JHE SELMA TTMESOOURNAL MONDAY, JUNE 3, IMS Montgomery station loses CBS affiliation MONTGOMERY (AP) -tg ornery's oldest television station, WCOV, will lose its CBS network affiliation in March 1986, station officials said. WCOV General Manager Carl Richards said Friday the CBS-initiated action contradicted the network's earlier claims that the Montgomery station would remain an affiliate for the foreseeable future. Its a direct reversal of their testimony during the FCC hearing that dealt with the Selma-Montg ornery conflict," Richards said. They said they had no plans to change affiliations from our station to WAKA. Selma's AKA-TV recently opened its tall broadcasting tower 28 miles outside of Montgomery and has entered the market, ranked No.

120 in the country, with its own CBS signal. Because of its stronger VHF signal. WAKA is able to reach a larger broadcasting market than WCOVs weaker UHF signal. Richards said the network cited business reasons for pulling the affiliation from WCOV. They give as their reason that it was a business decision, Richards said, and thats all I can say about their motivation right now.

WCOVs current owner, Gay-Bell Stations of Lexington, announced plans last month to sell the station to David Woods of West Monroe, La. Richards said Woods, the owner of KARD-TV in West Monroe, was aware of CBSs plans to withdraw the affiliation before he made the offer to buy WCOV. But Richards said he wasnt whether WCOV would become an independent station. Its difficult to make any firm statements because of the jockeying of aU the stations, he said. Currently, three of the four area stations are for sale.

Bahakel Communications, the owner of WKAB announced in April that it had filed for permission from the Federal Communications Com; mission to sell the station to a. Maryland-based communications company. The Charlotte, N.C.-based Bahakel" was forced to sell WKAB because' FCC regulations prohibit the ownership of two television stations in the. same market. Bahakel has lined the purchase of WAKA, a move will take place when the FCC approves the WKAB sale.

Bahakel owns seven television sta- tions, five of them ABC affiliates, and industry speculation has been that Bahakel will switch WAKA from CBS to abc. HI But the agreement between Bahakel and Terrapin tions, the company that has applied tg buy WKAB, forces Bahakel to commit; to maintaining a CBS affiliation WAKA for at least two years after thg -sale. Only WSFA, Montgomerys NBC affiliate, is removed from much of the swirling business deals, CharlesR Whitehurst, WSFAs general manag er, said Friday. I think the whole market is weird right now, Whitehurst said.
