for fall seeded crops The only possible way anyone knows how much fertilizer to use on individual crops is by chemical test of their soil The four most important elements for plant growth are nitrogen phosphorus potash and calcium (lime) The functions of these elements in the soil and plants are as follows: NITROGEN: Stimulates a rapid vigorous growth of plants It gives the leaves and stems a dark green color Nitrogen is an essential element in the formation of plant proteins When soils are low in available nitrogen plants make slow growth are stunted have small stalks and yellowish green leaves Nitrogen can be lost by: leaching from the plant root zone by excess water or reduced and lost to the atmosphere as nitrogen gas It may also he lost by erosion of the top soil PHOSPHORUS: Is one of the most important essential elements in the growth of plants It stimulates root development enabling the plant to absorb larger amounts of nutrients from the soil thus making more rapid plant growth It is necessary in the flowering and fruiting and in the development of seeds Phosphorus hastens maturity improves the quality of grains and forage Phosphorus may be lost by soil erosion and a small amount by leaching The biggest problem encountered by using phosphorus is what is called Usually not more than 5 30 of the phosphorus added to soils is utilized by the crop to which it is applied The 70 to 95 not used is fixed in the soil POTASSIUM: Stimulates root development It promotes the health and vigor of plants and increases the resistance of many crops to diseases Potassium increases yields and improves quality of both grains and forage CALCIUM: Assets in controlling the PIT in the soil It assists other elements in do- intenued plant growth Calcium increases yields and quality of crops mg the job they were do for plant growth LITTER MAY CAUSE BREAST BLISTERS IN BROILER FLOCKS A high incidence of breast blisters in broiler flocks may be a v'arning signal that
