C-4 T1MES-ADV0CATE. ESCONDIDO, CA FRIDAY, OCT 2, 1981 This eporf Seattle Sea hawks vs. San Diego Chargers Weekend's NFlSeoytin him, but this could be one of his longer afternoons. Last-minute factors Kenny Easley, Seattles brilliant rookie safety, injured an ankle against Kansas City, but is expected to be OK. Coach Jack Paters said that Easley is getting better every day.

Thrift, the newcomer who had been starting at middle linebacker for San Diego, probably will miss the game with a hyper-extended elbow. If Thrift cant play, hell be replaced by veteran Bob Horn. Horn isnt as mobile as Thrift and isnt as good on pass coverage. Dean is not back with the Chargers by Sunday, San Diego will probably start rookie Keith Ferguson a fifth-round draft pick our of Ohio State. The other possible starter at defensive right end is John Woodcock, the former Detroit Lion, who hasnt played in more than a year.

Mel Gray, who attended the University of Missouri, was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971.

2 D. Against Buffalo on Nov. 1, 1964, Houstons George Blanda completed 37 passes. 3 C. On Dec.

11, 1977, against Seattle, Kansas City safety Gary Barbaro returned an interception 102 yards. 4 A. In 1978, Atlanta punter John James booted the ball 109 times to establish the NFL mark. 5 C. In 1945, Washington quarterback Sammy Baugh attempted 182 passes and completed 128, for a completion percentage of 70.33.

Okay, lets have a quirk football quiz. The team in question has just given up 42 points in its most recent game. It has allowed 110 points in its four 1981 appearances. Its defensive record is among the worst in football at the moment, with the opposition gaining more than 400 yards per game. So which team is it? The 3-1 San Diego Chargers? Or the 1-3 Seattle Seahawks? If you guessed Seahawks, youre wrong.

Fact is, the flashy, high-scoring, pass-crazy Chargers have turned almost every 1981 game into a football version of run-and-gun. They put it up, and so does the opposition. And may the better scoring machine win. Last week, the better machine was Denvers, with Craig Morton destroying San Diegos young secondary, completing 17 of 18 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns. Not that San Diego didnt do some damage of its own.

After being down a demoralizing 35-0 at one point, the Chargers and Dan Fouts rallied for 24 unanswered points, which wasnt bad, considering they lost Chuck Muncie, their leading rusher, and James Brooks, his No. 1 backup with injuries. Seattle? Well, this young Seahawk team is still trying to find the winning knack. It moves the ball, it scores, it sometimes even plays good defense. But something has been lacking, some confidence factor perhaps.

Whatever it is, its always been evident when Seattle has played San Diego, a team that holds a 7-0 record over it. Thats right, the Seahawks have never beaten the Chargers in a regular season game. When the Seahawks have the ball Jim Zorn is not the Chargers favorite quarterback to defense. He is probably not any teams favorite. Defensive linemen always know they are in for a long exhausting day against a passer San Diego refers to as the rabbit.

The Seahawks like to run a Kickoff locally is Sunday at 1 p.m. on Channel 39 lot of play-action motion involving their best runner, Sherman Smith, with Zorn passing off a number of fakes to Steve Largent, Sam McCullum and now the new rookie in the Seattle backfield, David Hughes. The key is how well Smith is able to run. When he can burst for six and eight yards on first down, Seattle sometimes seems unstoppable on offense. When the Chargers have the ball The unknown factor is Muncie, who broke his left hand and dislocated a finger in the Denver game.

The doctors doubt if he will be able to play Sunday, but Don Coryell, a coach who respects Mun-cies desire, is not ruling his best running back out. With Muncie, the San Diego rushing game has to be respected. Without him, it does not. Either way, Fouts and friends will throw plenty of passes, although its not quite the same without John Jefferson, the All-Pro who was always effective against Seattle. Kellen Winslow caught 10 balls in Denver, but Charlie Joiner was surrounded by bright orange shirts most of the day and managed only three receptions for 32 yards.

Chargers defensive end Fred Dean vs. Seahawk tackle Ron Essink If the Chargers are to improve defensively, they need to revive their old pass rush. And Dean, who has not played much because of a contract dispute and various injuries, is the key. He must start to apply the pressure on the right side. Essink, in his second year, may have a busy day trying to keep Dean off Zorns back.

The only problem is that Dean announced on Wednesday that he was leaving the Chargers and would sit out this season and next season unless his contract is improved. After five days away from the team Dean is considered retired. Sunday is the fifth day. Seahawks wide receiver Steve Largent vs. Chargers nickel back Wyatt Henderson In defensive coordinator Jack Pardees new alignment, the Chargers go to a nickel back in all passing situations.

But he hurt an ankle so now Henderson, another newcomer, has the job.

Seattle will try to isolate Largent, one of the leagues most clever receivers, on Henderson and hope to hit him deep. Chargers wide receiver Charlie Joiner vs. comer-back Kerry Justin With Jefferson gone, Joiner has now become the Chargers big-play receiver. And for a change, little Charlie will look up to see a defensive back whos even smaller than he is. With all their motion and movement, the Chargers will try to spring Joiner one-on-one against Justin, particularly with slants across the middle.

