4 TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Thursday, October 31 1 985 Chargers Notes AMERICAS BEST SELLING SNAKESKIN Both Reeves and Elway said the Broncos are a better team this year than in 1984. Theres no question, Elway said. Were a year older, plus my progress as far as the passing game has made a big difference. Our passing game is much more efficient. The Broncos defense has also been playing well, allowing opponents just 305 yards per game.

Weve had an awful lot of injuries in our defense, Reeves said, but we seem to be stronger right now than weve been since training camp. The Chargers had a light practice Wednesday, which Coach Don Coryell said was designed primarily for players to heal bumps and bruised suffered in Mondays loss to the Raiders. Coryell added, however, that none of the Chargers injured players are expected to miss Sundays game with the Broncos. Five players are listed as probable on the official injury report Keith Ferguson (knee), Woodrow Lowe (abdominal muscle pull), Buford McGee (toe), Billy Ray Smith (hip) and Tim Spencer (ankle). Denver lists running back Gerald Willhite as questionable with a concussion, while tight end Clarence Kay (ankle), safety Dennis Smith (thigh) and linebacker Rick Dennison (ankle) are all probable.

As of this morning, approximately 2,000 tickets remained for Sundays game, meaning that a fourth straight local television blackout is likely. All tickets had to be sold by 1 p.m. today in order for the blackout to be lifted. Garrison of Valley Center joins Gillman By Jay Posner Times-Advocate Sportswnter SAN DIEGO Sid Gillman, the original coach of the Chargers, and Gary Garrison, one of the teams all-time leading receivers, will be inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame at halftime of Sundays game with the Denver Broncos at San Diego Stadium. Gillman, currently an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, coached the Chargers from 1960 to 69 and again in 1971.

San Diego won five American Football League West championships between 1960-65 under Gillman, and the team went on the claim the AFL title in 1963. Garrison, a resident of Valley Center, joined the Chargers in 1966 and caught 404 passes over the next 1 1 seasons. He played in the Pro Bowl following the 1971, 72 and 73 seasons. Gillman and Garrison will bring the total of Chargers hall of famers to 11 players and executives since 1977, when wide receiver Lance Al- worth was the first player inducted. Others are tackle Ron Mix, run- ning backs Paul Lowe and Keith Lincoln, guard Walt Sweeney, de- fensive tackle Ernie Ladd, quarter- back John Hadl, middle linebacker Chuck Allen and Barron Hilton, the teams founding owner.

Dan Reeves is known for hav ing an explosive temper, but the Denver coach is trying to tie up his temper these days. How? By wearing a necktie during games. Its helping my temper a little bit, said Reeves, who began wearing the tie in the third game of the season. Im handling (quarterback) John (Elway) better and there havent been any outbursts of temper. Whether its the tie or if Im maturing (hes 41 and in his fifth season as the Denver coach), I dont know, but it seems to work and Im going to continue to do it as long as its helping me calm down a little bit.

Elway said the key phrase there is a little bit. Hes a little calmer, the third-year quarterback said, although his fuse isnt much longer than it used to be. Hes been a lot easier on me than when I was a rookie, probably because Im having more success and not doing as many things wrong. Still, Elway said, Reeves temper has not vanished completely. He has one of the quickest tempers Ive ever seen, Elway said.

Hes a lot like (Chicago Coach Mike) Ditka. When someone said comparing anyone to the fiery Ditka was unfair, Elway replied, Whats wrong with Ditka? Hes a winner. So is Reeves. The Broncos have won four straight games and are 6-2 and tied for first place in the AFC West with the Los Angeles Raiders. Denver won the West last year with a 13-3 mark, and Reeves career mark is 40-25, a .615 winning percentage.

LONG-LASTING SHARKSKIN uniiii amin nt nmaara. 79 Were just going to have to work that much harder in the second half in order to get to the playoffs, I really still feel we have the capabilities of being a playoff team. San Diego lost i 26-21. Two weeks ago at Minnesota, the most crushing I blow of all. Leading 17-14 with six minutes left, the I Chargers defense wilted again, allowing the Vikings to score the winning touchdown with 19 seconds re-' maining. Yes, the winning pass was deflected. And, yes, the officials gave the Vikings a gift first down earlier on the winning drive.

But, when it came time to win or I lose a game they had to win, the Chargers found a way to lose. Whether they can recover is still in doubt. Losing games like the ones just mentioned have put the I Chargers in must-win situations against powerhouse teams like the Raiders and Broncos. They have vowed to fight back from Mondays embarrassing loss to the Raiders, but whether they can actually do that may be another story. Not that there havent been some positives to come out of the first half of the season: The passing game is still one of the top two or three in the league; Lionel James, Gary Anderson and Tim Spencer are bona fide offensive weapons; Kellen Winslow is back after knee surgery; No.

