'-A It over Chargers victorious si Nastase captures Masters Conduct, play sharp in victory over Borg STOCKHOLM, Sweden (UPI) Ilie Nastase swapped his villains hat for the victors laurels Sunday by defeating Bjorn Borg of Sweden, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, to win the $130,000 Masters Tennis tournament for the fourth time in six years. Disqualified for bad conduct in his first match, and roundly criticized by the Swedish press, Nastase fought back by producing the best tennis he had played since 1973 when he won 48 of 49 matches to be ranked the worlds No. 1. The 140,000 victory came at the end of a bleak year in which the 29-year-old Romanian failed to win a major tournament and had been fined and disqualified for a series of incidents which stoked up his reputation as the bad guy of tennis. Nastases repertoire of strokes, unmatched by any of his rivals, was on full display Saturday when he upset defending champion Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4, to set up the final with Borg.

It provided the years last major tournament with an anticlimax Borg had a nightmare match, his confidence shattered time and again by Nastases superb passing shots and topspin lobs, and the 19-year-old Swede never was able to find a rhythm. I have never concentrated so hard in my life, said Nastase. I could even hear people breathing in the back rows. His volcanic temperament smouldered but never erupted and he never let himself lose his concentration. I was confident even when I started to play.

It was as though I was already two sets up. I took a lot of chances, he said. Borg, who picked up the losers check of $20,000, was so demoralized by the third set that he won just seven points in one five-game spell. At the end I was happy just to get the ball back into court, he said. Associated Press Photos SWEET VICTORY Charger quarterback Dan Fouts couldn't resist spiking the ball in the end zone Sunday after scoring the final touchdown in a 28-20 victory over Kansas City.

Fouts missed two weeks because of an injury, but returned to action Sunday to lead the Chargers to their first triumph of the season. LENNY LASSOED Kansas City quarterback Lenny Dawson fumbled as he was hit by Charger rookie defensive tackle Gary Johnson in the fourfh quarter of Sunday's game. The play possibly could have been the last for Dawson, 40, in his 18-year career. The veteran suffered a broken thumb, left the game and did not return. CA Saints fall, 14-7 San Diego beats KC. mils No.l KANSAS CITY (AP) For the truggling San Diego Chargers and outhful Rickey Young, it was a beginning For veteran Kansas City quarter-jackXen Dawson, it may have been the 'J Ive been waiting for this interview ill year, said Chargers Coach Tommy Protho Sunday after his squad, spurred by Youngs 124 yards rushing, scratched out 328-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The win was San Diegos first of the waning National Football League season and snapped an 11-game losing streak. Next' to winning, the best thing I know for a football team is not to quit, said jthe beaming Prothro. Thats what our team did today and all year.

I told the team I was proud of them for that. Fitr Dawson, an 18-year career in professional football may have come to an end near the Kansas City 25-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Thats when he cracked a bone in his right thumb white being sacked in a Charger rush. Chiefs officials indicated Dawson was unable to grip a football and said he appeared doubtful for the teams remaining two games. There has been growing speculation thismay be the 40-year-old quarterbacks last season in professional football, but he refused to confirm or deny such reports, Its not a very glamorous finish if I do decide to go out, is it? Dawson asked with 3 rueful grin.

A' few early moments, it appeared gDawson, starting in place of injured regular Mike Livingston, was going to Jdissect the Chargers in a manner reminiscent of the past. San Diego recovered the fumbled opening kickoff at the Chiefs 27 and Young punched it in three plays later from the five. But Kansas Citys Willie Lanier picked off a Dan Fouts pass and Jan Stenerud made it 7-3 with a 21-yard field goal moments later. Dawson nibbled away at the Chargers throughout the first half, at one point connecting on 10 straight passes. Steneruds 22-yard field goal in the se- cond quarter made it 7-6 at the half.

Kansas City turned two more interceptions into points in the third period after San Diegos Sam Scarber capped the first drive of the quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run. Emmitt Thomas returned an interception to the Charger 16 midway through the period and Woody Green hurdled into the end zone from the one three plays later to make it 14-13. Dawson followed an interception by Mike Sensibaugh with a 17-yard scoring pass to Barry Pearson. But the Chargers roared back, scoring on a three-yard dive by Young, then an ad-libbed nine-yard scramble by Fouts. Young, a rookie who celebrated his 22nd birthday Sunday, carried the ball on half of San Diegos 50 tries on the ground, despite a sprained ankle and bruised ribs.

