Nicklaus, the 24-year-old native of Columbus who won the title in Dallas a year ago, was tired but confident he could become the first golfer to repeat as PGA champion since Denny Shute, another Ohio golf great, turned the trick in 1936 and 1937. But things were not so optimistic for Snead, who skipped Wednesdays practice round over the par 70, Columbus Country Club course because of an aching back.

Snead spent the day receiving treatments for his back and admitted if it was not better by his scheduled tee-off time he would drop out. Tony Lema and Nicklaus were rated the co-favorites in pre-tour-ney speculation. They finished one-two in the British Open last week and Lema, of San Leandro, has been the hottest item on the golf tour in recent weeks, winning four of the last six major tournaments. A starting field of 164 started the tournament Altho most pros looked to Nicklaus and Lema as the biggest threats, they wore not discounting Arnold Palmer, who has won just about everything except the PGA. One of the big questions in the Escondido training camp of the American Football League champion San Diego Chargers is whether rookie Gary Kirner can do the job at the crucial position. The Chargers have two top veterans returning at the slot perenial All-AFL standout Ron Mix and underrated Ernie Wright a pair of hard-nosed giants. Still, the champions will need all of the help they can muster at the position. Kirner undertook a tough physical fitness program to whip himself into shape in an all-out effort to make the San Diego roster. As a result, he has gained 40 pounds since last Fall.

The well-built Los Angeles native was one of 28 rookies who checked into camp Wednesday. They immediately received uniforms and met with Charger general manager and head coach Sid Gillman and his staff. On a road trip that has seen Dodger pitching at its worst in 1964 or 1963 for that matter the hitters finally have come to life. The names are the same.

But the four home- runs that contributed to Wednesday nights 13-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals were well above average for the usually light-hitting Dodgers. Ron Fairly hit two home runs his fourth and fifth, to drive in four runs for the winners. Willie Davis bombed his sixth homer with a man on in the seventh, and also collected two other hits in five times at bat Tom Davis, periodically resembling his 1962-63 style, hit a solo homer his fifth. Larry Miller, the 27-year-old rookie, won his first game for the Dodgers and worked 7 innings.

He gave up seven hits and two earned 1 Phil Ortega and Ron Perranoski finished up in relief after Miller got in trouble in the eighth on two walks and a single. Ortega got a save by forcing Mike Shannon to ground into a double play that ended the rally. Bob Gibson, usually a tougher pitching customer, was blasted for nine runs on six hits in his seven innings of work as the loser. Los which blew three games on the road in the ninth inning, actually put the game away for keeps in the fourth with four runs on two singles, a wild pitch and two errors. That was all the Dodgers needed to win.

In other National League action, the Braves handed the Giants a 6-2 setback as Rico Carty and Eddie Mathews slugged homers; the Pirates blanked the Phillies, 34), as Jim Bunning suffered his fourth loss in 13 decisions; the Reds inched a little nearer the lead by edging the Houston Colts, 2-1, on Jim OTooles seven-hitter, and Lew Burdette led the Cubs past the Mets, 3-2, by homering and throwing a one-hitter. The sweep of the double-header gave the Angels a 6-3 record on the home stand and it moved the club into sixth place, ahead of Boston by. a single percentage point For Chance it was his fifth shutout of the season and the third time this year and fifth in his career that he struck out 10 or more men in a game. Whitey Ford raised his seasons record to 12-2 and tied a club record with his seventh shutout as the Yankees moved into first place by toppling the Orioles, 2-0.

In other American League games, the Red Sox routed the White Sox as Dick Stuart slammed his 19th and 20th homers, 11-2; Jim (Mudcat) Grant pitched Minnesota past Washington, 6-0, allowing 13 hits but getting out of every jam, and Kansas City swept a twin bill from Cleveland, 5-3 and 3-2, behind the throwing of Wes Stock and Ted Bowsfield. By United Press International When Dean Chance says he feels strong, the opposition should beware. He demonstrated that Wednesday night. And as a result, the Los Angeles Angels swept a double-header from the Detroit Tigers by scores of 1-0 and 5-4. The shutout belonged to Chance.

