Every player plays off the other. Jeff Fryer added 34 points for Loyola, 12-7, while Enoch Simmons had 25. Kimble scored 20 points, which impressed Westhead. Kimble was returning from arthroscopic knee surgery Dec.

29. Last season, he missed the first six games, then upon his return the Lions reeled off 25 straight victories before losing to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. We played a very consistent offensive game, Westhead said. I was pleased with getting the mixture of Bo Kimble. We wanted to give him some game minutes before league play.

Steve Smith had 32 points to lead USIU, 8-14. Demetrius Laf-fitte added 28 points. 3:52 remaining gave Loyola Marymount a 165-137 lead, breaking the previous record of 164. Loyola matched that record in a 164-138 season-opening victory against Azusa Pacific, an NAIA school, on Nov. 28.

Nevada-Las Vegas scored 164 points in 1976, against Hawaii-Hi-lo, also an NAIA school. The Lions broke their own NCAA record for most points in a half when they took a 94-76 lead at intermission. They set that record when Bo Kimble, who had not played since Dec. 23 in a loss to De-Paul, hit a jump shot as time expired. In the Jan.

7 game, Loyola led 93-68 at the half. The 170 points in the first 20 minutes set a record for points in one half. The Gulls broke their own NCAA mark for points by a losing team. Gathers, a 6-foot-7 junior center, increased his averages to 33.4 points and 14.6 rebounds as he sought to become the first player to lead the nation in scoring and The Associated Press Per Stumer of Loyola chases USIUs Eddie Hodges. Free agency takes new twist Big NFL names probably available coaches talk about defense, but thats what fuels these teams fast-break offenses.

I thought we played very hard defense, Westhead said. We made some nice steals and forced turnovers. Gulls Coach Gary Zarecky agreed. Their pressure really bothered us, Zarecky said. We thought we might have had an advantage because they were thinking about setting a record instead of winning.

But the difference is they had the intensity to go to the hoop and we didnt. Hank Gathers, who leads the nation in scoring and rebounding, had 41 points and a school-record 29 rebounds for Loyola Marymount. The game was an encore to the previous highest-scoring game, a 162-144 Loyola victory over USIU on Jan. 7 at San Diego, which set the previous record of 306 points. The Lions 181 points were the most ever by an NCAA team.

Marcellus Lees slam dunk with hurls their coach I i i i 5 i i i 1 T-A Sports Editor Its time for the Chargers to make move In case youve been suffering from the flu or have been on vacation for the last three weeks, as I have, heres an update on what you missed in the Chargers search for a new head coach. Nothing. Ron Lynn and a cast of many are still being bandied around as possible replacements for A1 Saunders, who was fired Dec. 19, one day after the end of the regular season. Meanwhile, Kansas City, Cleveland and San Francisco have all lost and replaced their former Coaches.

Whats taking so long? Are Steve Ortmayer and Alex Spanos waiting for a sign from God? Are they seeking a Senate confirmation? One thing is certain. The addition of Chicago assistant Johnny Roland to the interviewing process doesnt bode well for the other candidates. Ortmayer wouldnt still be looking if he had found somebody he liked. Or would he? Thats hard to figure, as are many of the moves by Ortmayer since his arrival in San Diego. A quick glance at the candidates helps explain the lack of haste in filling the position.

Ortmayer doesnt seem inclined to give the job to Lynn, Jerry Rhome or Wayne Sevier, the three current Chargers assistants being considered. Which leaves Redskins assistant Dan Henning, former Illinois and California Head Coach Mike White and Roland. None exactly inspires visions of Lombardi. Hennings 22-41 record as coach in Atlanta cant be a real big selling point to Spanos. And White, who spent his time at Illinois at war the Big Ten and resigned in the face of recruiting violations by one of his assistants, doesnt seem a good fit for a club that fired Saunders for overstepping his bounds.

As for Roland, who would become the first black head coach in the NFL, all signals appear good except for his lack of head coaching experience, something that Prtmayer and Spanos have placed a premium on throughout the search. Of course, while the Chargers meandering through their interview process, former Cleveland Head Coach Marty Schottenhei-mer was accepting the Kansas City job and respected San Francisco defensive coordinator George Seifert was replacing Bill Walsh as the 49ers head coach. Oh well, theres plenty more where they came from, The question is, why all this jumping through hoops when the Chargers assistants have qualifications equal to or better than those of the other candidates? Only Henning has the NFL head coaching experience that Ortmayer and Spanos want and 22-41 is hardly a strong recommendation. White and Roland have many strong points, but why grab somebody elses assistant coach when youve already got talented assistants who seem ready to assume a bead coaching job? One of the stumbling blocks with Schottenheimer, a proven NFL head coach, was the Char- gers insistence that he retain Please see Frank, page D2 Six offensive records tumble in wild one LOS ANGELES (AP) The Loyola Marymount Lions and U.S. International Gulls ran amok through the NCAA record book once again, bringing to a close perhaps one of the craziest home-and-home series ever seen in college basketball.