We had a pretty even game plan between running and passing, he said. The plays I ran were pretty efficient at the time, so we just decided to stick withthem. Kansas' City Coach Paul Wiggin, whose injury-riddled squads record sank to 5-7, took the loss philosophically. I dont think theyre a horrible football team, he said of the Chargers. I think theyre a team thats tried hard to get polling and, like Cleveland, may be starting to put things together.

werent thinking about losing, said Fouts. We knew we could move the ball. Rickey ran well and Sam Scarber and Tony Baker and Glen Bonner. Today, all three aspects of our team: played well the offense, the defense and the special teams. (Summary, Page A-10) Harts By Associated Press For Jim Hart, the mental part of getting ready for the Dallas Cowboys was simple.

And Hart, a pro quarterback in his 10th Reason, made the physical part of his assignment look equally easy while directing the St. Louis Cardinals to a 31-17 National Football League triumph Sunday. "I was talking to my wife over breakfast during the week, recalled Hart, an errant passer 10 days earlier with four interceptions in a 32-14 Cards loss to the Buffalo Bills. "I told her my feeling psychologically about this game was that it couldnt get any worse than Thanksgiving bay, said Hart, who redeemed himself with three touchdown passes Peterson Rams slow but sure MON DEC. 8.

1 975 A-9 Rams defensive end Jack Youngblood got two points in the first half by dropping New Orleans quarterback Archie Manning in the Saints end zone for a safety. Kicker Tom Dempsey who missed the point after Petersons touchdown because of a bad snap from center booted second-half field goals of 47 and 37 yards to provide the only points scored by the Rams offense. Between Dempseys field goals, Manning hit running back Rod McNeill on a five-ard touchdown pass. The Rams, 10-2, have already clinched a playoff berth, but the home field advantage goes to the team with the best record. We werent looking past anyone, said Los Angeles Coach Chuck Knox.

"Were happy to come down here, get a win and get out of town. For the 2-7 Saints, it was a new way to lose a football game. The coverage of that punt was excellent, said Ernie Hefferle, interim coach. It looked like we had the ball in their territory, and they get a touchdown. That set us back real good.

(Summary, Page A-10) Lakers hot, cold in win over Bullets LOS ANGELES (AP) It was, as Laker coach Bill Sharman described it, some kind of a see-saw battle. First they were hot in the first quarter, then we were in the second. They were in the third, then it went back and forth in the fourth. When the dust cleared Sunday evening, the Lakers had pulled out a 114-106 victory over the Washington Bullets. It was, Sharman said, a game of streaks.

The most dramatic streak was a 27-1 Laker blitz which started late in the second quarter and continued into the third. At the time it started, they trailed the Bullets 48-37. But that Laker run wasnt enough to finish Washington. The Bullets roared back to tie the contest at 100 with four minutes remaining. But then it was Lakep streak time again, and two hook shots by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and long jumpers by Don Freeman and Gail Goodrich gave them a 108-102 lead the Bullets couldnt overcome.

Jabbar had 27 points to lead Los Angeles, Goodrich had 24, and Cazzie Russell added 18. Washingtons Elvin Hayes was the game's top scorer with 28, and Phil Chenier and Dave Bing added 25 and 24 points for the Bullets. Laker guard Lucius Allen, who had 14 points, left the game in the third quarter with a strained back, but said afterward that he didnt believe the injury was serious and that he probably wouldnt miss any games. (Summary, Page A-ll) Our future is next year but we might just do it a year ahead of time," said Colts General Manager Joe Thomas. And Coach Ted Marchibroda added: Maybe we were looking forward to Miami a little this week but I can promise you well be ready for the Dolphins next week.

Redskins 30, Falcons 27 Once again, Washington seemed headed for overtime when Atlantas Nick Mike-Mayer kicked a 44-yard field goal with 61 seconds to play, tying things at 27-27. But Billy Kilmer, who had thrown three touchdown passes earlier, marched Washington across the field and Mark Moseley booted a 39-yard field Cont. On Page A-10, Col. 2 DON STROCK I didnt get touched or knocked down all night, except when I ran, said Strock. The line knew they were going to have to do a little better blocking job and they did it.

Strock, surrounded by reporters for the first time in his obscure pro career, said, The last time I was asked so many questions was the first time my mother caught me drinking. The Bills rallied to cut the led to 24-21 early in the fourth quarter as O.J. Simpson scored on a 14-yard run and on a 62-yard pass play and J.D. Hill took a 31-yard touchdown pass from Joe Ferguson. A controversial dead ball call with Cont.

