A A-12 TIMES-ADVOCATE, ESCONDIDO. CA.TUES. NOV 30.1976 Yanks make Reggie richest free agent Kings ransom offer by Montreal turned down by Jackson J0 Arizona NEW YORK (AP) Reggie Jackson was officially welcomed to the New York Yankees Monday, accepting a five-year, $3 million contract as baseballs richest free agent. To get him, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner had to beat out the Montreal Expos, who had offered what had been described as a kings ransom to bring Jackson to Canada. In the end, it was Steinbrenners dynamic salesmanship and the lure of New York, the media capital of the world, that Jackson could not resist.

The reason I'm a Yankee is that George Steinbrenner just outhustled everybody else, said Jackson. The Yankees were sincere and beat everybody else to the punch. Jackson refused to confirm the financial aspects of his deal but he admitted that he could have signed with other teams for more money. Financial arrangements are very personal, the veteran slugger said. Its offensive to talk of things of that nature Thats no ones business but mine.

Pressed on the question, Jackson said other clubs offered more. Some clubs offered possibly seven figures more. One of those teams was known to be Montreal. We did everything we could, said John McHale, president of the Expos, who had made Jackson the No. 1 choice the historic Nov.

4 free-agent draft. It just came down to his own decision on where he wanted to play. He decided he wanted to play in the American League and with the New York Yankees. McHale said the Expos' money bid was what I understand to have been Steinbrenner and thats why Im a Yankee. Certain things mean a lot more than money.

Its easy to become rich when you're in my situation a free agent. Steinbrenner dealt with me as a person, man-to-man. I respect him for that. Jackson's agreement made him the most expensive instant millionaire created by the new free-agent arrangement. Until he signed, the richest free-agent agreements were reported to be the $2 million deals which Joe Rudi received from California and Don Gul-lett got from the Yankees 10 days ago.

the best offer. But there were other considerations which we as a club and we as individuals had no control over. Gary Walker, Jackson's agent, confirmed that the Yankees money bid was nowhere near the top dollar offered to his client. Four teams offered more than the Yankees, he said. Then why did Jackson come to New York? Perhaps to make a point.

Look, he said, money isnt going to get you everywhere you want to go. You have to consider the people youll be dealing with. I got good feelings from SAN DIEGO (AP) Freshman Percy Gilbert and senior Will Connelly each-' scored 21 points to lift San Diego State to an 89-65 college basketball victory over Northern Arizona Monday night. San Diego State got on the scoreboard early and built the advantage to 41-26 at 1 the half. The Lumberjacks mobilized in the final three minutes of the action to cut the San Diego lead to 70-60, but could come no closer to victory.

Guard Raymond Tsingine led the visitors with 17 points and Guy King added 14. Brian Frishman of San Diego State -led all rebcunders with 10 and had 12 points as both teams evened their season marks at 1-1. Gilbert, a 6-5 forward from San Diego' High, is perhaps a sign of San Diego States improving basketball fortunes and he hit 10 of 15 shots in a performance much improved over his debut against UCLA. While Gilbert showed flashes of brilliance against the Bruins, he hit only one of seven shots and fouled out after 19 minutes. He scored two points and grabbed two rebounds.

Aztec coach Tim Vezie wasnt overjoyed with his clubs first win. We couldnt get any continual motion going, he said. Wed sprint, then lose our momentum. I think the UCLA game left us drained emotionally. But its nice to be able to come out on top with flat out talent.

The Trojans were replaced in second by Michigan in the United Press International poll. Both UPI and Associated Press agree with Pittsburgh as No. 1, followed by Michigan, USC, Maryland and Georgia.

To win the national championship, Pitt, a 24-7 winner over arch rival Penn State, will have to get past fifth-ranked Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Waiting in the wings should Pitt fall are both Michigan and USC, wholl meet Jan. 1 in the Rose Bowl. There was little change in the polls, except for Nebraska, which lost to Oklahoma, 20-17, Thanksgiving Day.

(UPI) A fourth witness now says she provided Rubin Hurricane Carter with a phony alibi that placed the former middleweight contender away from a bar where three persons were murdered 10 years ago. The testimony Monday of Mrs.

Catherine McGuire that she lied at Carters first trial in 1967 agrees with that of three other witnesses who testified Saturday that they all provided false alibis by saying Carter was at the Nite Spot tavern in Paterson at the time the murders took place more than 10 years ago. Carter, a former top middleweight contender, and John Artis are being retried on charges of shooting a bartender and two patrons to death at the Lafayette Bar and Grill on June 17, 1966. Mrs. McGuire said she was asked by Raymond A. Brown, Carters lawyer at his first trial, to testify that Carter took her home from the Nite Spot at about 2:30 a.m., the time the murders.

Mrs. McGuire testified Brown was manipulating the time in the alibi by taking five minutes here and taking 10 minutes there and he was pushing the time up to 2:30 a.m. Mrs. McGuire said she spoke with Carter about the phony alibi last July. "I told him I would help him any way I could but I wouldnt tell a lie, she testified.

I told him there were a lot of lies going around at the other trial. Those testifying Saturday were William Hardney of Washington, D.C., Carters former sparring partner; Welton Deery, a housing patrolman for the Paterson police, and Anna Brown, Mrs. McGuires mother, who said Carter also drove her home from the Nite Spot about 15 minutes before the shootings were believed to have occurred. The only second half scoring came on field goals by Minnesotas Fred Cox and the 49ers Mike-Mayer. The Vikings Chuck Foreman, whose 93 yards put him fourth-and-one situation at the 49ers 15-yard line with two minutes left, and the game ended when Tarkenton overthrew Rashad in the end zone on a 33-yard pass. Defensive tackle Cleveland Elam had blocked Cox second extra point attempt, creating the four-point spread at the end which eliminated the possibility of a game-tying field goal and overtime. If Rashad had caught that last ball, I would have walked off with my head down. It would have been an injustice for us to win, said Tarkenton.

SAN MARCOS Sophomore defensive tackle Bob Anderson of Palomar College has been named to the All-Mission Conference Football Team for the second straight year by the conference coaches. His wife, two daughters and a son are active in swimming, too, and about the only time Malone has to relax are the rare occasions when he fishes in the surf or off the pier. Hes glad he didn't have to land that blue whale, but he still feels it would be a whale of an idea for the championship swimmers and water polists to have a good pool to swim in.
