TIMES-ADVOCATE, ESCONDIDO, SEPT. 10, 1979 D-3 Facts Figures NL EAST WEST The Latest Line Falcons not likely to duplicate that scoring spree at New Orleans in game against the Eagles; both dubs appear to be a notch or so below their stature of last year and would take points with the Falcons for a potentially close decision either way. Favorites won 15, lost 12 while home teams were 12-17 and home underdogs 24 vs. the spreads in Saturday's collegiate football action. As usual, the Gates of Mercy were closed tight at Ann Arbor where Michigan ran up its annual rout of hapless Northwestern.

Biggest surprises were upeets by Oregon, Brigham Young, Memphis State and Caklifornia of heavily favored Colorado, Texas AAM, Mississippi State and Arixona State, respectively, and the esse with which North Carolina, Rutger and Tulane dumped South Carolina, Holy Cross and Stanford, respectively. Last week against Seattle, the Charger runners accounted for 151 yards. Sunday, they piled up 140. Mike Thomas, who came over from the Washington Redskins, was the leader with 49 yards on seven carries. Fullback Clarence Williams had 44 on 16 carries, Artie Ownes had 18 on three, Bo Matthews nine on three and Lydell Mitchell returned to action with 20 yards on six tries. This game reminded me of the WashingtonDallas games I used to play Thomas said.

It was a real big game. Oakland is a tough physical team. For Mitchell, the game was big because it marked his first regular season action since he contracted a staph infection on his knee. Continued from D-l drive, but turned the ball over when Fouts fumbled the center snap. Raider quarterback, Ken Stabler, was sacked for a loss back to the 13 before he threw the interception.

The only San Diego touchdown of the second half came at the start of the fourth quarter when Fouts found Winslow with a five yard slant-in, ending a 36-yard drive in seven plays. Ill never forget this game, Winslow said. Im glad I had a chance to play a part in a rivalry like the Oak-land-San Diego one. My TD pass was a simple slant-in and Dan got the ball to me in a hilrry. Ill tell you something Sundays are getting to be fun around here.

HR-Garvey Chargers-Raiders Quotebook 1 4 HBP By Bair (Russell). WP-Sutcliffe. PB Bench. Angel Box Quotes around the lockerrooms Sunday following the San Diego Chargers 30-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders: Raiders managing general partner A1 Davis on his teams defeat: I really dont have anything to say at all. They (San Diego) deserved to win, we just didnt have anything go our way.

They have a good solid team, were younger. We really missed (defensive end John) Ma-tuszak (arm injury). We just werent forceful enough. We didnt do a job, but you have to give them credit. Safety Jack Tatum on the Chargers offense: Talented.

Theyve got backs sitting on the bench that were starting last year. Theyve got a great group of wide receivers, too. J.J. (John Jefferson) takes the pressure of (Charlie) Joiner and that (Kellen) Winslow is a helluva tight end. On the booing he got every time his name was mentioned: Its good to know the fans knew I was there, but you cant let the crowd affect you.

The crowd doesnt play a down. Oakland linebacker Phil Villapiano: If you ask me theyve got a helluva ballclub. Theyre going to give a lot of people fits. Their coaches (Jim Hanifan in particular) called a helluva a game. We never got a feel for what was going on.

As soon as we did, they mixed it up on us. And thats the name of the game offensively. We never did know what was going on until the last two mintues. NBC commentator John Brodie on the Chargers winning edge: Last year, (quarterback Dan) Fouts had to have a great game for San Diego to win. Today, he was a bit better than average percentage wise (15 of 30), but the team is good enough now where they can blow a team like Oakland off the field.

Im going to like coming back to San Diego. Lydell Mitchell, Chargers running back who came into the game with 7:45 remaining and rushed for 20 yards on six carries: I feel good. I was surprised I went in because I wasnt loose. I had to fumble on the sideline for my helmet. I just want to contribute.

The knee feels good. Im just looking forward to getting some work. Guard Ed White, whose job it was to block the Raiders Dave Pear, on how the victory felt: Long and hard. It was a tough, long game. But we worked hard and we got what we wanted.

Its nice to know were going to be the rabbits for a while. Let the rest of them chase us. Raiders Dave Pear, whose job it was to stop Whites blocks: I dont want to talk about it. Ive got nothing to say Charger team physician Dr. Jay Buzz Malkoff on the extent of the injury to San Diego placekicker Rolf Benirschke: Its either a fracture or separation of the chondral cartilage (ribs).

Its going to be a few weeks. How soon he kicks again depends on how comfortable he is. We wont know anything for about four or five days. Safety Mike Fuller, on team attitude: We have a quiet confidence on defense now. The thing I like and thats different from last year is that we make things happen on the field now.

Thats as much an intimadator as anything else. Second-year tight end Greg McGrary on his block of a Ray Guy punt: I had a dream about that. I lined up on the right wing and they called out Keith Kings number. Nobody called mine, so I thought I might have a free shot at it. Nobody had blocked a Ray Guy punt in a while.

I got it right in my hand. Chargers team owner Gene Klein on the state of the franchise: Right now were two for two and I love it.
