Otis fumbled, and the ball was recovered by York's Brad Van Pelt. The Giants scored on the next play. They didn't score often enough, though, as the Cardinals posted a 17-14 victory. St. Louis got nosed out of the playoff picture by Washington.

COME BACK Jim Otis, St. Louis Cardinals fullback, watched the football bounce away from him in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Otis Cards defeat Giants. 17-14 was New captures Classic title USF Utah By Associated Press In this week's shakeup of college basketball's Top Ten, the University of San Francisco Dons are sure to be jostled closer to the top of the pile UCLA and Nevada-Las Vegas, two West Coast teams ranked above the No. 6 Dons in last week's Associated Press' poll, suffered their first losses of the season while USF improved its record to 8-0 and captured the championship of the Utah Classic San Francisco's 91-81 Saturday night victory, featuring a well-balanced scoring attack led by Bill Cartwright's 21 points, came against the strong Utah team which had dumped fifth-ranked Las Vegas earlier in the week The UCLA Bruins had their unbeaten record and no doubt their No.

3 national ranking swept away by seventh-ranked Notre Dame 66-63 in a Saturday afternoon game at Pauley Pavilion. Irish freshman Rich Bran-mng four points in the final 45 seconds made the difference "We knew they were ripe for an upset," said Notre Dame Coach Digger Phelps, but UCLA's Gene Bartow said it was just a matter of his team's poor Jacobson TiS shooting, especially in the final six minutes of the game when his team was scoreless. The Southern Cal Trojans lost in the finals of their annual tournament, 83-70 to the unbeaten Long Beach State 49ers who got 23 points from Lloyd McMil-lian, Stanford freshmen Kimberly Belton and Tom Schmalzried starred in a second half effort which carried the Cardinals past visiting isconsin 70-66, Washington State posted a 74-67 road victory over Jacksonville, and Las Vegas got back on the winning track by outsconng San Diego State 118-113 in some of Saturday's other games Sam Smith scored 34 points to lead Las Vegas, which trailed by 13 points once against the Aztecs who were playing without their top scorer, benched Will Connelly. Loyola and Nevada-Reno of the West Coast Athletic Association suffered losses the East, Loyola falling 71-48 at Dayton and Reno's Wolf Pack going down 83-70 at North Carolina State despite Edgar Jones' 27 points The Pacific Tigers were no match for ninth-ranked Arizona, losing 78-60 in Tucson. (AP) -When the New York Giants offered St. Louis Coach Don Coryell a television hookup in the dressing room that would have permitted the Cardinals to watch their playoff fate being decided, Coryell turned it down He knew what he was doing The man just does not like sad endings Coryell's Cardinals kept their National Football League post-season chances alive for a few extra hours Sunday, beating the New York Giants 17-14, as Jim Otis rushed for 119 yards But it hardly mattered, because Washington clinched the wild card berth in the National Football Conference later the day, defeating Dallas 27-14 The Cardinals were flying home to St. Louis when the Washington-Dallas game ended That was the way Coryell wanted it. "There's nothing we can do about that he said. There was, however, plenty St.

Louis could have done about its precarious playoff position which left them needing a loss by Washington to thrust them into the post-season competition They had, after all, matched the Redskins' 10-4 record but were eliminated because they lost twice to Washington There were three games we should have won, said Coryell "But there were others that we won that maybe we should have lost Good teams win when they play poorly We played poorly today, but we won This team has pride and I'm proud of its record The Cardinals came into Sunday's game knowing they had to win to have any playoff chance They almost lost. With Doug Kotar grinding out 103 yards, New York led 14-10 with 12 minutes to play. We were very worried," admitted Coryell. "The Giants are a much improved team They wanted to win that last game. It would have been a great ending for them to win that last one But the Cards came back Jim Hart moved them smartly downfield, completing a couple of 12-yard passes to Mel Gray and letting Otis and Steve Jones do the heavy ground work Finally, Jones capped the 12-play, 63-yard drive by barreling in for his second touchdown of the game and the winning points.

That left the Cards' fate in the hands of the Cowboys with the wild card berth and a playoff opener frigid Minnesota hanging in the balance. "I like to play them right now, said Hart. This is the best team I've played on It a better playoff team than the others There is, however, one important difference Those other Cardinals' teams were NFC East champions 1974 and 1975 This one is at home, through for the season jACOBSON IS FOR 296 291 309 286 165 194 217 267 286 Philadelphia 4 10 0 Giants 3 11 0 Central Division 11 2 1 7 7 0 6 6 0 5 9 0 Western Division Los Angeles 10 3 1 750 351 190 San Francisco 8 6 0 571 270 190 ISew Orleans 4 10 0 286 253 346 Atlanta 4 10 0 286 172 312 Seattle 2 12 0 143 229 429 wild card Saturdav's Games Minnesota 29. COMMERCIAL PRICES CALL 747-1010 STEEL BLT hitewau Win by Redskins surprises Cards Pac-8 to decide on expansion Unanimous verdict needed for Pac-10 SAN FRANCISCO (CPI) Arizona State and Arizona, dominant forces in the Western Athletic Conference the last few seasons, awaited today for final action on their application to join the prestigious Pacific-8 Conference. Pac-8 presidents are scheduled to vote on expanding to a Pac-lC format by taking in the two Arizona universities, winners of six of the last eight WAC championships The Arizona Board of Regents cleared the way for the two schools' plan to sever ties with the WAC last month by approving the proposed move However, there is no guarantee the applications will be rubber-stamped" and unanimous approval is required. The four Northwest universities in the Pac-8 Washington, Washington State, Oregon and Oregon State have indicated they have strong reservations about expansion The Northwest teams, lowest drawing in the conference, are afraid the rest of the universities would form a majority in voting on matters that would adversely affect them For one, they fear a change in the revenue-sharing among conference teams Under the current Pac-8 constitution, the four play in the smallest stadiums but derive equal revenue as the larger universities because of provisions that call for a 50-50 football gate split and equal shares of Rose Bowl income On the other hand, there have been veiled threats by USC and UCLA of going independent if the ASU and Arizona application are rejected "With us, it primarily a matter of fiscal responsibility," USC athletic director Richard Perry said "Intercollegiate athletics are not immune to the problems of inflation Our board has said to us.

at no time are we to enter into deficit financing All of us are forced to look at alternate ways to general income We sit here and look at two universities a stone throw away with nationally recognized programs with stadiums that will soon hold 60 to 70,000 Looking at it with common sense, it would be a good pay day Somehow, it makes sense to us The four Northwest schools have stadium capacities ranging from a low of 35.000 at WSU to 58.950 at Washington Lowest among the four California teams is at Berkeley, 76,780 Arizona has a 57.000 seat capacity stadium and ASU 6,000 less, but both have begun enlargement programs However, Perry assured the worried four that there has been no dialogue about moving schools out of the conference Scheduling also appears to be a stumbling block Projected seven-game conference schedules integrating the applicants have been drawn up through 1986 and it has been proposed the seven-game schedule be retained beyond that year while rotating each two teams out of schedule each year. A full-conference schedule of nine games also has been proposed, but with the NCAA rule of only 11 games per season. Pac-10 teams would be allowed to play only two games outside of the conlerence USC, for one. adamantly opposes a full-conference slate Perry argued the Trojans prefer to retain some intersec-tional games which have become traditions. such as the annual game against Notre Dame aim! cm' I 7 IRES MOUNTED GIE by DAYTON ST LOUIS (APi Quarterback Jim Hart of the St Louis Cardinals shook his head He couldn't believe it The Washington Redskins had crushed Dallas 27-14.