On Page A-10, Col. 1 MIAMI (AP) He was just a kid, they said. In his first two years as a reserve quarterback, a third-stringer, he hadnt thrown the ball even once. In this, his third year, hed thrown it only five times and that in a game that was already decided. How in the world, they wondered, would this lanky, raw kid take over as a starter and direct a team fighting for its life in the National Football League? He did it just fine, thank you.

Its not my nature to be nervous, Don Strock said after passing for two touchdowns and running for one to lead the Miami Dolphins to a 31-21 victory over the Buffalo Bills. I wasnt scared. I slept like a log last night, but I probably wont sleep tonight. Strock, a 6-foot-5, 200-pounder who had warmed Miamis bench since coming out of Virginia Tech as the nations collegiate passing champion in 1972, went from No. 3 to No.

1 in a hurry when Bob Griese and Earl Morrall were hobbled by injuries in successive weeks. If Coach Don Shula had any reservations about how his kid quarterback would do, he didnt give any evidence of it. He was on his own, play-calling, Shula said. All he needed was an opportunity and he showed that in a big way. He showed his stuff in a big hurry, too.

He hit 10 straight passes and staked the Dolphins to a 21-0 halftime lead on his TD run of five yards and scoring strikes of eight yards and one yard to Howard Twilley. In a pressure situation, he really responded, said Shula. A guy who has worked as long and hard as Strock deserves to have good things happen to him and it happened filled the air with passes in the closing periods but two were picked off by Roger Wehrli, who had also swiped a pass in the second quarter. Its impossible to give them too much credit, said Landry in saluting the Cards for a tremendous first half. "We knew we had to win, said Cards Coach Don Coryell.

We didnt do anything special, we just did it better. We hope we can make the playoffs. Thats the only thing were concerned about. In Sundays other games it was Baltimore 21, New York Giants Washington 30, Atlanta 27; Pittsburgh 31, Cleveland 17; Cincinnati 31, Philadelphia San Diego 28, Kansas City 20; Minnesota 24, Green Bay Los Angeles 14, New Orleans Houston 27, NEW ORLEANS (AP) Jim Peterson of the Los Angeles Rams says he would have bypassed the first touchdown of his professional career, if he could have found anyone to give it to. Peterson scored the Rams only touchdown in a 14-7 National Football League conquest of the New Orleans Saints Sunday.

I ran three and a half miles for that score, the 6-foot-5, 240-pound linebacker said after the game. Actually, it was 67 yards. For the last 20 yards, I felt like I had the whole world on my shoulders. I toyed with the idea of lateralling the ball, but I couldnt find anyone, he said. The reason he couldnt find anyone to toss the ball to was that most of the players on the field were still untangling themselves from the pileup that resulted when the Rams Jim Bertleson fumbled a punt return.

Peterson one of the few people not in the pile picked up the ball and chugged for his touchdown in the third quarter, making the score 8-0 in Los Angeles favor and giving the Rams all the points they needed to win. Petersons touchdown came after passes against the Cowboys. It was suggested to Hart that the victory by St. Louis, 9-3, lodged the Cards firmly in the drivers seat with two weeks left in the National Conference East. I guess we are, said Hart.

Were on top but Im having a tough time thinking about that situation. I dont even know what the possibilities are. All I know is I want Dallas to beat the (Washington) Redskins. Not surprisingly a subdued Coach Tom Landry of Dallas, whose team is now tied with Washington at 8-4 for second place, was also thinking ahead. Whoever wins that game wins the wild card berth, Landry said in reference to the Cowboys nexL assignment, Saturday at home against lead Cardinals over Cowboys the Redskins.

Even if wed won today, it wouldnt have done us any good unless we beat Washington." The postseason expectations of Landry and his team, although not demolished, were considerably diminished by what the Cards did in 30 minutes. Bolstered by Terry Metcalfs circus catch of a 30-yard touchdown pass, Hart sparked St. Louis to a 14-3 lead at the quarter and afterward upped the advantage to 28-3. Speedy Mel Gray beat Mel Renfro of the Cowboys for 49 yards and a touchdown late in the opening period, then victimized Charlie Waters for six yards and another score just before the half ended. Dallas quarterback Roger Staubach San Francisco 13; the New York Jets 30, New England 28; Chicago 25, Detroit 21, and Miami 31, Buffalo 21.

Tonight Denver is at Oakland. Colts 21, Giants 0 The record means a lot if we get into the playoffs, Lydell Mitchell said after rushing 119 yards to give himself 1,008 for the season and become the first Baltimore back ever to hit four figures. But individual efforts dont mean that much if we dont make it all the way. Mitchell scored the only TD the Colts needed to make the Giants their seventh straight victim with a nine-yard run. The Baltimore defense did its part by sacking Craig Morton eight times..
