D2 TIMES-ADVOCATE. Escondido, Thursday, Jan. 14, 1982 -mrnr Briefly Chargers from I -A Aire services Continued from page D1 King defeats Pam Casale CINCINNATI Billie Jean King, playing in her first major tennis tournament in 10 months, defeated 18-year-old Pam Casale, 7-5, 6-4, Wednesday night in -the second round of the $150,000 Avon Tennis Cham- pionships of Cincinnati. he may choose to retire. White has one year remaining on his contract and he is expected to fulfill those terms, but the coaches would like him to work harder in the off-season.

The Chargers have a number of young offensive lineman in Bob Rush, Chuck Loewen, Jeff Williams, Sam Claphan, Brad Hendrix and Drew Gissinger. What that means is that Rush, the most experienced of the reserve linemen, might be traded so the Chargers can get some defensive help. The problem is that Rush, the teams deep snapper, may not command as high a price as the Chargers hope. In other second-round matches Wednesday night, Bettina Bunge downed Mary Lou Pia-tek, 6-1, 6-4, and Pam Shriver defeated Lea Antonopolis 6-1, 6-0. Q- -H? 1 1 King began her come-' back Tuesday with a 6- 3, 7-6 victory over Rosa- lyn Fairbank of South Africa.

King wasnt certain she would play her second-round match because her opponent, Casale, was fighting off an attack of the flu. When the match started, King jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second set. But she said she was thrown off stride when Casale took an injury timeout and left the court for a few minutes. King is making a rare appearance in tournament competitor DEFENSE DEFENSIVE LINE Leroy Jones, Louie Kelcher, Gary Johnson and John Woodcock form a very good starting front four. The Chargers are also extremely high, on young Keith Ferguson and there is talk that he may replace Jones if Jones is traded for a high draft pick, a linebacker or defensive back.

The other San Diego reserve linemen are veterans Jimmy Webb, Wilbur Young and Charles DeJurnett, who missed the entire season with knee and ankle problems. Webb and Young play hard, but are well beyond their prime. DeJurnett is a good, but not great player when hes healthy. The Chargers have one young player, Richard Ackerman, on injured reserve. Another possibility here is the signing of free agent tackle Bruce Clark, a former No.

1 pick of the Green Bay Packers. Clark chose to play in Canada, but becomes a free agent March 1. The signing of Clark could open up several trade possibilities. ffoaf 'arks optional pass you. In fact, considering its rugged construction, the only thing you may notice passing are the years.

The athletes had covered about 60 meters when they ran at top speed into a banner-waving group of nine demonstrators, bringing down Lattany and Kent. Kent suffered an injured thigh when he appeared to be kneed by one of the protesters, who immediately fled from Olympic Park. Lattany said he pulled his "back slightly in an attempt to avoid the demonstrators, who were protesting against the meets sponsor, Alcoa. Starters Linden King, Bob Horn and Woodrow Lowe were consistently criticized in 81 sometimes rightfully so. King, however, is young and has a chance to be a very good linebacker in the next year or two. Lowe, who used to be able to cover the pass, had a bad year in 81.

Horn is a fine linebacker against the run, but also has trouble covering the pass. Late in the year, he was often replaced by Jim Laslavic on passing downs. The return to health of Cliff Thrift will help in 82, but hes not the answer to the Chargers defensive prayers. KIRK VOLVO 850 El Cajon Blvd. (714) 440-3112 NATIONAL CITY WESTCOTT MOTORS, INC.

San Diego figures to take a middle linebacker in the draft. A trade is also a possibility, but teams in the AFC are unwilling to give the Chargers what they need most. Canadian posts record time GRINDELWALD, Switzerland Gerry Sorensen posted a record time today and won her second World Cup downhill ski race in 24 hours on the tough Tschuggen course. The 23-year-old Canadian finished in 2 minutes, 14-'100ths of a second, nearly a half-second ahead of West German Irene Epple, whose second-place finish gave her the lead in the overall World Cup standings. American Cindy Nelson finished third on the course rated the most demanding on the womens World Cup circuit.

Tapp, of South St. Paul, who has led since last Mondays opening round, had a 5,425 total after 24 games and a 132-pin lead over runnerup Jim Miller of Mesa, Ariz. Miller, 20, who is competing in his second Professional Bowlers Association tournament, had a 5,293 total through three rounds. Miller finished 13th in last weeks PBA event at Anaheim.

Marshall Holman of Medford, rolling Wednesday night on the final squad of the third round, totaled 1,798 and was in third place at 5,292, just one pin behind Miller. DEFENSIVE BACK Perhaps no group in football took more heat from the media and the fans than the Chargers defensive back-field and with just cause. Comerback Willie Buchanon is a crafty veteran, but has lost a step. His place in 1982 will be strong safety. Mike Williams, the other corner, is very good, but was hampered by injuries.

The safeties after mid-season were Glen Edwards at free and Pete Shaw at strong. Edwards is sure to retire. He was bidding his teammates farewell on the bus from Riverfront Stadium to the Cincinnati airport. With Edwards departure, Shaw figures to slide over to free safety. None of the 1981 backup men appear ready to assert themselves in 82.

Safety Bob Gregor is a very average player as is Frank Duncan, who was hurt the last part of the year. Rookie Wyatt Henderson was forced to play the comer and was totally outclassed. Another rookie third-round draft pick Irvin Phillips didnt play a down of defense after the fourth game of the season. Allan Ellis, the nickel back, was once a super comer. Now he is a 31-year-old man with an arthritic knee.

There has been talk that former All-Pro comerback Mike Haynes of New England is available at the right price. If he is even a shadow of his former self, he could help in San Diego. The Chargers have a problem. They need a middle linebacker and a comerback to compete for the Super Bowl again in 82. Without a first-round draft pick this year (it was traded to New Orleans in the Wes Chandler deal), someone is going to have to go.

The best guess is Rush or Jones will be traded for a high draft pick or a veteran defender. Only time will tell, but the moves should start coming sometime after the Super Bowl.
