Flip has been a guest on all their shows, plus just about every other talk and comedy show on the tube. Here are his summations about television's terrific talkers. NEW YORK (NEA) I'll say what I have to say about those I know least to start. If you're not confused, I'm referring to the men who run the late-night talk If I recall correctly, I was on Merv Griffin's old show twice.

I was not familiar with Merv then as a TV eprsonality, so there wasn't any real rapport between him and me. Since I was young in TV exposure at the time, a "trying" comic on for the first time. I didn't get too much attention. The host pays attention ot his No. 1 guest.

You do your thing and understand. I did my wasn't a panel 1 had complete freedom of choice in my material, which I consider a mark of respect. I can't say that I saw Merv paying any attention to any particular person, but the host of a show always depends on one or two guesls to carry the interest. That's why they are there. That's how well I know Merv.

I don't know Merv Griffin as well as I know Johnny Carson or Joey Bishop, whom don't know much better than I know Merv. A couple of years ago, I was asked to do a with Dick Cavett. I had not known of him before this time. Then 1 heard comments about how bright and witty he is. I was excited about meeting him.

He made absolutely no notes before we went on the air, which is the way I like a conversation. We immediately jelled. It was a very exciting experience and I enjoyed Dick Cavett, Next, do I talk about Johnny cr Joey? I'lltak them in that order, That solves the problem. My relationship with the Tonight show has always been a very personal thing. When I first went there for an audition, the talent co-ordinator was Bruce Cooper.

His altitude, his interests and his sense of humor, I feel, were things that made him understand what 1 was trying to do and what I was trying to do, I know, was different. I must say, I hold the record for having been bumped from the show's guest list and I'm also the highest-paid guest ever I was bumped five nights in a row. When I finally got on, they paid me for all the non-appearances as well as the appearance got for my performance. After my first appearance on Tonight on Aug. 18, 1965, and then about six more appearances, 1 was recognized by the public.

They sensed a very deej relationship between Johnny me. They figured we were practically sleeping together by this time, which Was fine, because the affection they felt for Johnny they wer.e showering on me also. Only I hadn't met lim yet. I would do my spot, walk off and leave. Once, around my seventh appearance, Johnny caught me before the show.

He said, "How you're always running? Ve been looking forward to meeting you." We established good vibes. Now I think I should bring Joey Bishop into the picture. suppose from my exposure on Tonight I was invited to be on Joey's show. Joey sent for me jefore the show. We had drinks.

We did the show. Then he asked me to his house'for dinner, and we Ayatfihed the show on the air. He was also the first one .0 invite 'me to be guest host, t'also 'have to say that I found Joey to be extremely sensitive about material. He wolud never tell me I cojildn't. do a piece, but he would tell me that he personally did care for something.

I would make the changes, based on the respect 75hat I feel should be shown to a host. I know in one piece I said I had always wanted to be a singer until I went to night rlubs and noticed that they always spit as sing, and they 'sprayed the front tables, lie was op tight abodt the word I changed it.