When the Lions and Gulls finished their 40 minutes of non-stop action Tuesday night, Loyola Marymount had won the highest-scoring game ever, 181-150 at home in Gersten Pavilion. Thats 331 points, and just one of six offensive records set. We were unconcerned about an NCAA record, Loyola Marymount Coach Paul Westhead said. We worked on our defense as well as offense and worked hard to put that together. It may sound strange to hear the ciation as its Athlete of the Year.

I think back to when I was born and, coming out of my mothers womb, my grandmother named me after Jacqueline Kennedy, hoping that someday I would be the first lady of something, Joyner-Kersee said in accepting the award. This award helps justify my grandmothers wish. Its a great honor, not only for myself, but for all women. But when the NFLs most drastic amendment of its free agent system takes effect today, those four and dozens of aging or injured marquee names like them are liable to find their market value drastically reduced. The new system will allow each of the NFLs 28 teams to protect just 37 of the average of 59 players on their roster, whether their contracts expire or not.

The rest more than 600 players will become unrestricted free agents, available to sign with whomever they can reach agreement. And, while no team officially has released the names of its unprotected players, the consensus among league and team officials is that many will be household names who share a common attribute age, injury problems, large contracts, or some combination of all three. The new system, unilaterally imposed by the owners without consent of the NFL players union, is an outgrowth of last years 24-day strike and the antitrust suit filed by the players union at its end. It is aimed at showing Judge David Doty, who is presiding over the suit, that the league can devise a fair system that will allow players movement between teams. But the union says it will free only the least desirable players.

Every player has to be free some time in his career, Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players Association said Tuesday. What youve got here is every player in the league older than 30 except a few quarterbacks, plus the 42nd, 43 rd, 44th and 45th player on every roster. Thats hardly free agency. In fact, Upshaws opinion seemed to be confirmed by the as-yet sketchy reports of players on the list. The Washington Redskins, for example, reportedly have left unprotected the 38-year-old Butz, a starting defensive tackle for 16 Chargers may pursue free agents By Kevin Scattareggia Times Advocate Sportswriter SAN DIEGO With the National Football League about to enter into a new era of free agency, the Chargers face some tough decisions.

Under the terms of the new free agency plan, the Chargers had to submit a list of 37 protected players by this afternoons deadline. The remaining players under contract 25 in the Chargers case will become free agents who may sign with any other NFL team without the Chargers receiving compensation. Which players will be left unprotected? Its purely speculation at this point. Those Chargers not on the 37-man list will not be known until Thursday when the. league office releases the names.

What is known is that players such as linebacker Chip Banks (on the reserve-did not report list) and running back Napolean McCallum, who is still in the U.S. Navy, are not counted against the protected players list, according to Steve Ortmayer, the Chargers director of football operations. The Chargers still retain the rights to both players, he said. Please see Chargers, page D5 years, and Neal Olkewicz, their 31-year-old middle linebacker. The New York Giants reportedly have left unprotected Jim Burt, an eight-year veteran nose tackle who has been troubled throughout his career by back problems, and starting guard Billy Ard, another eight-year veteran who is being challenged by several younger players.

Despite countless interviews, Ortmayer continues to maintain that there is still no clear favorite in the field of seven candidates'. Popular belief, however, is that four candidates are in serious con- tention, including Washington as- sistant Dan Henning, former Cal and Illinois Coach Mike White, Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Lynn and Roland. In soccer, however, its not exactly the best way. That is the dilemma facing the San Marcos High School girls soccer team as it continues its quest for a CIF playoff berth.

The Knights continue to play what can be termed straight-ahead soccer. It is a habit San Marcos Coach John Perdue is trying to break because, in this case, going straight ahead could detour the Knights playoff chances. That was the word Tuesday from Steve Ortmayer, the teams director of football operations.

Ortmayer, who met twice on Tuesday with Chicago Bears assistant Johnny Roland, said a decision is not likely before the weekend, and probably not until Monday. The delay, however, has cost the Chargers at least one assistant coach. Dave Levy, who has spent the past nine seasons with San Diego, has been hired as the Detroit Lions running backs coach. Levy, 56, was the Chargers tight ends coach last season. Before that he was the teams offensive coordinator.

Ortmayer leaves Thursday for many of the things she values. She continues to compete for U.S. fans, as she will do once again at Madison Square Garden on Friday night in the Millrose Games, rather than follow the course of better money by competing abroad.
