A 25-14 manhandling of Sweetwater High at Memorial Field Friday night before 5,500 Homecoming fans did the trick for Chick Embreys charges. A fog-filled socond half slowod tho Cougars' somewhat but by then they already had disposed of the hard-luck Red Devils for their second circuit success without a loss. Sweetwater, which was plagued with troubles even before it left its homeland, fell from the lead and has a 2-1 reading.

The two teams dashed head-on at the same site during the 1958 campaign in a gamq that, like Friday nights tilt, was ex-pected to determine the Metro League king. It also was the Cougars homecoming game, When the dust had cleared; the Red Devils were on top, 16-14, on the strength of a disputed safety. It netted Sweetwater the Metro championship and marred Escondidos home coming. The loss was a bitter blow for coach Chick Embrey, who was in his fourth year at the helm of the Cougars.

He reflected on it all week long as he prepped his charges for Friday nights crucial encounter. Escondido wasn't found wanting, playing 24 minutes of best high school football you could ask for while rolling up a 19-0 advantage over the hapless Red Devils in the opening half. Revenge was a long time coming, but it was a sweet way for Embrey to gain it. I have to admit everything we did was almost perfection in the first half, he remarked in the dressing room. We worked hard for this one and the kids really wanted it.

Tho triumph helped snap jinx that has prevailed over Embrey-coached teams in homecoming games. We always seem to save our worst for homecoming, he admitted, but we sure reversed the trend tonight. Actually, the Cougars have a respectable 5-3 mark in home coming competition since Chick took over the club back in 1956. 'We played lousy in most of them, tho, he asserted. Es condido dropped a 30-20 decision to Chula Vista in its home coming contest last season.

Tho Cougar coach was lavish in his praise of players. That Montiel was really something, wasnt Embrey asked. The question didnt need an answer, Montiel was the driving force that propelled Escondido to the win. His performance was flawless, particularly on the deadly option play. The Giants won their earlier meeting this season, 31-14, but the Cardinals have scored upsets in Yankee Stadium two seasons running. Both teams are in good shape. Detroit, with a 4-2 record that makes it the Packers leading Western Division challenger, takes the show on the road for two straight games on the West Coast. The Rams, who won their first game of the year last week end, still have a long injury list, including center Art Hunter, tackle Frank Varrichone and end Duane Allen.

But then the Knicks lost their eye, and Rodgers and Attles repeatedly broke loose on fast breaks as the War-' riors pushed their lead up to 22 points. Attles had 27 points and Rodgers 21, while Guerins 37 topped the Knickerbocker scoring.

Boston, boasting a 5-2 record in the Eastern Division and fielding the second-ranked unit in rushing defense, gels things rolling Saturday night (tonight) by visiting the Buffalo Bills, the AFLs leading ground gaining team and a two-point underdog. The Bills, riding a record three-game win streak, pin their hopes for continued success on the powerful legs of 243-pound fullback Carlton (Cookie) Gilchrist. The Taxons, who walloped defending champion Houston last week, are a three-point choice to stop the traveling Oilers again Sunday in their second battle. New Yorks revamped Titans (3-5), tied with Buffalo for third place in the Eastern Division, are seven-point favorites at home over the vic FRANK CLIBOURNI Dofonsivo Tiger 'Advocate tory-starved Oakland Raiders (0-7) while the Denver Broncos (6-2) visit the San Diego Chargers (3-5) in other games on Sunday.

The Denver-San Diego game is a toss-up. Dallas coach Hank Stram, reporting his team in fine shape, said he has prepared his club for a change In tactics by Houston. If Jackie Lee replaces George Blanda and goes for the short passes, Stram said that well te ready for that too. San Diego, smarting from three straight setbacks, is plagued by the loss of rookie Lance Alworth, quarterback Dick Wood and possibly Keith Lincoln. On the bright side; middle linebacker Chuck Allen and Earl Faison are in top shape for the game.

