James ran for 6 yards and James added 11 and 9 yards before Jackson raced into the end zone from the 10. Jackson wound up with 73 yards on 11 carries and James had 172 yards on 16 carries. Auburn almost scored again on the next to the last play of the game when James ran 94 yards for a touchdown that was called back on a clipping penalty. Afterwards, Maplesvilles Tommy Agee, who started his first collegiate game as the Auburn fullback, (See AUBURN, Page 4B) career at Auburn but transfered to Southern Mississippi when Pat Dye became Auburns coach in 1981, returned to Jordan-Hare Stadium.

He was held to 37 yards on 14 carries in the first half and 46 yards on 18 carries for the game. Auburn's first touchdown came wnen Southern Mississippi fullback demon Terrell fumbled and Carr recovered at the Golden Eagles 12. James, a senior, needed just two plays to get into the end zone, giving Auburn a 7-0 lead. Southern Mississippi came back on a series of short runs by DeJamette, his only consistent performance of the first half, that was capped when Steve Clark kicked a 38-yard field goal. (AP) Bo Jacksons two touchdowns and Lionel Little Train James 172 yards rushing sparked Auburn to a 24-3 football win over the University of Southern Mississippi here on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Jacksons scores came on a 10-yard run and on a 44-yard pass play from quarterback Randy Campbell, running the last 34 yards after the catch. A1 Del Greco added a 41-yard field goal and three extra points to cement the Auburn victory before 73,500 fans, the largest crowd ever to see a season-opening game at Auburn. Southern Mississippi noseguard Jerald Baylis gave the fourth-ranked Tigers a few headaches, sacking the quarterback and breaking up passes. But a stubborn Auburn defense led by Donnie Humphrey, Gregg Carr and Pat Thomas shut down Southern Mississippis offense.

Auburn Coach Pat Dye says his fourth-ranked teams 24-3 college football victory over Southern Mississippi wasnt very pretty, but he has the kind of squad that will get better each week. The Auburn coach said the game was a good test before the Tigers entertain Texas next Saturday. Turn to Page 4B for details. Football fans may have felt the burden was on Ray Perkins in succeeding the winningest coach of all time, but Perkins, with his first game behind him, said Saturday he felt no outside pressure in succeeding Bear Bryant.

But the Bryant aura was at the sold-out stadium, especially before the kickoff. See story on Page 4B. Sean Salisbury threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Timmie Ware with no time remaining to tie the contest, then a bad snap on the conversion attempt cost ninth-ranked Southern Cal the victory Saturday as the Trojans tied No.18 Florida 19-19. Selma High threw a scare into the states 5th-ranked Class 4A football team on Friday behind the passing of quarterback Anthony Tarver and the brilliant pass catching efforts of tight end Kevin Buster but before the final whistle blew, signaling an end to the game, Fairhope had worn down the battling Saints, 29-18.

Perkins newly-installed multiple offense sputtered at times and Alabama had periods of shoddy tackling, mostly in the first period. But in the end, the defense may have proved to be the difference in the contest as Georgia Tech crossed midfield only twice in the game.

Junior linebacker Emanuel Kings first quarter sack of Tech quarterback Stu Rogers, causing the young signal-caller to cough up the football, and tackle Randy Edwards recovered at the Yellow Jacket 20. Three plays later, Alabama quarterback Walter Lewis completed a 15-yard pass to halfback Joe Carter for the touchdown and the Perkins era had begun in earnest with 1 :35 gone in the contest. Freshman kicker Van Tiffin, the heir-apparent to graduated Peter Kim, added the extra point to make it 7-0. Tiffin then put the Crimson Tide up 10-0 with 3:15 remaining before intermission when he kicked a 39-yard field goal. Tiffin booted another field goal, this one for 45 yards, at 8:53 of the third quarter and just moments later, sophomore linebacker Todd Roper blocked a Georgia Tech punt which bounced loosely on the artificial turf of Legion Field until Tide comerback Stan Gay found the handle and returned it 32 yards for an Alabama touchdown.

Georgia Techs talented tailback, Robert Lavette, put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard early in the final quarter when he capped an 84-yard, 15-play drive with a 1-yard run. The TD was the 27th career touchdown for Lavette, a junior, and broke the school record of 26 set by Eddie Lee Ivery, now with the Green Bay Packers. An overflow crowd of 77,413 sat in the 93-degree temperatures to watch the first Alabama team in over 25 years take the field without Bryants presence. Bryant died Jan. 26, just six weeks after he announced his retirement as head coach and turned the head coaching reins over to the 41-year-old Perkins.
