Griffith Joyner, the 100-meter and 200-meter gold medalist, was then denied what would have been a record-tying fourth Olympic gold as the U.S. womens 1,600 relay team finished second to the Soviet Union, which set a world record of 3 minutes, 15.18 seconds. Meanwhile, the U.S.

The United States, with Griffith Joyner running the anchor leg of the 1 ,600 relay, got the silver with a time of 3:15.51, also below the previous world record. East Germany won the bronze in 3:18.29. The previous world record of 3:15.92 was set by East Germany in 1984.

The U.S. womens 400-meter squad had trouble passing thg stick, but Ashford rescued them with a blazing anchor leg. She got the baton from Griffith Joyner about three meters back in third place, then raced past East German Marlies Gohr and into the lead with about 10 meters remaining. The winning time was 41.98, Please see Track, page B4 American boxers capture two golds By Angelo Cataldi Knight-Ridder News Service SEOUL, South Korea The Olympic boxing competition is ending exactly the way it began' two weeks ago with outrage and. controversy.

On the first day of the finals today, the U.S. team lost a gold med- al in a disputed judges ruling, nearly lost a second gold medal for the same reason, and then settled -the argument over judging with a thunderous knockout in the final bout of the day. Amid the chaos, Ray Mercer and Kennedy McKinney received gold medals for the U.S. team, while Michael Carbajal had to settle for the silver. Mercer, a 27-year-old Army man from Jacksonville, who didnt lace up his first pair of gloves until 1983, knew that a gold medal would provide his only chance to make it in the pros.

Now he has that chance. He made it possible by knocking out South Korean hero Baik Hyun Man with 44 seconds remaining in the first round. During a savage slugfest, Mercer battered Baik with a succession of rights, and then he ended the heavyweight battle with a right-left combination that sent Baik careening into his corner and down to the canvas. The crowd, which had greeted Baik with a thunderous ovation upon his arrival, looked on in silence as the South Korean managed to get back to his feet by the eight count, but he could not continue. Earlier in the morning, McKinney, a 22-year-old truck driver from Kileen, Texas, was able to score a 5-0 decision over Alexandar Hristov of Bulgaria and to win the Please see Boxing, page B4 Bob Gaines T-A Sportswriter Well have to excuse Joaquim.

First there was UCLA (3-56), then Stanford (10-31). And now, tonight at 7, Oregon invades San Diego Stadium. After a 7-3 victory over Stanford last week, the undefeated Ducks are ranked No. 20 in the nation. The Aztecs would be better off playing Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Evelyn Ashford takes a handoff Ray Mercer of the United States Winslows retirement official after agreement By Kevin Scattareggia Times-Advocate Sportswriter SAN DIEGO Finally, positively, and once and for all, Kel-len Winslows National Football League career is over. The Chargers All-Pro tight end made it official Friday, announcing that an agreement had been reached with the team on the final year of his contract after more than four weeks of negotiations.

The Chargers and I have come to an agreement regarding the final year of my contract, he said. However, due to the wording in the agreement, at the Chargers insistence, rather than mine, I am unable to reveal the terms of the settlement. The Chargers and Winslow have been discussing the situation since shortly after he was suspended for refusal to play for the club. After the teams final exhibition game on Aug. 26 against the Los Angeles Rams, Winslow informed the Chargers he was unable to play because of his bothersome knee, which had undergone arthroscopic surgery in June.

Track (mens marathon) (All events on Channel 39) So in a normal season for both teams, this would figure to be a high-scoring, competitive game. But nothing has been predictable this year, especially for the Ducks. Oregon, a team that is 22-22 over the last four years, is off to its fastest start since 1984, having beaten conference foes Washington State and Stanford on its way to a 3-0 record. So far this season, the Pac-10 looks like the best football conference in the nation and Oregon is part of that reputation, said San Diego State Coach Denny Stolz. The offense they played against Washington State was the best Ive seen them play in two years.

Oregon got off to an exolosive start with a 49-0 win over Long Beach State and followed that with a 43-28 victory over Washington State. Junior tailback Derek Loville has been the spark in the Ducks offense, rushing for 381 yards on 80 carries to rank second in the Pac-10. The 5-10, 191-pounder needs just 24 yards to become his schools ninth all-time leading rusher. The other key to Oregons success has been sophomore quarterback Bill Musgrave, who is the No. 5 passer in his conference.

But Musgrave will not play against San Diego State. He suffered ligament damage to his ankle on the next-to-last play of last weeks 7-3 win over Stanford. Musgrave will be replaced by junior Pete Nelson, who is coming off a back injury last season that Please see Aztecs, page B5 at the assessment, citing that Winslow had passed the team physical a few weeks earlier. With Winslow saying he was physically incapable of playing and the team insisting that he was fine, an impasse developed. The Chargers attempted to end the standoff by offering Winslow 50 percent of his $795,000 guaranteed salary for this season, according to Winslow.

When he declined, saying he was entitled to the entire amount, the Chargers placed Winslow on the suspended list. The two sides have been negotiating ever since, and had seemed near an agreement on a number of occasions. Im glad its finally over, said Winslow. But it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. You have to approach this as a business.

You cant take everything personally or else youll never last. Im not bitter, but I had hoped it wouldnt end this way. Said Steve Ortmayer, director of football operations: Weve reached a settlement with Kellen relative to his 1988 contract Situation. Subsequently he has been reclassified to our clubs reserve retired list. Just as we will on the retirement of any other great player, Id just like to say that the San Diego Chargers, the National Football League and the game of football are far better for Kellen Winslow having played the game.

Were very disappointed Please see Winslow, page B7 Aztecs face another Pacific-10 challenge By Tod Leonard Times-Advocate Sportswriter SAN DIEGO Its wounds healed and its psyche said to be back intact after last weeks bye, the San Diego State football team will try to overcome yet another physical and mental obstacle tonight at San Diego Stadium. The Aztecs, who have one win and two lopsided losses on their ledger, play their final non-conference tune-up at 7 p.m. against Oregon, a former Pac-10 patsy now ranked 20th in the nation. In the last three years, the Aztecs have gone winless against the Pac-10, but the Ducks have been the team with which they have been most competitive. Last year, San Diego State led 20-19 in the fourth quarter, only to see Oregon drive 96 yards to score the winning touchdown with 1:41 remaining in the contest.

The Aztecs still had a chance to come back, but quarterback Todd Santos was flagged for intentionally fumbling the ball out of bounds deep in Oregon territory. The resulting penalty and loss of down ended the Aztecs hopes. The Ducks also won the first meeting between the teams here in 1985, but it was a 49-37 shootout. Wacky Joaquim said both Big Als wife and his sister must be doing something that isn't normal to gain all these muscles. And that Flo Jo looks more like a man than a woman and Jackie looks like a gorilla." When Joaquim did cross paths with Big Al, he tearfully apologized and said he was misquoted.
