C2 TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Friday, August 29, 1 986 Chargors Notos der), Pat Tilley (hamstring) and J.T. Smith (back) will all sit out this game. Green and Tilley combined for 170 yards on eight receptions when these two teams last met, during the 1983 regular season. St. Louis won that game 44-14.

St. Louis is expected to play starting quarterback Neil Lomax less than a half tonight. Backups Rick Mclvor and Kent Austin will split the remainder of the game. In their last three games, Cardinals opponents have completed just 41 percent of their passes (36 of 88, 395 yards). St.

Louis has intercepted seven passes in those three games, including three in last weeks 14-7 victory over defending Super Bowl champion Chicago. The Chargers have beaten the Cardinals only once in six preseason tries a 38-27 victory in 1970. The Chargers announced there are about 3,000 tickets remaining for next Sundays regular-season opener against Miami. Tonights game will be broadcast live on KLZZ (600). Channel 10 will show a tape of the game Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

safety Jeffery Dale will play for the first time this summer following arthroscopic knee surgery. With Gill Byrd the only other healthy safety, cornerback Danny Walters will see some action at that position tonight. The third safety on the roster, John Hendy, iq still recovering from a knee injury. Coryell has been hoping Hendy will be able to return in time for next weeks regular-season opener against Miami, but the chances of that occurring are growing slimmer. Hes coming along, but I dont think hell be ready for Miami, trainer Mark Howard said.

He has to make a lot of improvement before he can start running, and hes got to start running before he can start practicing. Howard said Hendy will be day-to-day as far as practicing next week. There is however, some good news for the Chargers secondary. Wes Smith and Scott Holman, a pair of rookie wide receivers who have not played a down this summer, will start for the Cardinals tonight. Veterans Roy Green (shoul Andy Hawkins need to impress the coaches tonight.

Quarterback Tom Flick is apparently safe, though Coach Don Coryell said, Its real easy to play your way off the team. Flick, who will likely play the last three quarters after Dan Fouts starts, passed for 287 yards in one half in his only outing of the summer. Wednesday, Coryell said it is very likely Flick will make the team. We anticipate him doing as well as he did the other half he played, Coryell said. That doesnt mean, though, that Flick has to pass for 287 yards again.

No, he doesnt have to do that, but it would ease our minds, Coryell said. One of the players who will be battling for a job, Wyatt, just reported to the Chargers Thursday after being claimed on waivers from Miami. He did not arrive in time for practice, but he will play tonight. I met Wyatt and told him, You have a whole evening to learn our system, Coryell said. Elsewhere in the secondary, Ryan Continued from page Cl tRyan rips into his own players, re-'1fers to them as trash, says that Cutting them was such a simple natter that his wife could have done it, or blasts off on some other target.

You have to wonder, in light of Ryans bombastic journey through t'- his first Eagles preseason, if the pew coach in town is really the fearless, no-holds-barred the-hell-with-everybody tyrant he ap-pears to be, or if his repeated out- bursts conceal an insecurity that -would hardly be surprising in a -I longtime assistant embarking on his first head job in the big leagues. Is the bombast an act? No, it seems safe to say; its Buddy Ryan. Hes no different now than he was 25 years ago when I first knew him Z': in Buffalo, said Philadelphia sportscaster A1 Meltzer, who cant wait to co-host Buddy Ryans show once the regular season starts. No wonder. Ryan has proved to be a fine pick as Marion Camp-1 bells successor at least from the short-range point of view.

Ticket sales have boomed. The town is talking Eagles football again. No way crowds would have been showing up at the Vet for preseason games if David Shula or, for that matter, Jim Mora had taken the job. I The long-range impact remains I to be seen. Ryan may have stirred up the populace with his words, but starting a week from Sunday in Washington, the numbers on the scoreboard will be what matters.

