A-8 DAILY TIMES-ADVOCATE. ESCONDIDO. CA MON OCT 15,1973 ays, unlikely hero, ends A longest World Series game OAKLAND (UPIl It was the Gone With Hie Wind" of World Senes games For epic contests filled with moments of high drama and low comedy, the second game of the 1973 World Series ranks with any of the 410 games in the 70-year history of the classic. The New York Mets battled the Oakland As for a record 4 hours 13 minutes before finally emerging with a hard fought 10-7 victory in 12 innings that evened the Series at a game apiece Sunday. The teams now take a much-needed day off after the emotionally draining game for the coast-to-coast flight to New York where the third game of the Series is scheduled at Shea Stadium Tuesday at 5 30 m.

PDT. After Oakland mowed down the Mets, 2-1, a rather ho-hum affair Saturday, this game had even the usually blase Oakland crowd of 49,151 roaring at times. Even the absence of the traditional World Series banners and. flags at the dull-gray Oakland Coliseum couldnt blunt the excitement. And when it was all over, after the big dispute, the wild throws and the desperate rallies, it was Willie Mays who tasted one of the last moments of glory his long career.

Mays only played the final four innings after being put in as a pinch runner for Rusty Staub and it was a nightmare for him at first. Hes 42 and he Oakland second baseman-made two errors to let in three more runs and that was the difference. That made it five errors for Oakland Darold Knowles made the other key one with a wild throw to the plate that let in two runs in the Mets four-run sixth inning that put them ahead, 6-3. The big rhubarb of the game came in the 10th inning when Joe Rudi threw out Bud Harrelson at the plate to keep the game tied At last, umpire Augie Donatelli ruled that catcher Ray Fosse brushed Harrelson with a tag Harrelson and the rest of the Mets claimed Fosse missed him while Fosse said he brushed him but Harrelson might not shows it. He fell down on the base paths and in the outfield where he misjudged two fly balls But in the top of the 12th with runners on first and third and two out.

Mays bounced a single Mets argue Page A-10 up the middle to snap a 6-6 tie. Rollie Fingers just threw his glove up in disgust Youre not supposed to be beaten by 42-year-old men. Not unless his name is George Blanda. I guess it was the toughest day I can ever remember, Mays admitted. But after his single broke the tie, Mike Andrews the third Dropped his parcel.

Oakland had just taken a 20-17 fourth-quarter lead and kicked off. San Diegos Willie McGee (28) caught it at the goal line, was hit a glancing blow and the football was ripped from his grasp. It was just another fumble in a season of mistakes for the Chargers, who led, but lost to the Raiders, 27-17. have felt it. In the 12th, Harrelson doubled and McGraw popped a bunt single over the head of charging third baseman Sal Bando to put runners on first and third.

When Fingers struck out Wayne Garrett and got Felix Millan to pop out, he seemed out of trouble. But Mays, still an old pro, stunned Fingers with the bouncing single to snap the tie. Andrews made two straight errors, letting John Milners grounder go through his legs and making a wild throw on Jerry Grotes single, for three more runs. Oakland rallied in the last of the 12th for one run but George Stone came on to get the save. Chargers not good enough By DAVE HOFF T-A Sports Editor SAN DIEGO If the San Diego Chargers proved anything in Sundays 27-17 loss to Oakland, its that theyre not as bad as they looked in last weeks 38-21 loss to Pittsburgh.

But theyre still not good enough. Not hardly. With rookie quarterback Dan Fouts calling the shots, the Chargers battled the Raiders blow-for-blow until the final round. Then, it was another rookie, Willie McGee, who delivered the knockout combination, finishing off his own team. A San Diego Stadium crowd of 50,672 saw the Chargers assume sole possession of last place in the American Football Conference West with a 1-4 record.

McGee felt like hiding from every one of them. In his first professional start, Fouts had directed his team to a 17-13 lead going into the final period when McGees living nightmare began. It started when the first-year cornerback, who was filling in for the injured Leonard Dunlap, was cited for pass interference when Oakland was on the San Diego 14. The penalty put the ball on the one, and Marv Hubbard needed two plays to crash over from there, giving the Raiders a 20-1Y lead with 9:54 remaining. Fouts, who had rallied his side from behind twice, didnt get an immediate chance to try again.

Following Hubbards TD, McGee had the ensuing kickoff ripped from his grasp and the Raiders recovered at the Charger 28. Two plays later, quarterback Ken Stabler hit tight end Bob Moore from the 26 for the games final touchdown. Trying to defend against Moore was none other than Willie McGee. McGees troubles actually started in the second period when the Chargers were leading, 3-0, on Ray Werschings first-quarter field goal. He fumbled a Ray Guy punt on his own 34 and that led to an 18-yard field goal by George Blanda.

