I B-4 TIMES-ADVOCATE, ESCONDIDO. CA SUN NOV 9, 1975 1 I i Stadium quieter for Chargers, Pats i will see no further action. His backup, Billy Shields, also is slowed by an injury and Booker Brown, a guard by trade, will get the call. In filling Owens spot on the roster, the Chargers signed wide receiver Mel Baker Friday. A second-year man from Texas Southern, Baker played last year with Miami and has served in Nqw England and New Orleans this year.

Advance ticket sales have been zilch and a crowd of around 26,000 is expected. Playing second fiddle in town is a new experience for the Chargers. It may prove to be a lasting one. The two teams have shown similar offenses in that neither has displayed much. In the 13-team American Football Conference, the Chargers rank 13th, averaging just 205.3 yards per game.

The Patriots rank 11th at 271.1. The difference is in the defense. San Diego rates 12th in that category (only the New York Jets are worse), allowing an average of 370 yards per game, and New England ranks fifth at 271.1. The Chargers will be without veteran offensive tackle Terry Owens, not only for this game, but for all the rest also. Owens was put on the injured reserve list because of his back problems and By DAVE HOFF T-A Sports Editor SAN DIEGO San Diego Stadium, home of bedlam, high spirits, good times and a winning football team on Saturday nights, doffs its other hat this afternoon.

The Chargers are back in town. In the same arena where 53,000 football fanatics whooped and hollered during Saturday nights San Diego State-Arizona clash, a wake, by comparison, will take place today. If there are any cheers ringing throughout the stadium this afternoon, theyll likely be ones left over by San The Chargers enter todays affair at 0-7. If the Chargers are to avoid the embarrassment of an 0-14 season, today may be the best opportunity to do so. Although the Patriots are listed as four-point favorites, they haven't accomplished much more than San Diego.

New England has a 2-5 record and has lost all three of its outings on the road. In addition, the Patriots could be without quarterback Jim Plunkett, who is healing from a separated shoulder. Plunkett has been throwing in practice this week, but coach Chuck Fairbanks will not make a decision until gametime between Plunkett and Steve Grogan, a rookie from Kansas State. Diego State partisans. Neither of the participants in todays silent spot, the Chargers nor the New England Patriots, have performed feats deserving of cheers.

More like tears. Whatever the adversities, the two teams will match them, starting at 1 p.m. That is, of course, assuming Saturday's huge crowd has departed and the tailgate parties have run dry by that time. The explosion in popularity of San Diego State football this year has been paralled by the demise of interest in the Chargers. It doesnt take Ellery Queen to establish a motive the Aztecs went into Saturdays game with an 8-0 record.

Ramona held off by Mission Bay LA JOLLA Once again, Ramona High School came close to winning its first Coast League football game of the season Friday night, but lost, 21-12, to Mission Bay at the La Jolla High field. The Bulldogs entered the fourth quarter trailing by just 14-12, but couldn't push across another score, while the Buccaneers Dave Gholson scored on a one-yard run late in the game to seal Ramonas fate. The Bulldogs are now 0-6 in league play and 1-7 on the season. They close out against Coronado next week at home. Coronado is 0-6 and 0-8.

Were playing better, dam it, said Ramona coach Mike Cunningham, who was banished from the game in the first quarter when an official took offense to something he said. We played great on defense. After he left the field, Cunningham went up to the press box, from where he directed the team over the phones. The Bulldogs defense took away the Bucs ground game, limiting Mission Bay to just 57 yards in 33 carries. On offense, quarterback Ralph Sanchez completed 10 of 20 passes for 131 yards and both touchdowns.

36-6 romp recorded by Patriot JV Orange Glen High School came up with an offense Friday night and the result was a 36-6 junior varsity football win over Carlsbad. Dave Lawson and Rick Lanning each scored two touchdowns and Mike Jannssen added a 53-yard run to lead the Patriots. Lawson scored on runs of one yard and three yards and Lanning tallied with 27- and 15-yard runs. Ron Day ran over two conversions and Mark Skomal ran another to close out the scoring for Orange Glen. San Pasqual scored twice in the final period and the defense held Escondido scoreless as the Golden Eagles upset the Cougars, 12-0.

Cary Peet caught a 40-yard pass from Rick Hansen in the corner of the end zone and Jim Woods added a one-yard run for San Pasqual. Vista remained undefeated with a narrow 13-6 win over Fallbrook. In the only other Avocado League game, Oceanside whitewashed San Marcos, 30-0. Coast League action saw Poway drop Mt. Carmel, 13-6, as the Sundevils only score came on a 12-yard screen pass from Scott Merkley to Joey Dambrose.

Total statistics showed the teams to be fairly even, but San Pasqual could not manage anything that resembled a ground attack as the Eagles leading rusher, Cerroni, managed only 25 yards on nine carries. The Titans wrapped up the game on the first play of the second half. Positioned at wingback, Todd took a pitch from Paulson and then completed a pass to the speedy Beck for a 66-yard scoring play. Beck finished the game with three receptions for 133 yards and has to rank as one of the top game-breakers in the county. For the season, hes caught nine Tyler gained 145 yards rushing by himself. Well, we could have played better, but I'm not sure it would have made any difference, said Woodhouse.

I dont think I've ever seen a team put together a combination of physical ability, quickness and emotional involvement as Oceanside did in the first half of that ball game. But Ive never been so proud of my kids as I was. We went into the locker room at halftime and I was so proud, talking to them. We came out in the second half and those kids fought like anything. The score doesnt make a difference.
