Lose Despite 273 Yards 2 UNCASTH, NIW HA- FRIDAY, NOVtMBtB 26, 1976 Lions Have Psychological Advantage Penn State Upset Pitt Bill Carroll New Era Sports Editor after this season. But O.J. hinted he wont. "Like everyone else, Id like to be No. 1 Jimmy Brown set the standard.

If I stay In football long enough Id like the chance (to pass Brown.) Its Incentive for me, as forall runners." Despite his great statistics, Simpson said, "Going into the game I felt I hadn't been able to help the team like I feel I can. I was just not doing the things I'd like to do. i Without Simpson the Bills would have been almost devoid of offense, although much of the credit should go to his offensive line which includes players who starred at Michigan (Reggie McKenzie, Paul Seymour) and Michigan State (Joe DcLamlel-! lour). Marongi Disappointing Buffalo quarterback Gary Marangi didn't come close to his pass receivers most of the day. He completed just four of 21 passes for 29 yards.

The games first score didn't come until midway through the second quarter when Landry concluded a 69-yard, ten-play march with a 21 yard touchdown pass to Hill. Soon afterward Detroit got the ball back on the Bills' 16 when Keith Moody let a punt slip through his hands. Garth Ten Napel recovered and scared an apparent touchdown, but officials ruled the play a muff" rather than a fumble and the ball could not be advanced. Benny Ricardo wound up kicking a 22-yard field goal after the Lions failed to go in from the four, i Ricardo also kicked a 35-yarder in the third quarter to climax a second-half open- ing drive that began with Leonard Thompson's 32-yard kickoff return. Later, Lem Barney returned a put 30 yards and Detroit wound up with a 24 yard Landry to Hill scoring pass in the drive.

Simpson's first TD came in the closing moments of the third period, with wide receiver Bob Chandler throwing a picture cross-body block on the final defender, Levi Johnson. i A 67-yard, six play Lions drive resulted in a four-yard touchdown run by Bussey at 1 :24 of the final period. It was set up on a 28-yard run by Landry, his longest in four years. PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) The message on the Pontiac Silverdome scoreboard read Lions menu: turkey, buffalo and Juice. The Detroit Lions certainly added Buffalo to their Thanskgiving Day menu Thursday, but they couldn't quite handle O.J. (Orange Juice) Simpson. Juice was on the loose as he had never been in his brilliant eight-year National Football League career But his record-setting performances weren't nearly enough and the Lions coasted to a nationally-televised 27-14 victory over Simpson and the Buffalo Bills.

It was Buffalo's eighth straight loss. Simpson' Record Here's what Simpson did: Rushed for 273 yards in 29 carries to break his old NFL record of 250 yards in one game. -Became the league's first player to rush for 200 or more yards five times. Passed the 9, 000-yard career rushing mark, hitting 9,252 He's the leagues second all-time runner behind Hall-of-Famer Jimmy Brown's 12,312. Reached 1,129 yards for the season, marking the fifth consecutive year he has run for at least 1,000 Scored both Buffalo touchdowns, the first on a 48-yard burst in the closing minutes of the third quarter and the other on a 12-yard run in the final period.

It's something that when your career is over you look back on with fond memories," Simpson said of his great game. But the things I'm proudest about were still in college (Southern Bills Coach Jim Rmgo called Simpson's performance fantastic and said, "I've nev er seen a halfback run like that. He deserves the record for what he's put into the game." It was Simpson the Lions were talking most about, too. although Detroits Dexter Bussey had his best day with 137 yards rushing and quarterback Greg Landry threw a pair of touchdown passes to rookie tight end David Hill. He's one hellatious football player, said Lions Coach Tommy Hudspeth.

There's just one O.J. But I'd take a win over a record any day "0 in a class by himself. Hudspeth added. No doubt about it O.J. has tremendous acceleration, great balanceand a great field of vision.

What makes him especially good is great lateral movement. Detroit linebacker Jim Laslavic said: If he really slams into you hes easy to handle but you can't get him to slam into you. The man has a thousand moves. Bussey said. I grew up watching O.J.

Hes an unbelievable back." Simpson Modest Simpson seemed somewhat reserved about the whole thing. The purpose of coming in is to win ad not to set a record," he said. If it occurs, it occurs. Some have theorized that Simpson, who missed training camp and a couple of games in a contract dispute, would quit Surprise Fake Punt Key to Cowboys' Win Improved Picked to Look for Penn State to turn a mediocre season into a memorable one by upsetting arch rival Pitt on national television tonight at Three Rivers Stadium. Pitt is ranked number one in the country with a 10-0 record while Penn State is 16th with a 7-3 mark.