Seahawks defensive end Jacob Green vs. Chargers tackle Russ Washington Green is one of the leagues coming young stars. The first four games of the season, he already has six sacks. Thats an All-Pro ratio. Hes quick and strong, but in Washington, hell be facing one of the biggest and most experienced blockers in the league.

This could be the days most interesting matchup. Chargers defensive tackle Gary Johnson vs. guard Edwin Bailey Bailey is a rookie, and in the background you can almost see Johnson smiling when he hears that. The Chargers All-Pro pass rusher is off to a very slow start, and you can bet hell make a big effort here to bust out of his slump. Bailey is talented and the Seahawks like Jose J.

Jimmy Carter was in his second year of office and Don Coryell was coaching in St. Louis. The country has changed presidents once in the meantime and the Cardinals have changed coaches twice. What once was a heated, exciting rivalry has become more than a little one-sided. The Cowboys have won seven meetings in a row, never missing a beat when Roger Staubach gave way to Danny White.

Theyve averaged 25 points a game since then and its always been enough. Every game has been a dogfight, said St. Louis safety Ken Greene, but the Cowboys always come out on top. Kickoff locally is Sunday at 10 a.m. on Channel 8 ATTENTION: HOMEOWNERS, BUILDERS ROOFERS.

Fire Safe Ad 108 is a clear, water base chemical, soluble in water, which after application becomes insoluble and acts as a fire retardant and wood preservative. The chemical is applied with a high pressure sprayer and with its content of phosphoric acid penetrates into the fibers of the material. Fire Safe Ad 108 is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, non- corrosive, mildly TM anti-bacterial, son, Tony Hill and Drew Pearson, the wide receivers, run excellent sideline patterns. Cowboys defensive end Harvey Martin vs.

Cardinals left offensive tackle George Collins The Cardinals have had so much trouble at left tackle that they yanked Keith Wortman from the lineup last week. Collins was only a marginal improvement. He missed one block against Tampa Bays Scott Hutchinson that nearly cost Jim Hart his head. Martin should keep Collins busy. Cowboys comerback Dennis Thurman vs.

Cardinals wide receiver Pat Tilley Thurman put the clamps on Tilley earlier this year, permitting him only three receptions in the game in Dallas. That was partly because he had help. This time, with speedster Mel Gray returning from injury, the Cowboys wont be able to afford the luxury of double covering Tilley. Cowboys tight end Billy Joe DuPree vs. Cardinals not-so-strong safety Lee Nelson Nelson was victimized last weekend in Tampa by Jimmie Giles, a DuPree look-alike at tight end.

Nelsons problem is that he gives away size and height, weighing only 185 and standing 5-10. The Cowboys dont go to DuPree that often, but they use him in critical situations. Two of his first four receptions this year resulted in touchdown plays. Cowboys wide receiver Butch Johnson vs. Cardinals comerback Tim Collier Johnson had a first-half field day against Collier when these two met three weeks ago.

He hauled in three receptions for 74 yards and the Cowboys scored at will. Collier has the speed to cover Johnson, but hes not quite as nifty as the receiver. That is why in his six-year career hes always been an on-again, off-again starter. Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett vs. Cardinals linebacker E.J.

Junior Although they havent said so officially, there is a good chance the Cardinals will make Dorsett Juniors responsibility. The rookie linebacker has exceptional speed and is a reliable tackier, which makes him a rarity on his club. He likely will spend all day Sunday disguised as Dorsetts shadow. More of the same is expected this week, when acquaintances are renewed in St. Louis.

Dallas, 4-0, needs to keep winning to keep pace with Philadelphia. Those two teams are tied for the divisional lead. St. Louis, 1-3, can absorb only a couple more blows before being pronounced dead. Last week, in a heart-breaking final four minutes, the Cardinals collapsed and were beaten in Tampa Bay.

Yet, strange things have been known to happen when a team gets cornered and desperate. Last year, for instance, after a three-game losing streak, the Cardinals upset Super Bowl-bound Philadelphia. They will be aided in this weeks task with the expected return to the lineup of Mel Gray. Gray, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in training camp, has been a Cowboy killer in the past. Fourteen of his career 43 touchdown receptions have come against Dallas.

When the Cardinals have the ball They generally like to run the wheels off O. J. Anderson in hopes of establishing a ground attack early. But their approach changes when they match up with Dallas, which is a bit more vulnerable to the pass. Pay particular heed to Cardinal wide receivers Pat Tilley, Roy Green and Mel Gray.

The Cardinals will try to isolate one of them in man-to-man coverage if they can. When the Cowboys have the ball They will run their offense from about three dozen different sets, and usually with someone in motion. But these are merely disguises for a small number of bread-and-butter plays. Favorite among them is Tony Dorsett running off tackle or around end, where he can cut back against the grain. Butch John and insect and vermin proof.

For more information call: Last-minute factors If comerback Carl Allen is unable to start because of a hamstring pull, Roger Wehrli will take his place for the Cardinals. Cardinal fullback Theotis Brown, who has missed the last two games, may be sidelined again this week because of a sprained ankle. Dorsett will probably wear a flak jacket for the game because of tender ribs that were bruised two weeks ago. FORGSTOP 744-4422 Associated Press Photo' Tony Dorsett is No.
