TIMES 'AD OCATE 75 was vintage drafting year Kosc (ils 5 hits to fiiovo in on record By Associated Press Pete Rose hit three home runs and a pair of singles Saturday, moving to within four of the 3000-hit mark for his career, as the Cincinnati Reds blasted five New York pitchers for six homers and 20 hits in handing the Mets their sixth straight loss 14-7 Rose, who extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games and is attempting to become the 13th major leaguer to reach 3000 hits, then homered to give the Reds a 9-6 lead. They were the first home runs of the season for Rose, who also connected in the eighth inning, and it was his first threehomer day in 16 years in the majors. After the game Reds Manager Sparky Anderson said he would not allow Rose to reach the mark on Sunday at N'ew York. This meeting was more secret than most.

Guards were outside the doors. Thee members of the press who ordinarily covered the activities of the business were present as guests of the company. There was a question which went unanswered, however. Why were the San Diego Chargers meeting in Palo Alto, of all places, to be party to the annual National Football League draft? The reasons still are a bit sketchy. But the results were so beneficial that one has to wish the same motel would be used Tuesday when the lottery is held for the 1978 college football seniors.

Instead, the Chargers will be back in their old draft central of San Diego Stadium They'll be working behind closed doors as is always the case. But the crop just won't be the same as that of 1975. That was a bumper year. Bottle '75 and save it for 30 years. A magnum would bring incredible prices.

Eight starters on last year's Charger squad came from the Palo Alto draft. That was the time when Harland Svare. in his role as general manager, argued at great length against the coach Tommy Prothro desired selection of a defensive tackle from Southern Methodist Svare asserted that it was his strong conviction that Louie Kelcher lacked the talent and ability to play in the NFL. That's the same Louie Kelcher, in case you were the Arctic last fall, who made All-Pro. His teammates from that draft all of whom distinguished themselves as they matured with a team that was 2-12 in their rookie year and improved to 7-7 in 1978 include defensive tackle Gary Johnson, cornerback Mike Williams, defensive end Fred Dean, safety Mike Fuller, offensive tackle Billy Shields, runningback Rickey Young and center Ralph Perretta.

The NFL doesn't keep statistics on such matters in an easily discovered form, but that's about as many starters out of one draft as any recent team has had. Especially as the eight move into their fifth season as starters, the unit has become one of the premier NFL drafts. The first night in Palo Alto, Prothro invited a couple of reporters to sup with him and he Runners wake up bit sore ESCONDIDIO What a day to lose an hour's sleep. These legs had participated in the Palomar Family YMCA's "Everybody Runs for Fun program Saturday.

There were enough races for everyone to have a supermarket basketful of choices of what to do except sit. The overall winner of the halfmarathon for men was Brad Roy of Carlsbad who covered the 13 miles in 70 52. The quickest woman In the same race was Ellen Turkel of San Diego, who ran 90:16. Other winners were Norma Miller, Carol Guess, Kathy Keller, Kathleen Woods, Laura Dodge. He'd had a couple of successful drafts with the Rams, but this one topped anything he'd done before Prothro knew that night that if things worked out within a reasonable mathematical certainty, he'd found the nucleus of a team. Through Perretta. there were 13 picks made that first day. Eight still are with the Chargers.

The other five aren't even in pro football any longer They were the sixth through ninth picks, linebacker Ken Bernich, defensive tackle Kevin Nosbusch, tight end Charles Waddell a wide receiver from Oklahoma, John Car-roll. and offensive tackle Barry Collier. When the draft commences Tuesday morning at 7 a Prothro will be looking first, contrary to many reports, for a speedy wide receiver. One should assume the names which interest him most are Stanford's James Lofton, Florida's Wes Chandler and Arizona State's John Jefferson. San Diego State's Ron Smith, a quite versatile performer, ranks just behind that trio, but probably won't be considered by the Chargers as a first-round type.

Prothro may also be moving away from a middle linebacker choice and closer to an offensive lineman who could play either guard or tackle. If all the speedy pass catchers are gone, he might be tempted to expend the first of 13 picks on a lineman But it'll be some kind of year, to be Cosellian, if the '78 draft begins to match the great selections of 1975 i 7 "'4 grinned at the assembled newsmen I'll tell tou what I'll do For $50. you pick any man you want as the winner, and I'll bet against him "I pick you." a local reporter said "You've got a $50 bet." said Player "And if I show up tomorrow afternoon a loser, you'd better be here with $50 in your hand Player, of course, would be delighted to lose the bet In other national tournaments Sam Snead and his partner.
