(P- Notre Dams and Michigan State battled to a galling 10-10 tie that tailed to decide which should wear the national title Saturday and left a puzzled football world asking: Why didn't Notre Dame, the No. team, go for victory in the fading seconds, instead of playing for a tier Ara Parseghlan, ceach of the favored Fighting Irish, refused to apologize lor the conservative tactics which he dictated from the bench in the bizarre climax of the nationally televised contest. I didn't want to blow the game, he said. "I didn't want to lose the ball After the boys had made such a fine comeback and played 59)4 minutes of great ball, I didnt want to see them lose it in the last half minute.

He said he didnt want to risk the same mistake that happened when the second-ranked Spartans, deep in their own territory in the last period, gambled with the long pass which was inter Smith, threw the Irish back to the 24. The hopes of Notre Dame supporters in the record Spartan Stadium crowd of 80,011 died. The Irish were running straight power plays into the line when the game ended. The second-ranked Big Ten champions of Michigan State, seeking their second straight perfect 10-0 record and their 20th regular season victory in a row, scored in the second minute of the second quarter on a four-yard run by fullback Regis Cavender which was set up by a 42-yard pass from quarterback Jimmy Raye to fleet Gene Washington. Moments later, the Spartans were on the move again, driving from their own 18 under the expert signal calling and occasional running of the slender Raye to the Notre Dame 20.

It was here that Dick Kenney, Michigan States barefooted kicker from Hawaii, rushed into the game to boot a field goal, measuring 47 yards which shoved the Spartans in front 10-0. Notre Dame took the ensuing kickoff and struck for Ita only touchdown on three quick pass plays after Tom Quinn raced back 38 yards with the kickoff to Notre Dames 48. The climaxing, shot was a 34-yard shot from Coley OBrien, Notre Dames reserve sophomore quarterback, to right halfback Bob Gladieux, Eddy replacement. OBrien, who has played only when Notre Dame had moved into comfortable leads, took over the reins when Hanratty went down with an injured left shoulder and did an admirable job of directing the team under adverse conditions. It was ironic that Gladieux, a substitute for the injured Eddy, also went out limping in the third period.

Eddy, Notre Dames most explosive halfback who thi year had had four runs of between 51 and 83 yards, did not play. Troubled with a bad left shoulder, he suffered a bizarre injury when he slipped alighting from the team train Friday. Notre Dame 0 7 0 3 10 Michigan State 0 10 0 010 cepted by Tom Schoen. Shortly after the interception, Notre Dames Joe Azzaro missed a 41-yard field goal attempt that apparently would have won the game. Their kicker, Dick Kenney, is a strong kicker and has plenty of range, Parseghlan-said.

We didnt want to give him this chance." With 1:43 left on the clock and Notre Dame in possession at its own 30, Coley OBrien, with plays called from the bench, sneaked three times and gave the ball to Bob Bleier and Larry Conjar for plunges into the line with a first down interspersed. The game ended on the bizarre note of the offensive team, Notre Dame, trying to kill the clock and the defensive team, Michigan State, calling desperate time outs in hopes of getting the ball. We wanted the ball Duffy Daugherty, Michigan State coach, said. I dont want to comment on what Parseghian did. It's his business." The top-ranked Fighting Irish, their ace quarterback Terry Hanratty lost by injury in the first quarter, and playing entirely without their game-breaker halfback Nick Eddy, struck back after trailing 10-0 to deadlock the game with a 28-yard field goal by Joe Azzaro on the first play of the last period.

Then the Irish missed winning by a few agonizing yards when Azzaro failed on a field goal try from the Spartan 31 with less than five minutes remaining. Azzaros pressure kick slithered to the right of the goal posts. That wasted big break came after Irish safety Tom Schoen plucked a Michigan State pass out of the air at mid-field and raced to the Spartan 18. Quarterback Johnny Moseley directed the Linden attack superbly as they captured their eighth win of the season against only two losses.

He sent halfback Larry Etheridge thru the line for two yards in the first quarter with 5:34 left on the clock and then kicked the extra point himself. In the second quarter It was Etheridge again on a 39-yard run and Moseley missed the point after. This made it 13-0 at the half. There was no scoring in the third frame, but Moseley hit end Buster Ward from three yards out with 3:37 in the game and then kicked the point after. Barr set up the first score when he returned a punt 21 yards to the 14-yard line.

From there Jimbo Allen picked up five and Barr got seven yards for a first down on the two, Etheredge then lost two and Bart got it back before Etheredge scored. On the next score, Barr fumbled a punt and recovered. He ran for one yard to the 39 and Etheridge took it the other 39. In the final drive, a Citronelle interception was nullified by a penalty and Barr carried for 10 yards and Moseley went for four. He then passed to Ward for 12 yards to the nine.

From this point, Moseley lost four yards, but regained three of them on the next play and handed to Etheridge for two more. On the fourth attempt Moseley spotted Ward for the score. 1 I Scott, Bishop, Larry Allen ana Kenny Welch. All these ar either juniors or seniors. He attempted to divide the two teams equally and gave each of the youngsters an opportunity to see some action. There is one thing already apparent that has plagued Parrish teams In recent years lack of height. Steve Henry and Richard Bishop, who stand slightly over 6-2 are the tallest boys on the squad.