If Ryan produces Results as startling as his outbursts, the man will become a folk hero in this town. If his promises go up in smoke once the season begins, the Buddy System will begin to wear thin. One thing is certain: The Eagles top management is sitting firmly atop the Ryan bandwagon as it bounces along, picking up speed and followers as it goes from outburst to outburst, controversy to controversy. Those who question Ryans approach are clearly in the minority at this point. Norman Braman, for one, is sold on the guy, obviously delighted at the way hes stirred up the fans and, it is hoped, the football team, convinced that the playoff promise was no idle boast.

And president-general manager Harry Gamble has spotted some genuine substance behind the nonstop rhetoric. The one thing everybody said was that he would get the most out of his players, Gamble said. At this level, where the talent is all relatively similar, the ingredient that might contribute to being a winner is the coach who can get the most out of his talent. If Ryan really has that elusive ability, as so many say he does, weve just seen the start of the excitement. If not, a lot of Eagles opponents will delight in making him eat some of those words that keep pouring out.

The Eagles may have been losers the last four years, but Ryan has seen to it that National Football League teams will be pointing to them, Sunday after Sunday, in 1986. That could prove costly. Whatever happens, though, it wont be dull, which might have been the biggest rap against Ryans predecessor. Ill tell you one thing I really like about Buddy, Gamble said. Hes a decision-maker.

No hesitation. No hemming, no hawing. He makes up his mind, and let the critics be damned. Not a bad attribute for a head football coach. In the end, though, only the bottom line will count.

Buddy Ryan has one thing in common with all of the other coaches in this league: He, too, ultimately will be judged not on his words, not on his promises, but on his won-lost record. the kinks out of the 46 defense yet, Jets Coach Joe Walton said. The Jets Ryan, who completed 12 of 17 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns, said the Eagles blitzed on both scores and receiver Johnny Hector was wide open. The 46 is a confusing defense, the quarterback said. You can get into trouble with the blitz if you dont read it right.

But if you pick up their guys correctly you can make some big plays. The Eagles piled up 321 yards on the Jets defense, throwing for 208 yards and rushing for 113. Five players get last try to make team By Jay Posner Times-Advocate Sportswriter SAN DIEGO Five jobs will be on the line tonight when the Chargers close out their preseason schedule with a 7 p.m. game against St. Louis at San Diego Stadium.

The Chargers are 2-1 this summer, while St. Louis is 2-2. San Diego has finished with a 2-2 record in the preseason in five of the past six years. The Chargers roster currently lists 50 players, but five must be lopped off by 1 p.m. Monday.

The likely scenario has the Chargers cutting a wide receiver, an offensive lineman, a defensive back and two linebackers. All of which means players like wide receiver Timmie Ware, offensive lineman Curt DiGiacomo, cor-nerbacks Kevin Wyatt and Donald Brown, and linebackers Gary Plummer, Ronnie Washington and Winslow Continued from page Cl catching 89 passes again, thats for sure. Then again, as Winslow himself said, Its not necessary for me to catch 89 passes like I did in the past because of the depth of our (offensive) unit. There will be games when the tight end is a key figure and there will be games when Im asked to do other things. That was the case last year, when Winslow spent more time as a blocker and a decoy than as a pass receiver.

The goal last year, in our minds, was to have Kellen get in there and feel like in the future he could be a great player again, Nicklaus II MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Jack Nicklaus II, son of one of golfs biggest stars, struggled to a 9-over-par 81 Thursday in his PGA Tour debut at the St. Jude Classic. I dont think I played very good, Nicklaus said after completing his first round as a professional. I hit very few greens.

Id like to play it over again. Nicklaus father, Jack, is a fivetime PGA player of the year and has won 18 major golf championships, including this years Masters scored the game-tying touchdown last week against the Rams. My first touchdown since Oct. 21, 1984, Winslow pointed out. Thats the thing I want to improve on, not the number of catches, but the number of times I get in the end zone.

I have nothing to be disgruntled about this summer, Winslow added. The way Im running now, compared to last year, is like night and day. The things Ive gone through are necessary for someone whose had reconstructive surgery. There have been hills and valleys, but the question is whether Ill be ready when we play the Dolphins (Sept. 7).

