A reporter of The Chkokiclk yesterday visited the scene of the fire on North street in which H. Horton was burned out of business. The rush of matter occasioned by the President's message prevented a lengthy notice in the last issue. Mr. Horton was found at the gutted building surveying the remains of what was a profitable business before the destructive hands of the incendiary applied the torch.

In answer to questions Mr. Horton said I am satisfied the fire was of incendiary origin. When' the first alarm was given the department responded and the rear door was found open and I am positive I closed and locked it before lear ing. I remained in the building after the fames were extinguished assuring myself that there was not another spark. I left after midnight, giving my key to the watchman in the railway yards.

Forty minutes after I left the general alarm was given and this time the fire fiend had used oil to make a good job of it 'Friday night while I was at work on my books at the store the rear window was broken open by some one, but he was frightened by hearing me within and escaped. I was burned out three months ago on North Salisbury street and I am now certain that was done by a fire bug. I am afraid that if I reopen that my enemy will again destroy me." Mr. Horton carried an insurance of $375 in the Niagara of New York and $375 in the Western of Toronto, Canada. He estimates his loss at $400 over the inrarance.

The building, the property of R. H. Womble, was insured for $1,000. The perpetrator of the crime should be severely handled if he is apprehended. The location is at the railway yards, adjoining the car shed and paint shop and had a light wind been blowing untold loss would have resulted.

Owing to so short a notice, there was not as large a crowd as might have been desired at the humorous entertainment by Prof. Reed, at the Agricultural and Mechanical college, last night.

A num ber of Raleigh ladies were present. Prof. Reed read short humorous, pathetic and comic selections. At times he had the audience in a roar of laughter, then, again with solemn faces. He is a natural elocutionist, and the boys hope to have him give them lessons early in the winter term of the collegiate year.

On Hand. Friday evening next will be an event of unusual interest ia the theatrical line in this city. Manager Heart has secured for the enjoyment of the people the John Thompson company, who, for rendition of original comedy is unexcelled by any troupe now on the road. It has visited this city before, about two years since, and was received with the utmost delight. On Hand, or the Comic Side of Life," is what may be termed one of the roaring comedies of the day, and is full of fun, singing, dancing, music, comedy, farce and laughter.

It can be truly placed as the foremost performance that has visited Raleigh this season. 0 From a Business Standpoint. As to the moral side of the Keeley cure for drunkenness and the opium habit there can be no discussion. Let's look at it from a business standpoint. A graduate of the institute at Greensboro writes: "It is now twelve months since I was cured.

For twenty years before my cure I never made a dollar. During the past year I have made a support and have four hundred dollars by me besides." Apply this to every day life, 8ay that there are 10,000 men addicted to drink in North Carolina men who are unfitted for business consumers, not producers. Let them take advantage of the Keeley cure and a simple calculation win ahow that $4,000,000 has been added to the wealth of the state where not a penny was made before. Do you know of any investment, besides the great good it does, and the happiness it brings, that pays so well as the small sum paid to the institute at Greensboro for the treatment of drunkenness? MATRIMONIAL. A Weddlnc To-night and One In the Future At 8 o'clock this evening at the First Baptist church.
