TIMES-ADVOCATE MONDAY, SEPT. 10, 1979 D-1 Chargers put it all together to beat up Raiders Home club comes roaring out early and runs up 30 points on Raiders San Diegos Killer handcuffs a battered Snake and Oakland By JOHN MAFFEI T-A Sports Editor SAN DIEGO There were 50,255 fans jammed into San Diego Stadium on Sunday. Most had on yellow shirts or were waving towels proclaiming Charger Power. Graciously the team obliged. An extremely motivated Charger club roared out of the lockerrom to score twice in the first quarter and ended up burying their fierces rivals the normall stingy Oakland Raiders 30-10.

Scoring 30 points against the Raiders is quite a feat. In the last seven years, covering 113 games, Oakland defenses have surrendered 30 points I or more just seven times. Since 1965, the Oakland franchise became a winner, the Raiders have given up 30 or more points just 17 1 times in 218 games. -1 The last time the Chargers scored .30 points against Oakland was in 1971 when San Diego scored 33, but lost by one. In the 15 games that followed, the threw five shutouts against Chargers.

Im just glad the game didnt start minutes late, said rookie tight end Kellen Winslow, who caught four passes for 27 yards and a TD. Coach (Don) Coryell went beyond his usual get fired up pep talk before the game. We had to get out on the field because he had us ready to tear up the lockeroom. And were the Chargers ever ready -Jo play! I On their first possession, San Diego 65 yards on eight plays and scored when quarterback Dan Fouts fired a screen pass to wide receiver John Jefferson that J. J.

speared on a great reception and then sprinted in -Jor six points from 24 yards out. Thats a routine catch for J.J., I Fouts said after the game. For someone else it would have been but not for Jefferson. That play just got us going. Ive seen us handle Oakland like Ihis.

This was a very emotional game. pJYe can never repay the Raiders for ijast year (when Oakland won, 21-20, the now famous Holy Roller play), but were going to keep trying. We are a very confident team now. Weve been through the hard times and now there are good times ahead. I feel like we can attack any team with our passing game.

We have a good offensive line and great receivers and our coaches find ways to get the ball to the receivers. Everyone of the receivers on this club can catch the ball and go. One of the guys who can catch it, but doesnt really fit into the go category is tight end Bob Klein. On San Diegos third possession, Fouts looped a 54 yard pass to Klein for a TD to culminate a 61-yard, three-play drive. On the play, Fouts went back to pass, looked for a receiver, pumped once and then lofted a ball to a wide open Klein who out-ran the Oakland secondary to the endzone.

Klein isnt always the primary receiver on that play, but he was in this case. A lot depends on the coverage, an exhausted Coryell told reporters after the game. We caught Oakland in man-to-man coverage. They were doubling up on the outside guys and Fouts picked it up well. Actually it was the old stop and go pattern.

Thats why Dan had the one pump fake. Klein was pleased with his catch the longest of his 11-year career. Most of the time I dont go deep, Klein said. I usually get blasted over the middle. This was a play-action pass and I just slipped behind the defense.

We sucked Jack Tatum (Oakland defensive back) in and when I looked around no one was near me. They had the wrong defense for the pattern. I wanted to get to the endzone badly. I usually carry a piano on my back and I didn't want anyone to catch me from behind. The third Charger touchdown of the first half came on a sensational 32-yard return of an intercepted pass by linebacker Woodrow Lowe.

San Diego had Oakland deep in its own territory following a 56-yard Please see D-3, Col. 4 fight, said Raider tight end Raymond Chester, now a starter ahead of Casper who reported late to training camp. Ive lost a lot of street fights in my days, and well survive this one. Frankly, they just out-executed us. Lowes touchdown turned a 14-3 Charger lead into a 21-3 advantage, which was what the scoreboard read after the last tick on the clock in the first half.

But, with five seconds remaining before intermission, Stabler launched a pass into the end zone to a wide open Mark van Eeghen. He dropped it, however. Stabler scrambled out of the pocket on the next play but missed paydirt as the half ran out away. I should have caught that damn thing, lamented van Eeghen, sitting with his head in his hands. It would have been a little better for us, getting some momentum going, understated Stabler, softly.

They shut our offense down in every phase of the game out there. That front four is the strength of their defense. It makes the other parts of their defense that much better. Even without Louie (Kelcher), who is an All-Pro player, they were great. Its hard to imagine that unit playing any better with him in there.

TheyD probably be heU when he gets back. Kelcher is sidelined until at least November with a knee injury suffered in practice. We knew aU about their pass rush, noted Oakland coach Tom Flores. We couldnt keep them off balance, though. We played right into their hands when they got ahead.

Despite being handled most of the way, Oakland made a strong run at San Diego with a 22-yard touchdown We knew all about their pass rush, Flores pass from Stabler to Rich Martini in the third period. But reserve Charger tight end Gregg McCrary stormed in and blocked a Ray Guy punt out of the endzone for a safety, the first block and safety by the Chargers since 72, hiking the score to 23-10. No, we didnt have a block on, admitted San Diego special team coach Wayne Sevier. We had a middle return on with an eight-man line. Gregg had a great individual effort.

