THE SELMA TIMES-JOURNAL, TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 1946 COACH THOMAS GIVES LOCALS. GREAT CREDIT Parrish High Cage Champs Honored At Banquet As 100 Fans Attend Coach Frank Thomas said Monday night that tl Albert G. Parrish High School Tasketball state champions icted like champions, both on and off the courts while in Tuscaloosa for the 1945-46 state championship tournament and that Mhey proved to be champs in every sense of the word. He was climaxing his talk given at a banquet in honor of the local 'titlists at the YMCA, sponsored by the Hardy Hi-Y Club. No better commendation could have been given the boys who completed their Second straight year without tasting defeat on high school courts throughout the state and who tripped the best the state had to offer while winning their 53rd straight contest without defeat The banquet was a whale of a success, according to everyone present and that included most of Parrishs loyal basketball fans.

Many notable local sportsmen and officials were present to pay their respects to Coach Comer Sims and his 22 men. Among those present were Coach Thomas, of the Alabama football team, Mayor Lucien P. Bums, Maurice Bloch, president of the Seima Baseball Club and vice-president of the Southeastern League, Fred Hering, general manager of the Leafs. Bill1-Jones, aide-he-camp to Hering, Dr. C.

C. Thomas, president of the board of directors, Major Walter Jackson, former head of schools here and recently returned from overseas Rae Schuessler, publicity agent of the Crimson Tide, W. E. Snuggs, Geddes Self and Baxter Collins, of the local school setup and Wen-dall Parrish, YMCA physical director. Coach Sims introduced his -entire squad, including his spoke in the wheel of his athletic organization, Joe McNeill, manager, and without whom, according to Sims, his season couldnt have gone along as smoothly as it did.

Alabamas popular coach, Thomas, rose to 'the occasion when called upon to say a few words and compared the Parrish 1H46 champs with his 1945 football cnamps. He said their eagerness and will to win placet the two organizations in the same category and that their determination was not to be denied. He commended the local cagers for their conduct both on and off the basketball court and practically placed the responsibility of the success of the state meet to the Parrish squad. Kentucky Advances To National Final By MURRAY ROSE HEW YORK, Marcn 19 UFI Kentuckys smooth five, first team to be picked for the National Invitation Basketball tournament, and Rhode Islands wild-running Rams, last to be invited to the annual Madison Square Garden affair, will meet for the title Wednesday night. Top-seeded team of the tourney, the Wildcats from the bluegrass country were given a stiff battle by West Virginias Mountaineers last night before they were able to pull out a 59-51 victory and advance to the final round. Kentuckys pair of Jacks, Tingle and Pafkinson, along with Ralph Beard, were the key men in the Wildcats conquest. With the score tied for the 14th time during the spine-tingling tilt and less than two minutes to go, Tingle and Parkjn-son broke up the 51-all deadlock by plumping four field goals in the net. Tingle, who scored three of the late tallies, was high man of the game with 16 points.

Beard collected 15 markers and Parkinson 10. Howard Beverly was the West Virginia leader with 11 while Le-land Byrd and Dave Wilson netted 10 each. Larry Gilbert, after the usual greetings, asked him how his arm felt. Leo is a pitcher (if you dont know you should be ashamed) who ran the Craig Field baseball to three successful campaigns. In answer to Larrys query the Lion strode to the target range Friday In an intra-camp game of the Nashville Vols with whom he is working, and proceeded to complete three innings of beautiful ball-bending. One man got to first base and a teammates error (Twardys) afforded him that honor. Three innings, no hits, no runs, and it was Leos first appearance in a Nashville uniform since 1942.

Were awfully interested in your work this year, Leo. This department had the privilege of working with Leo while stationed at Craig and every minute of association with the big hurler was a pleasure. He was one of the most cooperative man weve ever tried to write about and his straightforward methods with the boys who worked under him and with everybody With whom he came in contact impressed us greatly. YOUNGEST SIGNERS The two youngest signers of the declaration of Independence were Edward Rutledge and Thomas Lynch, both 27, and both from South Carolina. iss professional golfers are inclined to think theres something phoney about those low scores, which have been returned in American tournaments.

In plain language, British golfers wont believe them, and to prove the point a couple of tough matchplaying gents, Dai Rees, the diminutive Welshman, who beaten Nelson in a Ryder Cup match, and the reigning open champion, Diek Burton, have indicateu they are willing to play Nelson for any amount of money he cares to put down, on any course, and at any time in Great Britain. There are other professionals over here who think that they have a good chance of taking plenty of dollars from the kingpin of American golf and the latest whisper around the golf alley is that Bobby Locke, the South African, would dearly love to play Nelson if and when he comes to England, now that the American has cancelled his South African tour. A former manager of a British Ryder Cup tem. a team which by the way, was well beaten in a hot weather American mateji. ha3 advanced the opinion that Nelson probably would be a flop, if he comes over here.

According to this critic, British professionals say its virtually impossible for any "golfer to an average of slightly over 67 per round in winning 19 tournaments as Nelson is reported to have done. This man, who lias a lifetime of experience in golf, and is recognized as one of the leading critics, here, said its all very well for Nelson to be able to tee up the ball through the fairways (that is, get a good lie, as in winter rues) play in matches where the stymie is eliminated and carry around with him nine or so "blasters to punch ball up to the green on American courses. But when he comes over here and plays on British courses, he will have to play wliat the Englishmen call real golf. In other words he won't be able to walk into a professionals shop and buy a club for the shot he wants. Hell have to make the shot himself.

This opinion Is, more or less, that held by Britains leading pros. All of which adds up to this: Byron Nelson; if he comes to Britain in the summer, will not lack challengers who think they can take him, and take him for plenty. Joe Cronin, starting his 12th campaign as boss of the Sox, has his old gang of fence-busters back, including Ted Williams, and he appears to have better oitching than he had in 1941 and 42, when his team was runner-up to the Yanks. Four times since Cronin took over the Red Sox he has had a club strong enough to battle its way into second place, and each time it was the Yankees who had that little something extra that made them champions.

If there is anything the Sox lack for the coming race it is not obvious, unless it is a third outstanding gardener. Williams, with his .356 batting mark the last year he played before entering the air corps, and the fleet Dom DiMaggio roaming the centerfield, are a pair any manager would cherish. The club has one of the games finest infield combinations in Bobby Doerr on second and Johnny Pesky at short. Not only can they field, but both walloped the ball well over .300 before joining up. Rudy York, obtained from the champion Detroits in a winter trade, is far from being a clown around the bag and he still Juts a long ball now and then.

A battle is going on for the moment at third-base, the job having been left open by the sale of Jim Tabor to the Phils. Ernest Andres and Ed Pellagrini, a pair of minor league stars just out af the service are the disputants, with the odds favoring Andres. The Sox are certain to get good pitching, and it could be great. Heading the staff is tall Tex Hugh-son, who posted an 18-5 record in 1944, and righ behind him is Dave (Boo) Ferris, the Rookie sensation of last season who won 21 while losing 10.
