A-8 DAILY TIMES-ADVOCATE. ESCONDIDO. SEPT. 6. 1971 Leonard gives Cal 500 foes the air By LARRY LITTLEFIELD T-A Sports Writer ONTARIO Veteran driver Joe Leonard wasnt bothered by the air outside, hot and smoggy, nearly as much as he was over the air inside inside his big Firestone racing tires.

Early in the race I was having problems with the chassis, Leonard said. I radioed the pits and when I came in the Firestone men were able to put a little more air in the front left tire and it smoothed everything out. I had been losing ground to the leaders. Leonard, a 36-year-old former motorcycle champion from San Jose, went on to win the second annual California 500-mile auto race Sunday at Ontario Motor Speedway. Starting in the No.

11 spot in row four, Leonard took over the lead of the 161st lap in his turbo-charged Ford Colt when his teammate, A1 Unser, was forced out of the race. Leonard, the No. 2 man for the Johnny Lightning-Samsonite team, averaged 152.254 miles per hour to beat out second place Art Pollard of Medford, Ore. Pollard, who also finished second last year, was, along with Leonard, one of the shortlived pioneers in Andy Granatellis turbine cars which later were disallowed for United States Auto Club races. Finishing third was Gary Bettenhausen of Tinley Park, 111., followed by Lloyd Ruby of Wichita Falls, Steve Krisiloff of Parsippany, N.J.; Jim Malloy of Denver, Peter Revson of New York and last years winner, Jim McElreath of Arlington, Tex.

There were five leaders in the race. Pole-winner Mark Donohue, who turned in the top qualifying time of 185.004 in his McLaren turbo-charged Offy, led for the first 50 laps, then ran out of gas and lost 10 laps. A1 Unser took over the lead after Donohue either missed the pit signal or ignored it for three consecutive laps. With brother Bobby Unser right behind, A1 Unser led until lap No. 80 when he pitted for 34.7 seconds and Bobby took over.

A1 regained the lead on lap 97 when Bobby pitted. A.J. Foyt led briefly when A1 Unser stopped to refuel on lap 122. On lap 118, Bobby Unsers airfoil collapsed, sending him into the first turn wall. He was unhurt.

A1 Unser regained the lead from Foyt on lap 127. The only accident of the race was minor and neither Bud Tingelstad or John Mahler were injured when they collided on turn No.3 in the 165th lap. Only one injury was reported and that was to Mike Bevin, crew chief for Johnny Rutherford, who suffered facial burns while trying to extinguish the second of two fires in Rutherford's car in the pits. Perhaps the most disappointing performance of the day was Mario Andrettis failure to complete even one lap. His car.

starting in the middle of the third row. was off the track between turns one and two and the problem was later determined to be electrical, Leonard, who noted that A1 Unsers Offy was both lighter and faster than his Ford, wasn't among the leaders until the 50th lap. "Mv best lap was only 171, so I knew I had my work cut out for me," said Leonard, who is under the direction of Parnelli Jones. "Fortunately for me, some of the other drivers dropped out. There were about 10 drivers out there in really good cars and the competition was tough.

It wasn't until near the end, when I saw A1 drop out, that I felt I had a good chance to win. "I was running as the No. 2. but I had Firestone, which is No. 1 and Samsonite, which is also No.

1, on my side. Some of thats gotta rub off on a guv." Oniy 12 cars in a field of 33 finished the race. A winning smile Padres rookies Milt Richman Cy Young in Detroit LPI Sports Writer In Victory Circle, the director of the Johnny Lightening team, Parnelli Jones, helps veteran driver Joe Leonard tip up a bottle of champagne in celebration of Leonards victory Sunday in the California 500-mile auto race at Ontario Motor Speedway. Leonard drove his Samsonite Special at an average speed of 152.254 miles per hour as only 12 cars from a starting field of 33 finished before 168,420. sparkle SAN DIEGO (AP) Now that he has seen San Diego rookies Jay Franklin and Mike Ivie, Atlanta Manager Luman Harris is convinced that baseballs somewhat socialistic free agent draft system really works.

