TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Saturday, October 1,1988 B7 Alomar, Martinez lead Padres win Winslow Continued from page B1 that Kellen isnt playing for us in 1988. He obviously has left large shoes to fill. Coach A1 Saunders, always a big Winslow supporter, said: Kellen Winslow has been a great player for this organization. It was a real honor for me to have been able to coach him as a position coach during some of the years when he was the greatest tight end in the Na- -tional Football League. It was a special opportunity to be involved last year when he made, in my estimation, one of the greatest comebacks in professional sports.

Winslow suffered a major knee injury in 1984 and underwent reconstructive surgery that kept him out of action nearly one year. He had finally made it all the way back last season when he was voted to his fifth Pro Bowl in nine seasons. Winslow, who caught 53 passes for 519 yards and three touchdowns think this has hurt my While Ortmayer wouldnt respond to any criticisms leveled by Winslow, he said the club had no other choice. Im aware that Kellen has been disturbed by the fact that he was listed as suspended, he said. I think thats unfortunate, but everybody has to be someplace.

The NFL requires that everybody be somewhere. I dont necessarily believe that the term suspended connotes or denotes anything other than the fact that the NFL requires everybody to be somewhere. Saunders made it official Friday: Billy Ray Smith will start at outside linebacker Sunday against Denver. Saunders said Smith will start in place of David Brandon, except Brandon hasnt started in two weeks as the Chargers have played with only three linebackers. Look instead for Smith to replace Gary Plummer.

last season, finished his career with 541 receptions 14th on the all-time list for 6,741 yards and 45 touchdowns. Although he led the NFL in receiving twice, Winslow will probably be remembered most for two things: refining the position of tight end with his speed and flair for catching the ball, and for his memorable performance in a 41-38 playoff win over Miami in 1981 when he caught 13 passes for 166 yards and blocked the potential game-winning field goal to send the game into overtime. The ending to Winslows career was handled awkwardly by the Chargers. According to Winslow, the team stripped him of his dignity by placing him on the suspended list. I would hope people would know my situation well enough to realize that I was suspended even though I did nothing wrong, said Winslow.

Unfortunately, some people will see that Im on the list and assume it was for drugs. I HOUSTON (AP) San Diegos Roberto Alomar and Carmelo Martinez provided a one-two punch too tough for the Houston Astros to handle Friday night. Alomar got four straight hits and scored three runs and Martinez drove in three runs, leading the Padres to a 5-1 victory. I feel good at the plate, Martinez said. I do my best when I get a chance to play.

Its nice to know when you go 0-for-4 one day, youll still be in the lineup the next day. Alomar drove in two runs with a third-dnning single and singled home another run in the fifth. He also singled in the ninth. I felt real good the second half this season, not swinging at bad pitches, Alomar said. Im taking more pitches and seeing the ball better.

Padres Manager Jack McKeon said the season was ending too soon. Weve got one goal and that was to finish .500, he said. I wish the season wasnt ending now. The Padres are now 81-78 with two games remaining. They still have a chance of passing the Astros and San Francisco Giants in the race for third place.

Houston starter Dave Meads, 3-1, was pelted by Alomar and Martinez in the early innings. Martinez singled home two runs in the third inning, then singled home another run in a two-run fifth. Martinezs single in the third gave him his 12th game-winning run batted in this season and his 34th RBI in his last 36 games. Alomar singled and Dickie Thon walked to open the third. After Randy Ready grounded out to move the runhers to second and third, Martinez drove a single to centerfield to score both runners.

In the fifth, Alomar and Thon each singled and Ready drove in Alomar with a base hit. Martinez then singled off relief pitcher Danny Darwin, scoring Thon. Alomar got his fourth hit in the seventh inning, took second on pitcher Joaquin Andujars throw-' ing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ready. Houston got a run in the second when Glenn Davis led off with a double off Ed Whitson and scored on a single by Alan Ashby. Whitson left the game after the second inning when he twisted his right ankle covering first base on a double play.

Greg Harris, 2-0, pitched the last seven innings, giving up five hits. The Astros continued their weak hitting attack that has plagued them all season. I just have to keep saying the same thing over and over, one run isnt going to win many games, Astros Manager Hal Lanier said.
