It's quiet in Dolphinville as Miami's season ends Sunday noon, though, It seemed that way outside Dolphins GHQ. NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY. SWIM AT OWN RISK, a battered sign warned. It need not have bothered. The single tiny seagrape, three puny palms and nine crotons lining the buildings front were not likely to go swimming.

Fifteen hours after Don Shulas team had clawed back from that cataclysmic combination of horrors building to a 24-0 Chargers lead, even the wind spoke below a whisper In Dolphinville. D4 TIMES ADVOCATE, Escondido, Ca Monday, Jan 4, 1982 Records, notes and quotes from the Chargers' game By John Maffei The Times-Advocate MIAMI Saturdays 41-38 overtime victory by the San Diego Chargers over the Miami Dolphins produced several NFL playoff records some of which were overlooked originally. Here Is a complete list of the records find a few leftover notes and qoutes from Saturdays AFC Playoff Game In the Orange Bowl: Most passes attempted in a game: 53 by Dan Fouts of San Diego old record 49 by Joe Namath of the New York Jets vs. Oakland, 1968 and Billy Kilmer of Washington vs. Minnesota, 1976.

Uwe von Schamanns blocked field goals of 43 and 34 yards? Any team that must rely on a field goal to win must hold all of itself accountable. There surely Is no blaming Miami passing after 21 first downs on Don Strocks 397 yards. Three first downs rushing? Puny, but who uses the run to catch up from 24 back? David Woodley? The Chargers sacked him three of the mere six plays he ran before San Diego had its 24 points.

He had to come out because only a very big arm has a ghost of a chance to deliver a team from -woods that thick, and Woodley averaged only 100.5 yards passing his last six games. Look at it this way. If football games won Emmys, Miami-San Diego 82 would be a lock. Even the press box, whose lugubrious denizens are seldom incited, almost broke Into a fistfight. When Chargers General Manager John Sanders kept yelping, a Rochester writer named Rudy Martzke arose, pointed a finger at Sanders and bellowed, There -will be no cheering In this press box! Sanders melted away.

The Dolphins refused to melt away until Benirschkes kick tumbled through the goal posts, as terminally In reverse for Miami as Garo Yepremi-ans had In Kansas City a decade of Christmas nights ago. Noon on Sunday at Biscayne College delivered the only retort. Silence. The Dolphins graveyard shift began on the dot of 9 oclock on Saturday night when San Diego Chargers Benirschkes 29-yard field goal tolled them out the playoffs, 41-38, In 13 minutes and 52 seconds of overtime. Nobody was working this shift.

Football clothes hung untended inside the training-camp pillbox. After 174 days of sweating and bleeding enough to bring Lake Okeechobee up a foot, the Dolphins were going nowhere but home. For four hours on Saturday, 73,735 people In the Orange Bowl and maybe 50 million more slack-jawed front of TV sets had thought of something besides and refugeeism In Miami. The world would not stop turning on its axis because the Dolphins lost the wildest shootout in National Football League playoff history after going hullet for bullet azainst the best pro offense ever. What would conversation have helped? The Dolphins season Is over because they could not stop quarterback Dan Fouts and 6-5 tight end Kellen Winslow, whose passions are music played by George Benson and Bobby Blue Bland and passes thrown by Fouts.

You dont blame men who go out on their shields. Stanley finding Livingston was easier than the Dolphins coming from 24 behind and then leading by seven before losing by three. The largest welcome-home party in the clubs 21-year history an estimated 8,000 fans paid tribute to the Chargers and their wild victory, staying up to greet the team buses at 2:30 a.m. Sunday when they arrived at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Early revelers began gathering within an hour after the game ended, warming themselves with a roaring bon fire and victory chants. When the buses arrived, fireworks exploded and and screaming fans climbed atop police cars for a closer look as team members rushed to their cars.

