0 IC a 1 all ffs i I mast 0 I THE DISTRICT THREE FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS will bring together the top teams from a 10-county area in southcentral Pennsylvania. The counties are Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Berks, Dauphin, Cumberland, Adams, Perry, Juniata and Franklin. The District Three area is shown on the shaded portion of the map of Pennsylvania. There are 93 schools which play football In the District. Lancaster Catholic and Conestoga Valley are two Catholic is regarded as a Double A school for- the playoffs because it has only 344 male students, (Double A is 398 to 252 students). However, Catholic plays most of its games in Section One of the Lan- League composed of Triple A schools. Thus, if Catholic wins most of its games the Crusaders will rack up a number of "extra" points for defeating Triple A schools. However, if the Crusaders should lose several games because of the tough Triple A competition, all losses will count against them. Thus their playoff aspirations are "hurt" by playing Triple A competition.

On the other hand, Conestoga Valley is regarded as a Triple A school for the playoffs because it 4 has 402 male (Triple A are those schools with 400 to 1,281 1, male students). However, CV competes in Section Two of the L-L League against mostly Double A opponents. There- fore, CV could breeze through Sec- tion Two, but perhaps drop a game or two againt Triple A teams in early season non-league games (they lost to Manheim and this would hurt their chances of picking up enough points for the playoffs. The number of points (touch-2 downs) scored by a team will not be considered the rankings. Thus, if Manheim Twp.

beats Man- fielm Central 34-7 and CV were to beat Central 14-7 this would not make any difference in the points a team receives for defeating another opponent. No matter what the score, a team will receive only four points for a victory. The point sys- tern was designed this way so' teams would not roll up the score to gain extra rating points. 't Twelve teamsfour in each' classfrom the 10-county District Three area will qualify for the playoffs. The final rankings will appear the second weekend in No- vember.

The playoffs will be held on the third and fourth weekends in November. The Sunday News will update the ratings of local teams throughout the season. It's still early, but not too early, to start thinking about the District Three football playoffs. Six Lancaster-Lebanon League teams are in the early running for playoff spots. They are Manheim Township, Conestoga Valley and Hemi)field in Triple Lancaster Catholic and Solana) in Double and Lebanon Catholic in A.

Point totals will determine the playoff teams. A team receives playoff points for the following: 4 points for a win. 2 points for tie. 3 points for defeating a Triple A opponent. i 2 points for defeating a Double A opponent.

1 point for defeating a Class A opponent. Points will be given for nine games. This is done because some schools play 9, some play 10 and some play 11 games. Thus, to equalize the schedules, the "top" nine games will be counted. First, all losses and ties will count.

Then the victories against the highest rated opponents will be counted. Games against teams in District 'Mee will be counted before games against teams outside the District can be counted. IN TRIPLE Manheim Township has 19 points. Conestoga Valley has 13. Hempfield has 11.

(Saturday's games are not Here's bow the point system works: Manheim Township compiled its 19 points by defeating Big Spring (4 points for a win, 2 points for defeating a Double A school), by defeating Manheim Central (4 for a win, 2 for defeating a Double A school), and by defeating Conestoga Valley (4 for a win, 3 for defeating a Triple A school). Conestoga Valley got its 13 points by defeating Lancaster Catholic (4 for a win, 2 for defeating a Double A school) and McCaskey (4 for a win, 3 for defeating a Tnple A school. Hempfield got its 11 points by defeating Columbia (4 for a win, 1 fop defeating a Class A school) and Spring Grove (4 for a win, 2 for I I I L. (1 I 11' 4.1A.,--'e,s.,,t, ke I 1 I I 41 11 I I ia I say: "Where it is necessary to use learns outside of District Three a class determination will be made by the District Three Committee." That determination will be made later. IN DOUBLE Lancaster Cathol- ic has 13 points and Solanco has 12.

Catholic defeated Warwick, a Double A school (6 points) and Penn Manor, a Triple A school (7 points). The Crusaders lost to Conestoga Valley, however, and this loss will eventually count against them (by eliminating a win). Solanco defeated Garden Spot and Lampeter-Strasburg, Double A schools (6 points for each win) IN CLASS Lebanon Catholic has 10 points 'with wins over two Class schools, Columbia and Kishacpquillas (5 points for each). The victory over Kishacoquillas may count in the final ratings cause Lebanon Catholic plays only eight District Three teams, thus an -outside" game will be counted. SOME TEAMS ARE IN A unique situation because they are rated in defeating a Double A school).

THE POINT TOTALS ARE subject to change because each time a team loses a game (no points for a loss) this will detract from its total points (by eliminating a win in the final nine game total) For example: Conestoga Valley has 13 points with victories over Lancaster Catholic and McCaskey. But when the nine "top" games are finally figured, CV will "lose" points because it lost to Manheim Township. This loss, even though it was a non-league game, must be counted among CV's moe "top" games. Wilson is another example. Wilson has has 11 points with wins over Exeter, a Double A school (6 points), and William Allen, Triple A school (7 points).

The Bulldogs lost to Pottsville, a Triple A school. Wilson plays only eight games against District Three teams. Therefore, one of Wilson's "outside" games (against Pottsville, Allentown Allen or Pennsbury) must be counted. Which game will be counted?