If the Padres keep drafting kids like that, it wont be long Padre Box Page A-10 before they develop the way the Oakland Athletics did after they got kids like Reggie Jackson, Rick Monday and Sal Bando, Harris said Sunday after the Braves beat San Diego, 5-2. Ivie, a 19-year-old giant of a catcher who was the nations No. 1 draft choice in 1970, collected his first two major league hits Sunday. Franklin, an 18-year-old right-hander who was the second player chosen in the June 1971 draft, had dazzled the Braves with two shutout innings of relief in his big league debut Saturday night. I can see now that the draft is starting to work I was for it all time, said Harris of the system that gives the lower, teams in the standings precedence in the draft over the pennant winners and contenders.

The teams that have been on top for several years are starting to dry up in their farm systems and the weaker teams all have a lot of good kids coming up, said the Atlanta manager. That the way it should be the pro football draft proved that. Think how great it would be to go into a September and have all six teams in a division fighting for first place. The Padres open a three -game series here tonight against Cincinnati and Dave Roberts, 12-14, will oppose Reds right-hander Wayne Simpson, 3-5. Harpers two HRs whip Cal MILWAUKEE (AP)-Tommy Harjjer was productive testimony Sunday to the maxim that some of the smartest trades are the ones that are never made even when the dealer is Frank Lane.

Lane, the Milwaukee Brewers baseball operations chief who has made hundreds of deals in 40 years, nearly swapped Harper to the California Angels 2 Mi months ago for malcontent outfielder Alex Johnson. But Harper, a .175 hitter with two home runs on June 11, remained a Brewer and has been on a tear ever since the June 15 trading deadline. He belted his 13th and 14th homers Sunday, driving in four runs, to spark the Brewers to a 6-4 victory over conincidentally California. The Angels moved on to Oakland where they met the A's this afternoon. Andy Messer-smith, 14-13, was to pitch against Oaklands Chuck Dobson 15-3.

Harper, now hitting .270, led off the first inning by lining Tom Murpheys first pitch a fast ball into the left field seats. An inning later, the veteran outfielder parked an Eddie Fisher knuckleball into the same general area with two men on as the Brewers transformed a 4-2 deficit to a 5-4 lead. Dodgers vs. Giants: Its 6now or never NEW YORK (UPI) Billy Martin keeps talking about the CY Young Award. He feels it should go to his man.

Why not? he wants to know. If my man beats him in victories and innings pitched, whos more valuable to his team? Youre mixing up the CY Young Award with the MVP, somebody said to him. The CY Young Award goes to the best picher in the league. You think Mickey Lolich should get it over Vida Blue? Hell, yes, Billy Martin said in that unsure way of his. Vida Blue has been having a spot of trouble winning lately but even if he should suddenly decide to go back home to Mansfield, and forget all about the rest of the season hed still have the CY Young Award all locked up.

You can throw the MVP in, too. Whos gonna beat him out? Tony Oliva? Bobby Murcer? Merv Rettenmund? Vida Blues record is 23-7 with Oakland now. He was worked 283 2-3 innings for the As. Mickey Lolich is 22-10 with Detroit. The 319 innings he pitched leads the league and is the most any Detroit lefhander has recorded since Ed Killian way back in 1904, but that really isnt enough to knock Blue out of the box for the CY Young Award.

Whats more, nobody knows this better than Mickey Lolich. I think if I was ever notified that I had won the award Id figure someone was playing a joke on me, says the puffy-featured, wavy-haired Tiger lefty. I just dont feel Im gonna win it. I dont know why. Its just a feeling I have.

The writers vote on it, right? Right. Okay," Lolich goes on, I bet if you went up to the writers right now and ask them who theyre bonna vote for when its all over theyd say Blue. If you said what about Lolich, theyd say Hugh? Whos he? Oh yeah, he had a good year. Why is Lolich that sure Blue will get the award? Hes been more the pheenom, said the Detroit pitcher. Look, I dont want to downgrade him.

Hes a good pitcher and his fast ball is fantastic. I think people should consider the fact though that hes 22 and can blow the ball by the hitters; Im 31 and cant do that. Ive got to pitch more, depend on finesse more. What Mickey Lolich is trying to say is that hes a more complete pitcher than Vida Blue, and nobody will argue that. Nor will they argue hes pitching in a much tougher ball park.