The first of the early-bird arrivals was Dave Terwilliger, 20, who arrived, a sleeping bag in hand, minutes after the game ended. He set up camp in front of the ticket office, waiting for Mondays sale of 2,500 tickets that would have gone on sale had Buffalo upset Cincinnati on Sunday. Within 30 minutes after the game, the ticket line had grown to 20 and the first motorhome arrived a short time later, prepared for a long wait. Many of the fans were too young to remember the Chargers only pro football title. That came in 1963 when they demolished the Boston Patriots, 51-10, for the American Football League crown.

There have been six overtime games in the playoffs. Here are some highlights: All six times both teams have had at least one possession. Three times the team that won the toss won the game. Four games were decided by field goals. The average length of the six overtimes Is 15 07.

Miami Coach Don Shula on the Chargers: I said before the game that the Chargers can beat you by passing the ball. they did. Miami defensive back Mike Kozlowski, who propped at San Dieguito High School: I dont know if the Chargers will be able to get past Cincinnati next week (in the AFC Championship Game). Its not that the Bengals are better, but its the fact that we beat the Chargers up physycally. Its very tough to come back and win the next week after playing a physical game.

But the Chargers showed me an awful lot of character by coming back. I respect them a lot for their effort. Cincinnatis effort on Saturday wasnt bad. The Dolphins were down 24-0 in the first quarter. If they had railed to win the game, it would have been the great come-from-behind victory In NFL playoff history.

The greatest comeback was Detroit In 1957. The Lions beat the 49ers, 31-27, in a game in Kezar Stadium after trailing 27-7. Willie Buchanon of the Chargers on his team's defense: In the overtime, we played football. Before that, we werent very good. Our offense scored enough to win.

If we had lost, It would have been on the shoulders of the defense. In the end, however, It all worked out. For Buchanon, it was a particularly trying day. The classy veteran comerback was suckered by the Dolphins on a flea-flicker, fumbled away an Interception and was burned for a big gainer from Don Strock to Jimmy Cefalo in the overtime. P18575R13 Throughout San Diego, bar business was up as overjoyed fans turned out to celebrate one of the citys finest moments. Pontiac (Mich.) here we come, a celebrant screamed above the glorious din at TGI Fridays, a busy nightspot near Hotel Circle in Mission Valley. A wedding reception for Phillip Folse and Susan Griffin came to a standstill as guests surrounded a small television set to view the wild finish. I told him I wasnt going to have the reception unless there was a TV there to watch the game, said the bride. Two death threats were called into a San Diego television station during the game.

One was directed to the switchboard operator at Channel 39 after the Chargers blew a 24-0 lead and another caller, angry when a power outage blacked out several sections of the city, threatened to shoot the president of San Diego Gas Electric, a station employee said. The power outage forced one Charger fan into a quick new game plan. Cloyd McConnaughey of suburban Kensington and his family watched the game outside ignoring wind and a cold rain after hooking up his TV to a car battery. A spokesperson at Grossmont Hospital reported two women were injured in separate accidents related to post-game celebrations. One suffered a dislocated shoulder while cheering and another dislocated a finger during the excitement, the spokesman said.

better Giants That is just the innate insecurity of the professional athlete. Why shouldnt he be part of it. He set kicking records this year. At one stage, he kicked 13 straight field goals. No Giants had ever done that; not Pat Summerall, not Pete Gogolak.

Nobody. Most of the Giants took it with class. Some lost a little harder than others. Gary Jeter, near the end, threw a punch at Dan Audick, San Franciscos left tackle. I was being held, said Jeter when asked about the provocation.

Audick holds all the time. Audicks version: I was just blocking as long as I could under the rules. I guess he thought it was too long. Blocking or holding, the referee saw only the punch that Jeter started toward Audick. It cost 15 precious yards at a very vulnerable time, moving the 49ers to the Giants 26.

Shortly thereafter, Bill Ring went in with the TD that blew it apart, 31-17. Those are just details. Basically, the Giants lost because the 49ers were able to negate Lawrence Taylor on defense and Rob Carpenter on offense. They were the stickouts of the Giants push to the playoffs this time. They were the men George Young singled out at the end of the regular season.

