Freeman attempted 17 passes and completed 11 for 341 yards and the two touchdowns. Pybum, leading pass catcher in the conference, had six receptions for 147 yards. Childress, a powerful and agile ball carrier, rushed 16 times and netted 114 yards.

Auburn got going late in the first quarter, although the start wasn't a happy one. Freeman passed 41 yards to Pyburn on the Tulane five but the play was called back on an offside penalty. But just two plays later Freeman tossed a short five-yard aerial to Childress and the big fullback continued 60 yards for the first score. Key blocks were delivered near the goal line by Pyburn and guard Bob Scarbrough. The club ctme in following that touchdown and sub center Frank Reeves set up the second core by recovering Tulane tackle Dalton Truax's fumble of a short kickoff on the Wave 44.

It took the Tigers just six plays to cover the 44 yards, James cutting outside right tackle from the nine for the score 2 Vi minutes after the start of the secohd period. Auburn picked up IS first downs to eight for Tulane, with most oi the Greenie first downs coming arly in the game. The Tigers got 176 yards rushing and 280 passing to 74 and 57 for the Wave.