The thing that hurts Lolich most is here hes having the greatest year of his career and at the end of it everybody will say so what? Mickey Lolich will be No. 1 in Detroit but No. 2 everywhere else. Its always been pretty much that way, Lolich says without crying about it. First I was second to Denny McLain and now that Im having my greatest year Im second to somebody else.

I always come up a little short. Lolich doesnt think he has any chance of winning the CY Young Award then? I woudnt exactly say that, he laughs. 'Tve got two chances of winning it. You know the two slim and none. Mickey Lolich is a good pitcher.

LOS ANGELES (AP) If the Los Angeles Dodgers have any hope at all of catching the San Francisco Giants in the National League West, its now or never. The Dodgers and Giants open a three-game series this evening at Dodger Stadium and Los Anreles, frankly, cant afford a single loss. We either sweep them or forget about it, said Los Angeles catcher Tom Haller, a former Giant, putting the race into cold, harsh terms. The Dodgers tuned up for the big series by winning five of their last seven starts but they fell short against Cincinnati Sunday, losing 7-4 despite home runs by Richie Allen and Maury Wills. Pitching the series opener tonight will be Don Sutton, 13-11, for Los Angeles, and John Cumberland 8-13, for San Francisco.

The Dodgers believe theyre still in the race but their bats, especially those of Wes Parker and Jim Lefebvre, dont quite act the part. Between them, Lefebvre and Parker are 0-25. Parker hasnt hit in his last 16 at bats and Lefebvre is 0-for-9. If I take Wes out, who do I play? pondered Los Angeles Manager Walt Alston. But I will stay with Bobby Valentine at second base in place of Lefebvre.

Valentine had three of the Dodgers 10 hits Sunday against Cincinnatis Ross Grimsley and winner Wayne Granger. But a costly first inning kept the Dodgers in pursuit of the Reds all afternoon. Cincinnati jumped on starter Doyle Alexander for three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second for a 5-0 advantage. Jurgensen breaks shoulder Redskins lose Sonny By Associated Press Sonny Jurgensen of the Washington Redskins, top ranking passer in the history of the National Football League, has joined the long list of star quarterbacks sidelined by injuries. He suffered a broken left arm in a 27-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins in an exhibition game Saturday night.

Jurgensen, 37, suffered the injury with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter when he and several other Redskins tackled Miami safety Dick Anderson, who had just intercepted a Jurgensen aerial. Dr. P.M. Palumbo, the Redskins team physician, diagnosed the injury as a fracture of the coracoid process after an extensive series of rays Sunday at Arlington Hospital in Virginia. The coracoid is a small bone between the upper arm and shoulder.

'The veteran quarterback, who is entering his 15th NFL season, was flown to Oklahoma City Sunday night for consultation with Dr. Donald ODonaghue, a bone specialist. Dr. ODonaghue confirmed tht surgery will be necssary and said it might be performed today. Jurgensen said Sunday night his doctors felt he would be out of action "at least four or five weeks." Jurgensen joins an illustrious list of injured quarterbacks.

Others sidelined at present include Joe Namath, Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas. Going into this season, Jurgensen had completed 2,184 of 3,863 passes for 29,332 yards and 236 touchdowns, with a completion percentage of 56.5. He holds NFL season records for most passing attempts, 508, most completions, 288, and most yardage, 3,747. Redskin Coach George Allen must now turn to Bill Kilmer, Jurgensens veteran back-up man. In Sundays only exhibition contest, the Atlanta Falcons scored 38 points in the first half and coasted to a 45-35 victory over the New England Patriots, -spoiling Jim Plunketts debut as a starting pro quarterback.

Veteran running back Jim Cannonball Butler of Atlanta ran for a 74-yard touchdown on the opening play from scrimmage, then added touchdown runs of 1 and 11 yards as the in Falcons built, up their lead. ii In a doubleheader Saturday1, at Cleveland, Pittsburgh the New York Jets 35-21 behind, four touchdown passes by Terry Bradshaw, and Cleveland trounced the New York Giants 30-7.