They are the leaders on the field, said the general manager. Bill Walsh, brainy builder of this 49er team, choked off Taylors blitzing rushes by having the left guard, John Ayers, pull out and head him off short of the quarterback. Taylor made one sack, when it no longer mattered. As for taking care of Carpenter, held to 61 yards in 17 carries, the 49er coach said: We used a four-man line a little more than we usually do. "They were aggressive, was Carpenters explanation.

Maybe he was responsible for that extra adrenalin in the 49er tacklers. "You read things like Carpenter saying that man-for-man the Giants are a better team than we are, and it does something. We noticed it, said Randy Cross, who plays on the offensive line but knows how the defense was talking. We notice such things. We go out of our way not to say things like that, he said.

Lawrence Taylor was so distressed with his performance, he glared at newsmen and said, No comment. And do you know what I said to the all-pro linebacker? The last game the Giants played in 1980, they were so bad the Oakland players were rolling on the ground at the end, laughing. On the last game the Giants played in 1981, they actually played it in 1982.

And nobody was laughing at them Sunday. There was nothing but high praise and pride. Youve come a long way, Baby. "Were disappointed, but we have proved a lot to ourselves, and to everybody throughout the country, said Scott Brunner. We proved we could play football with anybody.

He had quarterbacked them to within one catch of a tie late in the third quarter. The final score was San Francisco 38, Giants 24, but it was considerably closer than that. When it was 24-17, the Giants put on a drive that reached a third and three situation on the 49er four. Brunner flipped over the middle to Earnest Gray, who had a step on Eric Wright. As Gray grabbed the ball, Wright grabbed Gray.

Wright held on; Gray didnt. It was a tough catch, said Brunner. It would have been a great catch because Wright got there right with the ball. Now it was fourth down, and rather than come up empty on the drive, Coach Ray Perkins sent in Joe Danelo to salvage three points. The troubled field goal kicker had set records during a brilliant season, only to go sour near the end.

Danelo, like the Giants, had a year to be proud of. He had been having directional troubles of late, however. In a recent game he had hit the right upright. This time, he didnt hit the right upright. He hit the left upright.

The Giants came up empty on the drive, and were done. The field goal didnt really matter, said Brunner. The touchdown was the key thing. If we got that, the pressure would have been on San Francisco. If we had made the field goal, the game would have been basically the same.

He meant that the TD, had Gray held the ball, would have tied the score at 24-24. The field goal, had Danelo made it, would have left the Giants still four points short. "I need to check with my coach and see where Im making mistakes, said Danelo. He meant for next year. This year is done with.

"Im really disappointed with the way things turned out today. The Giants will be tough next year. I just hope Im part of it. This is the playoffs and I feel were a team of destiny. Ive felt that for a long time. I was hurting, but I kept going. Winslow had more of a motivating factor that just the outcome of the game. He was being taunted the entire game by Kozlowski of the Dolphins a graduate of San Dieguito High School, MlraCosta Junior College and the University of Colorado.

I was hurting, but I had two things working for me, Winslow said. I know that the season is almost over and I have six months to heal from Injuries. The other thing Is the way Kozlowski was talking to me. He kept taunting me, trying to Intimidate me. He wouldnt keep quiet.

But it was OK because his talking kept me going." After the game, Kozlowski wanted it known that his taunting of Winslow was not malicious, but just part of the game. We know Winslow is tremendously talented, Kozlowski said. What we were trying to do by talking to him was to upset him. We wanted him to get flustered and angry and perhaps make a mistake. But he didnt.

He was great. I hit him with everything I had every time and Im sure hes hurting. I know I am. I hate the guy for knocking us out of the playoffs, but I respect the guy for the effort he gave. Other teams and other players would have folded up shop and gone home after we got ahead (38-31).

Winslow didnt and neither did the Chargers. You have to respect them for that. Saturdays effort by Winslow and the Chargers wont soon be forgotten. Its an effort that might finally get the lack-of-character stigma off the teams back. CALL FOR APPOINTMENT FRONT END ALIGNMENT 1795 Most American 4 Foreign Care.
