Appearing to be bent on answering any questions posed about their ability to move the football on the ground, Alabama's Crimson Tide plied the forward wall of Clemsoo and passed just enough to keep them honest in taking a 26-0 victory here Saturday. Where quarterback Kenny Stabler had proved the Tide's aerial game would function well one week ago against Ole Miss the junior southpaw came back against the Tigers to prove that he knows how to run the football and has some help from mates such as Gene Raburn, Kenny Martin, Les Kelley, David Chatwood and Frank Canterbury. The fact that he is an alumnus of the Capstone and had a good coaching buddy across the field might have saved Clemson Coach Frank Howard a most embarrassing day. The play left you with the feeling that the score could have been just about what Coach Bear Bryant was willing to make it. He even admitted after the game that he got to do a little experimenting in the second half.

JK FLORIDAS STEVE SPURRIER Frontliners saw less than three minute of action during that final 30 minutes and a total of 62 Alabama players got into the game. Clemson threw a scare Into the 48,000 plus fans ia the expanded Denny Stadium stands on the opening kickoff when quarterback Larry Liberatore returned the kick 37 yards and was hauled down by the last Alabama man between him and the goal. But the Tigers got no further than the Alabama 26 and when they missed a field goal attempt Alabama was off on a 80 yard march that stuck to the ground until the final play when Stabler threw to Dennis Homan for eight yards and a score. This set the trend for an afternoon that saw the Tide run up 227 yards on the ground and 113 thru the air. Stabler hit seven of eight thru the air for Florida State missed victory by mere inches with time running out as Banker Lane Fenner was ruled out of bounds when he tdok Gary Fabric's pass hi the Florida eno wee.

Time Is Al Hand If Bears Are Going To Move In NFL By BEN THOMAS BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Underdog Texas gambled repeatedly in a frantic effort to get more points on the scoreboard Saturday night but had to settle for a 7-7 tie with Louisiana State. The Tigers, a' 10-point favorite for the contest before a sellout crowd of 67,512, also threw caution to the winds as. the minutei ticked away in an attempt to break the deadlock. The Tigers efforts fizxled and A Ms just wouldnt work.

The Aggies attempted two field goals one from the six-yard line after tying the game in the second quarter. Neither boot was good. LSU also attempted two field goals. After the second period touchdowns by both teams, the game wore down to the final frantic five minues. quarterback Edd Hargett couldnt find his receivers.

LSU quarterback Fred Haynes pass was intercepted by Law-son Howard at the Aggie 47. A got down to the 39 but was forced to punt again. LSU took over on the 20 and three plays later Tiger Coach Charlie McClendon put in quarterback Trey Prather, who had callet only three offensive plays previously in his varsity career. Prather, on the 34, tried to throw a long pass but it was intercepted by A Ms Curley Hallman at the Aggie 36. Three plays later, with 22 seconds left, Jerry Joseph stole a Hargett pass on the LSU 13 and as the final gun sounded Bill Hobbg took away a Prather pass on the LSU 32.

The Tigers dominated the game In the first half, getting 183 yards total to 66 for the Aggies. The Aggies showed much more offensive spark after intermission and the game wound up with LSU getting 264 overall, 232. Haynes gained 81 yards rushing, but 76 of them came in the first half. He directed the Tigers on a 65-yard scoring thrust which began late in the first quarter and wound up with 12:59 to go in the second when Gawain Dibet-ta went over from the one. in the drive, Haynes had runs of 6, 9, 7, II and four yards.

It left LSU, of the Southeastern Conference, with a 2 1-1 record while A a member of the Southwestern Conference is now 1-2-1. S- TM bU Spurrier era Late Virginia Tech Score Whips Kentucky Wildcats that would have gone tor a long score, but he juggled it for about 10 yards and couldnt hold on. By the same token an alert play by Selmas Billy Johnson, who played much of the second half at offensive guard, might have prevented a Clemson touchdown.

On a fumble in the Alabama backfield, Johnson outbattled a couple of Clemson players inside the Tides 10 yard line for the ball and came up with it. Except for the opening thrust on the kickoff Clemson never came close except on one occasion when quarterback Jimmy Addison had a perfect screen set up and the sideline called off and he underthrew his receiver. Saturday's win for the Crimson Tide set the stage for next Saturdays clash in Knoxville with Tennessee, loser to Georgia Tech yesterday. Addision hit 10 of 18 tosses for 109 yards during the day for Clemson and Jacky Jackson had 38 yards rushing against the tough Alabama defense. Stan Moss, junior linebacker, and Mike Sasser, sophomore safetyman playing in place of the injured John Moseley, came up with pass interceptions for the Tide.

Moss was also credited with six tackles to lead there. Linebacker Bob Childs had four with six assists. The Crimson Tide offensive line just kept pecking away at the Tiger defensive front, moving the big linemen back a few yards at the time in the 80 yard drive that culminated in the pass to Homan. Raburn, Canterbury, Stabler, Martin and Chatwood just ate up the yardage with the longest being an eight yard blast by Raburn. used his two excellent receivers Ray Perkins and Homan on the next Alabama touchdown scoring series.

He tossed first to Homan for 11 yards and whipped a bullet to Perkins for 14 more. Les Kelley then turned right end for 30 yards in his only offensive play of the day. Stabler hit Perkins again for 12 yards and a first down on the Clemson two. Chatwood picked up one and Stabler sneaked it in. Stabler rifled a 14 yard pass to tight and Wayne Cook on the second play of the last half.

Homan, who runs the ball infrequently, turned right end for 38 yards and the last Clemson man got him. Stabler then passed 8 yards for the score. Davis wrapped it all up when he placed his 36 yarder thru the uprights after Trimple had passed to Brewer for 24 yards as the big play in a 10-play series. Alabama Coach Paul Bryant said that the most outstanding part of Alabamas game was its punt coverage. And we moved the ball on the ground Saturday, which we didnt do in our first two games, Bryant said. "(Quarterback Kenny) Stabler was outstanding again and (Dennis) Homan, and (Ray) Perkins gave Clemson so many problems it helped us in more ways than one. Bryant said that he wag happy Alabama moved to an early lead because it gave him a chance to "experiment a little in the second half. Bryant said that the Tide did not rush the passer well but 1 give Clemson the credit for that.

The Clemson coach called Alabama a "heck of a ball club. Alabama has everything a good football team ought to have. He said he didn't think Alabama was as easy to play as Georgia Tech, who defeated Clemson 13-12 a week ago. "Im hoping thig game will do us some good because we have Duke next week and Southern Cal the next and end up with five straight conference games, Howard said. By KEN HOSKINS LEXINGTON, Ky.

(AP) After three quarters of see-saw football, Virginia Tech combined a passing and running attack to topple favored Kentucky 7-0 in a non-conference football game Saturday night. Techs touchdown came at the end of an 11-play, 65-yard drive with Tommy Francisco plunging over from the one. Quarterback Tommy Stafford launched the offensive which moved the ball to the Kentucky 22. And, he began calling on Francisco who carried on five plays to the Kentucky one from where he plunged across on fourth down. Dicky Lyons set it in motion with a 40-yard return of a Tech punt. Roger Walz took to the air and rallied Wildcat hopes with his passing. But, on the final play an aerial to tailback Larry Seiple went for no gain and Kentucky was forced to take its second loss in four starts. The teams struggled through most of the time.