Denver's Jack Faulkner, not overconfident despite the San Diego injuries, must work without the full support of halfbacks A1 Frazier and Donnie Stone but has his team up after the Buffalo upset last week. point choices at home over the Dallas Cowboys, while the second-place New York Giants (5-2) are picked by 13 at home over the St. Louis Cardinals. It was that kind of a night for the losers, but what a beaut for the Cougars. They marched to touchdowns each of tho throe times they had the ball in the first half while holding the Sweeties to three first downs and 14 yards rushing to take a commanding 19-0 edge.

Quarterback Jerry Montiel, making his first start since the season opener, was sensational, as was tackle Frank Clibourne. It was Montiels play calling that amazed Embrey. "I just cant get over how great his calling was tonight, Chick kept saying over and over in the dressing room. Dofonsivo mentor Bill Green had equal praise for tho 210-pound Clibourne. He was a real tiger out there, wasnt he? Bill asked.

He and (Jeff) Johnson and (Eric) West really did a job. The whole first defensive team did, for that matter. Green felt this defensive showing overshadowed last weeks effort in a 6-0 win over Mar Vista because Sweetwaters offense was so much better. The Cougars had molded a 25-0 lead before Embrey sent in the subs and the Devils pushed over all their points in the final two minutes. Assistant coach Vern Brizendine was in charge of the visitors on what was probably their unluckiest night of the year.

They (the Cougars) really had us defensed, he an-. alyzed as he walked off the field. He wasnt in much of a talking mood and you couldnt blame him. He still had to face a ride home in the dense fog on top of everything else. Escendide now must face Chula Vista and Hilltop in its final league encounters.

Victories are a must in both to assure the title. With Montiel back to work fulltime the Cougars took full advantage of their option play and the Red Devils couldnt cope with it. You just cant stop that play, Chick said. Las Vegas couldn't at the start of the season and it sure fooled Sweetwater. Embrey called two of the touchdown plays but gave Montiel full credit for the other two six-pointers.

Montiel tabbed the first one when fullback Mickey Ensley, who played his greatest game as a Cougar, boomed one yard to paydirt at 5:46 of the first period. The second TD came on the first play of the second session when Montiel called an audible at the line of scrimmage and flipped a five-yard pass to Steve Fenton who was all alone in the end zone. Halfback Bob (The Blur) Blunt, who played despite a mild case of the flu and was used seldom to eat up yards, tallied twice to run his season point total to 56. His first came in the second quarter on a nine-yard burst round his left end on the effective option series. In the fourth stanza, Mike Wexler fired to The Blur for a 24-yard TD play.

It was Wexlers first offensive play of the night. Altho Blunt hauled in the aerial at the 10, he revealed later that he never did have full possession, of the ball even after he crossed the goal line. Embrey filled the lineup with, reserves midway thru the finale and only then did the Devils begin to threaten. Kyle Morgan plunged onejard for a score with about two minutes left and Rick Johnson tossed 25 yards to Gary Dickey for the last TD with 22 seconds remaining. The losers crossed the 50 just once In the first half.

They didnt make a first down until the closing minutes of the half. Meanwhile, Escondido was driving 76, 67 and 82 yards for six-pointers. A fumble by Blunt in. the third period put Sweetwater in business on the EHS 16 but it could get just to the 12. Johnson tried a field goal from there but it hit the crossbar and bounced straight down to the ground.

A fumble recovery by Alex Valkoff set up the Cougars last TD. He smothered a bobble by Dave Gonzales on the Sweeties' 27 and in three plays Escondido was into paydirt on the Wexler-Blunt clincher. Lin Scert ftwctiwai Oft Escondido 6 13 0 ftMflRl Lnaley. 1 run. Muck failed) Montiel to Fenton.

The Bears art desperate because, with a 4-3 record, they cannot afford another defeat in the National Football League race. They are in a vengeful frame of mind because they now have lost to the Packers six straight times, including a 49-0 shellacking last Sept. 30. And they are coming off two straight brilliant defensive games in which they held the Baltimore Colts to 13 points and last Sunday did not yield a touchdown in a losing effort against the Detroit Lions. Despite these factors, the oddsmakers are sticking with the Packers and Hornung and have made them 11 -point favorites for the game at Chicago.
