A. Sept. 16, 1977 THE SUN-TELEGRAM 17 RiffiansSpartansAztecs -A- and a team sans a league i return at quarterback to lead Hubauer's power-I offense. He has eight returning starters on both offense and defense. All three newcomers on offense will be in the line.

"We've got some experienced football players," he said. "We do have some problems at offensive line. But defensively we'll be pretty tough." The defense will be anchored by seniors Paul Willis. Harold Henderson and Paul Nelson. The Aztecs will have good depth at most positions.

Hubauers said he had to cut 28 seniors from this year's team, some of whom were returning lettermen. No sophomores are scheduled to start tonight and only six juniors will open. Barstow's first four games could prove crucial for the Aztecs. Barstow is the CIF's "limbo" team, and although ostensibly a member of the new Sunkist League, they will not be eligible for the team championship. They're too big.

And they'll be playing a free lance schedule. A jl Barstow High School's new mascot Burroughs' youth a stumbling block BARSTOW There's been something strange going on at the Barstow High School practice field. Instead of the red and white clad Riffians, there's been a group they're calling Aztecs running around in cardinal and gold uniforms. Across town at Kennedy High School, the practice field is deserted of the Spartans that last advanced to the CIF quarterfinals. Indeed, the Riffians and Spartans are gone.

And so is Kennedy High School. Early this year, Kennedy High School was closed in the name of economics and its students consolidated with Barstow on the latter's campus. Skeptics say you'd have a better chance of getting Israel and the United Arab Republic to join in a holy war than to get Kennedy and Barstow athletes to become one happy football team. But Charles Hubauer, the Barstow High School Aztec football coach, said the transformation has been a smooth one. "We haven't had any problems," Hubauer said.

"I thought there might be at first. There was such a bitter rivalry. But there hasn't been any friction." With fears of intersquad tension eliminated, Hubauer has set out to mold a inner. He has 16 returning starters to begin with. "Everything has got to be team this year," Hubauer said.

"There no other way we can do it. We don't have the personnel. We don't have the super jocks." Last season hen he as the Kennedy coach, Hubauer said he had a slightly different approach. He also had All-CIF running back Larry Jones. "We just gave the ball to Jones and said, There's the goal line.

Do your he said. Despite losing starting fullback Joe Reeves with a torn hamstring in last week's scrimmage with Quartz Hill, Hubauer said the Aztecs ill be strong at running tack. "We have running backs," he said. "We just don't have the 9.5 sprinter. It'll be more of the five-yards and a cloud of dust." Hubauer said Johnathan Saddler, Gary Jackson and Lamar Fite will see most of the action at the running back spots in tonight's opener here aganist Cajon.

Ron Ribera, who started for Barstow last season, will Burroughs High School football is in a scramble at present. And coach Bruce Bernhardt only hope is that his team will put the puzzle pieces together before its too late. Golden Burroughs is short on experience and long on a list of underclassmen. "The team is almost all juniors," said Bernhardt "I'm afraid 1 can't predict what is going to happen to Hi TJ h.Jf us at this point. When ou're working with inexperience, there are a lot of variables." Thirteen senior lettermen return to action.

However, only five were starters last season and Bernhardi has to fill a lot of holes. Senior David Furstenburg (W), 165) ill start at quarterback. "David played a little for us last year but not enough to account for a year of experience, said the coach. "We've switched Brian Bergh from fullback to tailback and we'll be depending on his experience to handle the 1-formation offense." Seasoned offensive guard Blaine Fobison and tackle Jay Kovar are in charge of the front line. "We're an awfully young team," said Bernhardi.

"If we get through the season without getting hurt that's a plus."