He just beat his man. Man-to-man, thats what the Chargers did to the Raiders. What was their total offense? asked Big Hands Johnson, who recorded five tackles and two blocked passes against Stabler. Yeah, they got 283 yards? Thats about right. We shoot for 285.

This was just another game for us. We have to beat them twice this year to gain our end, the playoffs. Weve played awesome footbaU on defense the first two weeks because thats the Please see D-5, Col. 4 Staff Photo by Bill Romero McEnroe claim Open crowns By TERRY MONAHAN T-A Sports Writer SAN DIEGO Beware, the Killer has arrived. Thats what free safety Pete Shaw called his squad, the defensive unit of the San Diego Chargers, after a 30-10 pounding of the Oakland Raiders on Sunday in San Diego Stadium.

A crowd of 50,255 was whipped into a wild frenzy before the opening kickoff just remembering what the Raiders pulled off Sept. 10, 1978 when The Holy Roller touchdown wiped out a Charger triumph. And the defense, recalling that bewildering play, more than avenged the Ken Stabler-to-Pete Banaszak-to-Dave Casper touchdown trio. So much so, in fact, that the Raiders suffered their second worst defeat in the 20-year history against San Diego. The only time the Chargers beat Oakland by more was a 41-10 thrashing in 1961.

That was a long tune coming, Tou just can run around without a block, Lowe said linebacker Woodrow Lowe. This past year was the longest one whenever Id think about Oakland. If we learned one thing it was you can never relax against those Alabama boys. Lowe, Crismon Tide Class of 75, made a pre-game taping talk with acrobatic wide receiver John Jefferson a reality when the linebacker intercepted a pass from Stabler, Alabama Class of 68, and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. I had one about 60 yards at Alabama, but I didnt score that time, Lowe said, smiling broadly in front of his locker, crowded with reporters.

I just saw a lot of white jerseys. I came back to the left and gave everyone a chance to throw a block. You cant just run around out there without a block or youll get killed. The last five yards I was falling forward. I kept remembering that I had told JJ that Id get the Snake this time.

It seemed as if the entire defensive unit got to Stabler, who was rushed, hurried, sacked and thoroughly thwarted. Somebody hit my arm on that one, said Stabler of Lowes interception. What a lousy pass, it went straight up in the air. For the afternoon, Stabler was 17 of 34 for 183 yards passing with two interceptions. Linebacker Ray Preston dropped two potential interceptions.

But each time the ball was snapped, Stabler drew a large white-clad crowd of Chargers namely, Wilbur Young, Fred Dean, Gary Johnson and Leroy Jones. The welts and scars on Stablers back and hips revealed the intensity of the rush by the front four, The Border Patrol. Man, that was a good old street It all fits, sweep by ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves have been battling to get out of last place in the National League West most of the season, and the San Diego Padres are a big reason the Braves are still the ceUar. Fifth place San Diego has beaten Atlanta 12 out of 16 tunes the two teams have played this year, including a 4-1 victory Sunday. The latest victory capped a three-game sweep of the Braves by the Padres.

Every team has its team. Agamst the Braves, everything faUs into place for us, said San Diego Manager Roger Craig. We usually get good pitching when we play them. Braves Manager Bobby Cox agreed. Its the same old story no success at all against San Diego, he said.

Theyre not a great team, but they sure hit and steal a lot against us. We try real hard to beat them and get out of the cellar, but we just dont have much success, he said. Gene Tenaces 17th home run of the season, a two-run blast that brought home Jerry Turner in the first inning, staked Randy Jones to an early lead and sent Atlanta knuckleball pitcher PhD Niekro, 17-19, to his third consecutive defeat. Tenace then took time to give his manager, Roger Craig, a vote of confidence. Ive had my differences with Roger, said the 32-year-old power hitter, but I think hes done a good job with what hes had to work with.

San Diego iced the game with another run in the second when Turner singled, stole second and scored on two throwmg errors by the Braves. In the eighth inning, pinch-hitter Charlie Spikes singled home Pepe Frias with the only Atlanta run. But in the top of the ninth Turner scored his third run of the game for the Padres. Jones, 11-11, got the victory with relief help from Steve Mura. Jones, who is nearing a new five-year agreement with the Padres, allowed but six hits and struck out five, before yielding to Mura in the eighth inning. Mura then picked up his save.

To compensate or not compensate? Ill be more excited about his camp as soon as this damn compensation thing is settled, said the veteran coach. I hate to keep bringing this thing up, but we just dont know whats going to happen.

When thats over, I know what I have, Ill know what I need. This morning, lawyers from both the San Diego and Portland franchises met in NBA commissioner Larry OBriens New York office. There, they presented final arguments over who gets what for Bill Walton the 6-11 center signed four months ago come Wednesday. Meanwhile, back at the University of San Diego, 23 rookies and free agents reported to camp this morning. Shue said he will invite 10 back when veterans report on Friday.