Eliminate McGees mistakes and the Chargers might have beaten the Raiders for the first time since 1968. As it was, they still put forth their best effort of the 1973 season. Im not unhappy with our team, said head coach Harland Svare. We fought a very fine football team. Weve stayed together through all the disappointments and now theres a team feeling that were coming out of this era of foolishness.

The man who may bring the Chargers out of that era and into a new one is the rifle-armed rookie Fouts. Hell be the starter again next week against Atlanta. You couldnt ask anything more of a guy in his first start, said Svare. I dont know if Ive seen a rookie quarterback make less mistakes and he called most of the game himself. Oakland head coach John Madden concurred.

Fouts did a good job and for a rookie he sure has a lot of poise. Hes going to be a great quarterback for the Chargers. With the Charger running game virtually nonexistant, Fouts put the ball in the air 30 times and completed 12 for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was intercepted once. The Raiders had a 6-3 Beat Balias Jackson Rams roll watched it fall There it was.

Willie McGee turned in time to see his crucial fumble. Ron East (77) and 50,672 fans in San Diego Stadium saw it. Oaklands Pete Banaszak recovered it and the Raiders took advantage of it to score and win, 27-17, Sunday. The loss was the fourth in five games for the Chargers, last in the AFCs Western Division. Unitas is No.

2 again SAN DIEGO First, it was Marty Domres in Baltimore. Now, its Dan Fouts in San Diego. Once again, Johnny Unitas, a legend in his own time if there ever was one, finds himself relegated to the role of a backup quarterback. When youre the only quarterback inthe game to pass for more than 40,000 yards and youve proved yourself to be the best there ever was, taking a back seat to anybody doesnt come easy. As opposed to the situation in Baltimore, however, when Unitas expressed his bitterness over the way he was shuttled to the bench, now he accepts the decision.

Not wholeheartedly, but he accepts it. I have no bitterness, said Racings Stewart retires LONDON (UPI) World champion racing driver Jackie Stewart announced his retirement from racing Sunday. But his career finished with the death of his Tyrrell-Ford teammate Francois Cevert of France at Watkins Glen, New York, Oct. 6. Cevert died in practice for the U.S.

Grand Pnx, and the Scot withdrew from the race as a mark of respect for his French teammate. Stewart, 34, made his decision public at a special celebration to mark his triumph in the 1973 Formula One championship as a member of the Tyrell-Ford team. He started racing in 1961 and won the world title first in 1969 He won it again in 1971 and then after being out of action with a duodenal ulcer, regained the title from Brazils Emerson Fittipaldi this year with five grand pnx victories in a 15-race series. Stewart said he decided last April to retire this year but did not announce it because he felt the strain on his wife would be too great. Despite his success a record 27 grand prix wins Stewart has always been a strong advocate of safety measures on tracks and in cars.

He had good reasons. Among close friends he lost in crashes were Britons Jim Clark and Piers Courage, New Zealander Bruce McLaren and Austrian Jochen Rindt. Stewart, who was accompanied by his wife and two sons, paid tribute to Ken Tyrrell for preparing reliable and safe cars for him. 1 have been racing since 1961 and I havent a mark on my body to tell me that I have been racing. I am proud of this.

Without 'Tyrrell, I honestly believe that I would not now be anyone in motor racing. I could not have done it with another team, he said. Tyrrell, still upset at the death of Cevert, could not make a public tribute to Stewart. Staff Photos by Larry Littlefield left the field, they would prefer the Chargers future would not include the present head coach. If there is a change, however, it wont be to Unitas.

I want to stay in football, he said, but Id have to be in complete charge and that would mean being general manager too. If offered that opportunity in San Diego, would he take it? No. My family and all by business interests are in the East and thats where Id want to be. Everything I have is in Baltimore. There appears to be no place in San Diego for John Unitas as a coach or a starting quarterback.

Dave Hoff injury for the third game of the Series, to be played in New York Tuesday night. The As had tried to get Trillo added to the roster before the start of the Series, but the request was denied because he was not on the clubs 25-man roster as of Aug 31. Jose Morales was on that list, but Morales was sold by the As to Montreal Sept. 17. The As had hoped to get permission to have Trillo fill Morales spot.

"If wed been able to add Manny Trillo to the roster, he would have been at second base instead of Andrews, said Wil- hams after Sundays game. ceiver last year catching 62 for 1,048 yards, both top NFL marks. "Jackson was a star sought by the Rams when they traded quarterback Roman Gabriel to the Eagles a transaction made possible since they had dealt defensive end Coy Bacon and running back Bob Thomas to San Diego for Hadl. Hadl has turned in 16 games during a 12-season career when hes thrown for 300 or more yards, but he commented the first two quarters of the Dallas game constituted the best half I have ever played. Los Angeles led 34-14 at the intermission.

