People who walk blithely under ladders, who stride fearlessly past black cats and who spill salt nonchalantly every other day of the year, should be eating ham and black-eyed peas for luck on New Year's Day. On New Year's Day, better safe than sorry.

After all, a wrong move on New Year's can cost you a year of misfortune. And if 1986 was a particularly unfortunate year for you, now is the time to turn things around. You can guarantee good luck for 1987 by observing the superstitious etiquette of this special day. In times past, noisemakers, horns and bells were used at midnight to frighten away evil spirits. Windows were opened to let the bad luck out and the good luck in.

It's also good luck at midnight to toss out the day's household wash water, a way of cleansing your home of evil spirits. During New Year's Eve festivities, it's good luck to be the last to drink from a bottle and bad luck to etiquette of this special dy. During New Year's Eve festivi- ties, it's good luck to be the last to drink from a bottle and bad luck to let the fire go out. Be warned that if there is no money in your pockets on New Year's Day, you'll be poor all year long. And nothing should be removed from your house during the first day of the year, otherwise your good luck will be taken with it, according to publications on correct superstitious behavior. It is unlucky to give a gift on New Year's Day, because you'll give your own luck away with it. And whatever activity you choose for the first day of the year is something you'll find yourself doing frequently for the rest of it.

So be careful. Get somebody to kiss you as a way of ensuring that you'll be kissed often during the year. Babies born Jan. I have lucky lives, so plan to give birth accordingly. January, however, is about the worst month in which to get married.

"Married in January's hoar and rime, widowed you'll be before your time," goes the admonition. Be wary of the first person to cross your threshold in the new year. The wrong person can bring bad luck, the right person, good luck. A widower brings bad luck, a Babies born Jan. I have lucky lives, so plan to give birth accord- ingly.

Be wary of the first person to cross your threshold in the new year. The wrong person can bring bad luck, the right person, good luck. A widower brings bad luck, a redhead brings the worst luck.

For the best of luck, hire a swarthy man to show up with a gift of food. Several of the merrier customs of this particular holiday actually derive from old, forgotten superstitions. For instance, the custom of clinking glasses together during holiday toasting originated with the belief that evil lurking in the liquid, waiting to enter the body, would be scared away by the noise. Ancient Anglo-Saxons spent New Year's Eve drinking ceremonial toasts to each other's health. Ancient Romans offered New Year's resolutions of good conduct to appease the god Janus, a two-faced deity who could look forward and backward simultaneously and for whom January is named.

By the way, the belief that to knock wood will bring luck is descended from the Druids, who thought spirits lived in trees. To gain the protection of the spirit, you simply had to knock on its tree. If you're really serious about superstition, hope for bad weather for the whole month. According to the old Welsh proverb, "a mild January means bad luck for both man and beast." Folks in mild climates could all be in a heap of trouble. By the that to knock wood will bring luck is de- scended from the Druids, who thought spirits lived in trees.

El 110f1 year's worth of disorganized record-keeping with 24 hours of frenzied activity on April 14 the day before the tax return is due. But being prepared for tax day is a yearlong process, one which begins in January.

Here are some simple tips to help you get ahead of the game: Use your checkbook to remind you of important tax-related items. Pay all deductible items by check, which will become a record of your expenditure. Highlight these payments in your checkbook with a colored pen on the word "Tax." Save all your receipts for deductibles in a Household Affairs file. Use your day-to-day calendar to record non-reimbursed business expenses such as business-related transportation and meals, which may be tax-deductible. Write down, in detail, who you saw, and when, where and why you saw them.

Learn tax-saving techniques from articles in newspapers and magazines. If you don't have the time to read the articles, tear them out. Put them in a "To Read" file that you carry with you. Catch up on your reading while riding the bus or waiting in line. If you plan to use a tax preparer, consult with him or her early in the year to assess any changes in your tax situation.

Ask the preparer what documents you may need. Inquire about what you can do now to save taxes next year. It also is important to keep your tax-related documents for seven years. Once you have completed your tax return filing, gather up your Household file for the year, Canceled Checks file, work sheets and a copy of your tax forms. Store them in a box clearly marked "Taxes and Receipts, 1987." As you can see, getting organized is a process that begins in small steps.

But together, these steps help you to find what you need when you need it. In the end, you'll find that you'll have more free time to enjoy yourself, which is really what getting organized is all about. There is nothing fun or efficient about having to plow through a pile of letters, bills and assorted junk mail to find that one receipt you need. It wastes time and hinders efforts to arrange your affairs. Here's a simple way to straighten out your household paperwork to save time, and even money, in the coming year.

First, buy two inexpensive expanding files at the dime store: one is called a Household Affairs folder and the other, a Canceled Checks folder. Mark the front of each with the year 1987. Let's begin with the Household Affairs folder. It already has such pre-marked categories as "Automobile," "Income Taxes" and "Unpaid Bills. Create new categories if necessary by re-labeling unnecessary files.

Each time a bill comes in or you charge an item, put the receipt or statement in the section marked "Unpaid Bills." When your monthly statement arrives, compare'it with your receipts to make sure it is accurate. Mark the due-date on the payment envelope in the box where the stamp goes. File it chronologically. Each week check the amount paid, the check number and the date mailed. Staple the receipts and statement together and file under the appropriate category, e.g., credit cards, doctor bills, etc.

Your Canceled Check file works the same way. It comes with separate dividers for each month of the year. File your deposit and with, drawal receipts according to month and use them to verify the bank statement. When your monthly bank statement comes in, balance your account. You may want to flag checks that are important at tax times, such as charitable deductions or mortgage payments.

Then put your checks in numerical order and file under the appropriate month. With this system, you'll always know where your important bank documents are.