1 pick Jim Lachey and No. 2 selection Jeffery Dale have played well at tackle and safety, respectively; Lee Williams has developed into a fine defensive end; and Billy Ray i Smith is one of the leagues better inside linebackers against the run. By the same token, though, there are negatives: The defense is once again ranked last in the league this week, although it did show some improvement I immediately after Adolph replaced Tom Bass; the de- fensive and offensive lines both need reinforcing; Trumaine Johnson has been a disappointment, i catching only two passes thus far, and No. 2 draft pick Wayne Davis was beaten for seven TD passes early in the year and eventually lost his starting comerback job to No. 3 pick John Hendy.

The team, though, has not yet given up hope. Were just going to have to work that much harder in the second half in order to get to the playoffs, and I really still feel we have the capabilities of being a playoff team, guard Ed White said. If history is to be believed, though, the chances of the Chargers reaching the playoffs can be termed marginal at best. Over their last 35 regular-season games, the Chargers longest winning streak is two games. Thats right, two.

And, it happened only once, when the team defeated Detroit and Green Bay on consecutive Sundays last year. Simple arithmetic shows us the Chargers cant win six of their last eight games without a winning streak of two or longer, which means somethings going to have to give here. The Chargers can only hope its history. Palomar spikers still in championship hunt The Times-Advocate The Palomar College womens volleyball team registered a big win over San Diego Mesa Wednesday that helped the Comets keep pace with conference-leading JC roundup The Comets win kept them one game behind Grossmont at 5-1. Grossmont is 6-0.

The two teams square off at 7 p.m. Friday at the previously undefeated Palomar Comets with a 27-15 South Coast Conference win. The loss dropped the Comets to 1-1 in conference and 5-1 overall. You get so confident that you forget what its like to lose, said Palomar Coach John Woods. When youre No.

1, everybodys shooting for you. But it was a great dual meet. The match was much closer than the final scored indicated as the Comets lost four matches by two points or less. Palomar was ahead in three of those four matches. Jeff Hockaday had another outstanding performance at 142 pounds with his 10th fall in 12 matches.

Hockadays pin came at the 2:53 mark and raised his record to 12-0. Shawn Jorgensen (134) also registered a fall as he upped his record to 9-2. Rick Lambert was a 4-1 winner for the Comets at 167 pounds. The win gives Lambert a 9-2 mark. The Comets record dropped to 2-8-1 in the Pacific Coast Conference. We're having nothing but bad luck, said Palomar Coach Frank Hankin. Were just trying to finish off this season. Goaltender Andy Luther came on in the second half and played well in relief of Steve Hancock, as he allowed just one goal. In other PCC action, Southwestern scored twice in the final five minutes to take a 3-2 win over MiraCosta.

The Spartans had gone ahead with seven minutes to play on Joubin Sharifis goal that gave them a 2-1 lead. But the advantage was short-lived as Southwestern scored on a penalty kick and a breakaway in the final five minutes. Brett Banware scored the first MiraCosta goal with an assist from Beat Bossart. Cha Her was credited with a assist on Sharifis goal. This was definitely one of our 1 better matches of the season, Pal-; omar Coach Terri McFarland said of the Comets 15-10, 9-15, 17-15, 15-13 win over Mesa, which ended the first round of play in the Pacif-; ic Coast Conference.

Now we play Grossmont, but all the pressure is on them because no one expects them to lose. Tresa Glenn led the Comets with 12 kills and three stuff blocks. Gerrie Cunningham added nine i kills and four stuff blocks. Setter 1 Ella Basom was cited by McFar-; land for her serving and overall play. We played outstandingly well in singles, Mt. Carmel Coach Paul Robinson said of the Sundevils, who raised their overall record to 8-6. They played a lot of their better players in doubles and we fared well. Its nice to play without the pressure of a league match. Yvonne Arinduque, Neeti Shah, Pam Weckerly and Lynda Nario each won a two-set match.

The Sundevils No. 3 doubles team of Lori Belzman and Alison Bean also won their match. Kathy Ritsema. The match is especially important because it is the only regular season meeting between the two teams. Against Julian, the Crusaders were rarely pressed as setter Greta DeJorg hit on 12 of 13 serves and 11 of 12 spikes.

In the JV game, Ingrid Ton led Calvin Christian to a 15-10, 15-6 win to stay undefeated at 7-0. Tennis With outstanding play in singles, the Mt.
