Despite an outpouring of volunteer help, no trace of the missing couple has been found, Pierce County sheriff's Lt. Jeff Edmunds said Monday.

In a newspaper article published last week, the elder Reimer called for help in the search. About 30 volunteers responded Saturday in a fruitless check of heavily wooded areas near Fort Lewis and the Tulie Lake area. Michael Riemer, 36, and Robertson were last seen in the younger Riemer's red pickup truck as they left to check animal traps along the Nisqually River the morning of Dec. 11. A few days later, two women found Robertson's 2-year-old daughter, wandering around the K-Mart store parking lot in Spanaway.

"The child is fine. She was in good shape, but she's too young to talk. All she wants to do is play," the elder Riemer said. It's possible someone murdered the couple and took compassion on the child, detectives say. The elder Riemer also fears the two may be dead.

Authorities have not mounted their own search because of the vast area that would have to be covered. The younger Riemer worked for a Seattle roofing company and trapped mink, coyote, muskrat and bobcats in hundreds of places to supplement his income in the winter. Associated Press PORT ANdELES, Wash. Timber industry officials are wondering what can be done with millions of board feet of logs coated with the gooey crude oil spilled in the Port Angeles harbor. Spokeswoman Wendy Pugnetti of ITT Rayonier said the part of the harbor used for log storage has been closed, backing up logging operations in the forest. Rayonier owns as about 8 million board feet of logs in the harbor. An estimated 189,000 gallons of Alaskan heavy crude oil leaked out of the Atlantic Richfield tanker ARCO Anchorage when it ran aground Dec.

21. Now officials are trying to figure out what to do with the logs. "We've never had an accident like this before and nobody knows what the logs can be used for," said Bob Levine, Arco marine cleanup manager. Levine said he doesn't even know if the logs can be cleaned. It may be possible simply to strip off the bark of logs coated with a light sheen, he said, but for logs that have absorbed the oil, no amount of cleaning may help.

If the intended buyers of the logs refuse to accept the logs after cleanup attempts are made, Rayonier may face even more problems, Pugnetti said.