I think I will be. I just want to catch a pass, turn upfield and rumble the way I used to. balls, turn it upfield, and get us that first down like he has so many times. Plus, he might not be doubled (in coverage) as much as in the past because theyll start covering Lionel (James) and Gary (Anderson). In the past, they were crawling all over him.

Physically, hes just about there, Coryell added. And hes such a proud person, a competitor, I dont think theres any way to keep him down. Said Saunders: Kellen will be as good as he determines he wants to be this year. Entering the final preseason game of the summer tonight against St. Louis, Winslow has been solid, though not spectacular, with nine catches for 129 yards.

He Saunders said. In his mind, he was waiting for a game with 15 catches and five touchdowns, and that wasnt going to happen. I dont think he fully understood that initially, but looking back, I think he does now. Agreed Winslow: I came back with the idea that after two weeks, Id be as good as new. It didnt work that way.

It may this year, however. Since April, Chargers Coach Don Coryell has said he expects Winslow to have a big year. Thursday, Coryell said nothing has happened this summer to cause him to change that opinion. I hope we can get him the ball a lot on that short inside stuff, Coryell said. Hell catch the short struggles in at the age of 46.

Nicklaus II, 24, like most of the other golfers in the $500, 000-plus tournament, was bothered by gusty winds and damp conditions as he played the Colonial Country Club course. The wind made a lot of shots very tough, Nicklaus said. Curtis Person, R-Memphis, and Persons wife, Geraldine.

Person said he has known Nicklaus for many years. Nicklaus, teeing off on the back nine, bogeyed Nos. 12 and 14 and double-bogeyed the par-5, 512- yard 16th hole. On the front nine, he bogeyed the first, second, fourth, sixth and ninth holes. He had a birdie on No.

New York Jets feasted on Philadel- phia Eagles Coach Buddy Ryans famed 46 defense. 1 The Jets beat the Eagles 37-30 Thursday night in the preseason finale for both NFL clubs, amass- ing 409 yards, 325 passing and 84 rushing. 2 The Jets turned to their advan-22 tage the all-out blitzing attack that Ryan used last year as defensive coach for the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears.

Quarterbacks Ken OBrien and Pat Ryan picked Dp the rush and found receivers wide open. Matt wins battle of the Bahrs LOS ANGELES (AP) It was a good night for the Bahr brothers, but in the end, Matt was a little more successful than Chris. Matt, the Cleveland placekicker, booted six field goals Thursday night including a 34-yarder with rve seconds remaining which gave the Browns a 25-22 National Foot-D ball League preseason victory over the Los Angeles Raiders. Chris, the Raiders kicker, connected on all three of his field goal attempts. The two spent some time afterwards talking in the Los Angeles dressing room.

When asked about playing against his brother, Matt said with a smile, We were never playing on the field at the same time. As far as doing his job, Matt said, That was the most field goals Ive ever kicked in a game. You just dont usually get that many chances. It doesnt matter much, anyway. Matt was referring to the fact that the game was a preseason affair.

The BrQwns finished with a 4-0 record this summer, giving them a perfect preseason record for the fourth time. Cleveland Coach Marty Schot-tenheimer seemed pleased that his team was able to come back from a 22-9 halftime deficit. Coach Tom Flores of the Raiders said his team played a good first half, but in the second half, we just didnt play well enough. We left our defense on the field too long. The offense just didnt generate enough yardage.

The game appeared headed for overtime before cornerback Mike Harper intercepted a pass by third-string Los Angeles quarterback Rusty Hilger at the Raiders 30-yard line and returned it 10 yards with 38 seconds remaining. After a four-yard run by Herman Fontenot, the Browns let the clock run down before Matt Bahr booted his game-winner. The Browns had forged a 22-22 tie earlier in the fourth quarter on field goals of 39 and 29 yards by Bahr. The Raiders had scored on their first four possessions to take a 19-3 lead. Field goals of 42 and 32 yards in the first quarter by Chris Bahr made it 6-0.