The Angels thus were able to take Thursday off with a more confident outlook on the 13-game road trip which opens Friday night against the Minnesota Twins, who dropped a double-header to Los Angeles last Sunday. In posting his second straight 1-0 victory. Chance showed his power and skill by striking out 12 men while allowing only five hits. In his previous shutout against the Chicago White Sox last Saturday he allowed four hits but struck out only three men. But it took an eighth-inning home run by Bob Perry, his second of the season, to give the Angels the run they needed for the victory.

Three players were ejected and three fouled out in the roughly-played tilt The officials whistled 40 personal and technical fouls, 23 on the barrelling, busting, football-minded Warriors. Fallbrook was never in contention after high-scoring Mike McGill drew his fifth personal early in the third period. Rick Saunders also fouled out for the losers, as did Ted McCord for Oceanside. Vista nailed down a third-place tie with the Escondido White team in the final standings by coming from eight points down in the last quarter to turn back Orange Glen, 56-54. Steve Castaneda led the Panthers with six points in the period and 18 for the game.

Dale Whaley had 13 and Tom Heckendom potted 12. Dennis Haight topped Orange Glen with 18. Ryan Wilson tallied 11 markers and Richard Gillett scored 10. Whaley hit cm a 10-foot jumper with 1:01 to play to give Vista its margin of victory. Kirner, married and the father of a 19-month-old son, is anxious to get started. I have wanted to play pro football for as long as I can remember, he said. Im a little nervous. I realize it is much tougher than college ball. Kirner, whose teammate at USC was Escondidos Toby Thurlow, was named All-Coast Tackle the past two campaigns.

He received honorable mention on a couple of All-America teams after the 1963 season. Only 22, Kirner has 17 units to pick up at USC before receiving his degree in business administration. Tackles run much larger in pro football than in the college ranks. Kirner knows this. Thats why he built himself up this Summer.

I just want to makj the squad. I believe I can handle the tackle position in pro ball. Gillman hopes so too. The fifth-round draft choice of the Chargers could help the club immensely. Shea Works Out One of the veteran Charger guards was amonu four returnees on hand Wednesday to get in some running.

He was 250-pound Pat Shea, a regular last season. I asked for permission to report early, the big San Diegan said. Wayne Frazier, Keith Kindermann and Fred Moore also will work out this week. I want to get down to about 242 pounds. That was my playing weight last year.

The scrimmage here July 25 will get under way with an autograph sesion from 7 to 7:20 p.m. Players will sign autographs for fans at the fence separating the bleachers from Memorial Field. Gillman will conduct a grid clinic from 7:20 to 7:40. The scrimmage, which will be a full-scale operation with the exception of kicking, will start at 8. Admission to the scrimmage will be $1 per person.

Proceeds will go to the City of Escondido to help defray the cost of building the Chargers facilities. The first practice session for the rookies will be conducted on the Chargers new Escondido training field from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday. A second drill is set later in the day, from 3 to 4:45 p.m.

Another players meeting with Gillman and his assistants will follow after dinner from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Gilman said that Fridays schedule will be the daily routine after the veterans arrive here next Monday, check out uniforms and strut their stuff in front of the photographers. Curfew Set Curfew is 10:30 p.m. each The players will be required to be in the Fireside banquet room or breakfast between 7 and 7:15 a.m. each day.

Bed checks, in players rooms at the TraveLodge Motel will be conducted each night following curfew. Its a rugged routine, but Gillman, a taskmaster, relieves strongly in discipline. It paid off handsomely with an AFL title last season and Gillman would like nothing better than a repeat performance. Thus, the Charger rookies actually wont engage in any contact work until Friday. And the high fence around their attractive facilities on North Escondido Boulevard will keep out intruders and enable the coaching staff to get down to business.

-The publics best opportunity to watch the Chargers in action will re at a controlled scrimmage at Escondido High Schools Memorial Field Saturday night, July 25. Gillman announced Thursday that All-American guard Rufus Guthrie of Georgia Tech will not play this season because of a knee injury. He hurt the knee in the Chargers initial exhibition game last year and is not ready to return to action. Getting back to Kirner, the former USC tackle is a tremendous specimen. He weighed 202 pounds at the conclusion of his senior season at USC last year.

Kirner, who stands 6-3, tipped the scales at 242 pounds Wednesday. It should all be muscle, he confided.
