "But through slanderous innuendo, Sports Illustrated: is trying to convince the public that Mark is An article in SI in Dec.

12 issue quoted several sources saying that Duper, 30, was a cocaine user and had ties to drug traffickers. Dade State Attorney Janet Reno would not comment on the article or the existence of any documents containing statements from Arroyo. Dolphins Coach Don Shula told the Herald that he is unaware of any drug use by Clayton. "As far as I know, Clayton has not tested positive on any of the drug screenings given by the National Football League," said Shula. Shula said Dolphins security officials will investigate the allegations about Clayton.

Arroyo's attorney, Herb Cohen, said his client gave the magazine the information about Clayton after being dissatisfied with the reaction from league officials. By George Puscas Ridder News Service DETROIT In an old ballroom in midtown Manhattan, Detroit's Thomas Hearns sat at a table Tuesday quietly watching dancers from the Broadway musical "Black and Blue" doing their thing. Commentary He watched films of World War I cannoneers, then World War II bombers, then films of HearnsLeonard I. By then, everyone in the crowd on the Roseland dance floor got the message. This was the flashy, noisy prelude to the formal announcement that Hearns, the celebrated Hit Man, would fight Sugar Ray Leonard again June 12.

It's official now. With cameras recording their strokes, Hearns and Leonard signed contracts committing themselves to the long-awaited rematch. "This isn't being sold as a fight," promoter Bob Arum said, "but as a great, great spectacle and production." Show biz strikes again. Hearns-Leonard II will be presented in the back yard stadium at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace and on pay-per-view and closed-circuit television. Tickets for the fight will be (CHIEF AUTO PARTS NHRA Thomas Sugar Ray Hearns Leonard priced from $100 to $800 each.

Don't tell Hearns, but in Las Vegas, Leonard is an early 4-to-1 favorite. The odds are a reflection of the fight crowd's belief that Hearns, who fought so gallantly Nov. 4 to save himself against San Diegan James Kinchen, nonetheless is finished as a major fighter. "I'll be very surprised and disappointed," Arum said, "if the fighters don't rack up $30 million for themselves from this one." There seems no end, no limit, to the amount of money fighters can earn, if the hype is right.
