Washington to his illustrious dramatic repertoire, said there also were necessary changes in adapting Anderson's play to TV, a task performed by Sidney Carroll. "I read the play, a very sprawling, verbose work, which had to be rewritten because Anderson was such a fluent writer," Basehart said. "The verbiage was very high blown.

I think the play was written in 1934 when the attitude toward patriotism was quite different than it is today. We tried to tell the story in much simpler terms than he had done." Many characters had to be eliminated. For example, there wasn't time to include the girl dressed as a boy who carried messages between Gen. Howe and Washington. However, the backbone of Anderson's play how Washington held the revolution together and how he and his 1,500 men endured those terrible winter days and nights of 1777-8 remains.

Basehart said that many of the facets of Washington's life his father-son relationship with Lafayette, his relationship, with his men and his difficulty in communicating with others do come through. "Washington was an unapproachable man, a very inward man," added Basehart. "He was never one of the boys. He was not a man who spoke easily. Hamilton, Burr and some others had low opinions of him." In portraying Washington, Basehart said he tried to find "the quality in the man that held when everything else was going down the drain." He found Washington to be "a man with a fire growing inside; the men around him felt it, and that's the reason they stayed with him." Anderson's play is not an exploration of Washington's character, which Basehart hopes one day soon can be done.

"Valley Forge" is the first production Columbia Pictures TV, which owns the rights to the play, has done jointly with Hallmark. It was taped in 12 days using the three-camera technique. Outdoor location was six days in Canada, primarily because when the company was ready to shoot last March- April, the area around Toronto was the only place that had real snow left. "It would have been fine if it had snowed during the taping to fit the story," said Al J. Simon, creative production manager.

"Unfortunately it didn't, but we sure had lots on the ground."