Roger Staubach came back to throw touchdown passes of 6 and 10 yards to Otto Stowe in the second half but the Cowboys couldnt catch up. An eight-yard field goal by Toni Fntsch wound up the scoring. Minnesota, the other undefeated NFL team, entertains the Rams in two weeks, but in the meantime, the Green Bay Packers invade the Coliseum next Sunday while the New York Giants will be at Dallas. The Rams possibly have lost two running backs for the Green Bay game Lawrence McCutcheon and Tony Baker. The former, who went into the Dallas game as the second leading rusher in the NFC, suffered a pulled hamstring, and Baker received a shoulder separation.

Hadl reflected on Jackson and commented, He has to be the greatest deep threat in the league. He and Lancq Alworth play the same kind of football, but I think Jackson is faster than Alworth. The two long touchdown passes were both off play action. Harold runs a post pattern and I just look for the last move he makes and try to throw it where I think hell be. With the Rams at 5-0, the Cowboys fell to 3-2.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Harold Jackson, the fleet little wide receiver reclaimed by the Los Angeles Rams, overdid himself in living up to his word. The team has done well emphasizing running, but if it needs passing, well be ready, the 173-pounder from Jackson State and the Philadelphia Eagles commented recently. With a 4-0 record and facing the Doomsday Defense of the Dallas Cowboys Sunday, the Rams coaching staff went for a game plan stressing the forward pass. Their plan prevailed 37-31 and the Rams now are one of two undefeated and untied clubs in the National Football League. Quarterback John Hadl and Jackson, in the first half, hooked up on four touchdown plays Sunday covering 63, 16, 67 and 36 yards.

A 44-yard pass, Hadl to Jack-son, set up one of placement specialist David Rays three field goals. That one, the only Rams score in the second half, traveled 35 yards. The others went 27 and 37. That had to be my best game ever, declared Jackson, who stands just 5-feet-10 but makes up for it with speed that once clocked 9 3 seconds for the 100-yard dash. I think I had a game a couple of years ago when I ran up 197 yards against the New York Giants, but this was the best.

Hadl is the best man Ive ever had throw to me. Winning their first four games, the Rams relied primarily on the running game, a fact which didnt bother Jack-son at all. Im glad to be back and the running game is winning, he pointed out, adding that he and Hadl had been working daily on pass patterns and timing. Jackson was traded to Philadelphia after being activitated five games with the Rams as a rookie in 1969. He promptly became the leagues leading re Unitas after rookie Dan Fouts performed admirably while going the distance in the Chargers 27-17 loss to Oakland Sunday.

'T understand the situation. I think Dan is coming along fine. Hes better than Marty Domres is right now. Head coach Harland Svare says he plans to go with Fouts again next week against Atlanta. But beyond that, its a week-to-week thing.

Unitas doesnt agree with that method of operation. They (the coaches) should make a firm commitment to go with him win or lose. Theres no question in my mind that John needs the rest, said Svare. I feel fine, countered Unitas. My legs ache a little, drews today (Sunday).

He has a history of chronic shoulder disability. He attempted to play, but was unable physically to play his position because of a bicep groove penchosynovitis in the right shoulder. "It is my opinion that he is disabled for the rest of the year. Andrews agreed with the statement, signed it, then asked permission to return to his home Boston. Permission was granted.

With the Mets ahead 7-6 in the 12th, Andrews let a ground ball go through his legs, allowing two runs to score. He then but theres no real problem. I really dont know why they traded for me in the first place because of the age factor (40) and everything. But, its their decision and theres nothing I can do about it. I think I can play another year or two and all I can do now is keep working and be ready in case anything happens.

Svare wanted Unitas because he felt the veteran would be the finishing touch on what he expected to be a contending team. Now, with the Chargers standing at 1-4 and in the cellar, its obvious theyre not a contender and Svare is looking to the future. Judging by the fans reaction to Svaro, which included showering him with beer as he fielded another grounder but threw wildly past first base, giving the Mets their final run. Those three runs proved to be the difference when the As came back for one run in their half of the 12th. "I thought it was right in my glove," said Andrews of the first error.

I honestly dont know what happened He was the third second baseman used by Oakland Manager Dick Williams the game. The loss of Andrews drops the As to 23 active players, two below the limit They plan to request permission to add utility infielder Manny Trillo Andrews out with OAKLAND (AP) Oakland second baseman Mike Andrews, who made two crucial fielding errors in the 12th inning of the As 10-7 loss to the New York Mets in the second game of the World Senes Sunday, was playing despite a chronic shoulder injury an ailment which will sideline him for the remainder of the Series. Andrews returned to his home in Boston Sunday night after being examined by team physician Dr. Harry R. Walker.

In a written statement, Walker said: "At the request of the Oakland As I examined Mike An halftime lead on the strength of two short Blanda field goals but Cont. On Page All Col 2 1 1 1.