But the Nittany Lions have won six in a row and have improved tremendously since losing consecutive games to Ohio State, Iowa and Kentucky early in the season. I have to agree with Wayne Hardin, whose Temple Owls lost to both teams, that Penn State has the psychological edge. Pitt goes into the game with a possible national championship riding and that has to make the Panthers a little tight. On the other hand Penn State has nothing to loose and should be relaxed and loose. That should give them the edge they need to win.

Of course, that's assuming that an awful lot of ther things go according to plan for Penn State. Perhaps the most crucial is that the Lions contain Tony Dorsett. Actually, nobody contains Dor-sett, some teams just contain him more than others. Penn State has done a fairly good job of this the last three seasons. Dorsett gained only 73 yards as a freshman, 65 as a sophomore and 125 as a junior.

But the All-American tailback is having his best season this year. He has gained 1,724 yards for an average of 172 per game. That pushes his career total to 5.858, within striking distance of 6,000 yards, something he wants very badly. Outstanding Season Dorsett has carried the ball 300 times this season, averaging 5.7 yards per carry and 19 touchdowns. "Dorsett is one of the greatest players in college football history, says Penn State coach Joe Patemo.

If he had played in another area of the country he might have won the Heisman trophy three years in a row." But despite the fact that Dorsett is the key to Pitts offense, Patemo is wary of over concentrating on him at the expense of Pitts other offensive weapons like quarterback Matt Cavanaugh and fullback Elliott Walker. Cavanaugh is a very classy operator, says Patemo. Hes very smooth, poised and effective. He is a fine passer and runner and does what he has to do to move the football. Cavanaugh has moved it 713 yards in the air on 47 conpletions in 76 attempts and 345 yards on the ground in 71 carries.

Pitt also expects Walker to be ready after missing the last two games with a bad ankle. Walker has averaged 4.9 yards per carry and should be remembered by Penn State as the guy who broke a 37-yard touchdown run to give Pitt a 6-0 lead in last years game eventually won by Penn State 7-6. If Penn State must concentrate on stopping Dorsett from making the big play, Pitt must concentrate on stopping quarterback Chuck Fusina from making the big play. Fusina, a sophomore from McKees Rocks (near Pittsburgh) has completed 80 of 151 passes for 1,140 yards despite the fact he saw limited duty in Penn State's first three games and didnt become the number one quarterback until senior John Andress was hurt in the fourth game against Kentucky. But since then Fusina has come on strong.

Last weekend, against Miami, he completed 17 of 27 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Penn State needs a similar performance from him against Pitt if the Lions hope to upset the Panthers. Theyll likely have Fusina rolling out doing a lot of passing, says the Pitt scouting report on Penn State. Fusina has excellent receivers and a lot of them. Tightend Mickey Shuler, flankers Jimmy Cefalo and Scott Fitzkee and split ends Tom Donovan and Rich Mauti all can catch the football and run with it after they catch it.

Unlike Pitt, Penn State does not depend on one man to do the bulk of its running. In fact three tailbacks Steve Geise (533), Mike Guman (456) and Matt Suhey (4 85) have combined for 1,474 yards and fullback Bob Tor-rey has looked very good both as a runner and blocker during the latter stages of the season. Good Defense Pitt has the defense to cope with all of this. Frank Maloney of Syracuse said, Pitt has no weakness on defense and Patemo agrees with him. They are as tough against the pass as they are against the run, Patemo says.

The big man in Pitt's defense is middle guard A1 Romano, an All-American candidate. Tackle Randy Holloway, linebacker Amie Washington and, free safety Bob Jury are other standouts. Penn State will counter with a much less experienced defense which starts only two seniors linebacker Kurt AUerman and end Ron Crosby. This combined with the fact that the offense starts only four seniors gives Pitt an advantage in experience although Pitt coach Johnny Majors doesn't sound so sure. The only thing that impresses me about Penn State more than anything else, Majors says, is the young talent they have on their squad.

They have a veryfine blend of experienced people who have played fine football the past few years blending with more youth than Joe Patemo usually has. And they play with very good enthusiasm and intensity. It will take a fine effort for us to beat them. One place Pitt definitely has the advantage is kicking. Larry wider is a fine punter and Carson Long is one of the country's best place kickers and would like nothing better than to avenge last year when he missed three field goals and had what proved to be the game-deciding extra point blocked.

Although the Penn State-Pitt game does not get the publicity some of college footballs other great rivalries get, it has produced some classic struggles down through the years with more than its share of upsets. Look for another upset tonight. Staubachs four-yard touchdown run with only 20 seconds to play. The touchdown broke a 7-7 tie and the Cardinals never caught up. said Landry. They had a maximum blitz on and didn't cover our outside receiver (Barnes). White picked it up and it worked. It's an automatic call we really didn't expect a team like St. Louis to leave him open.

Coryell said That (fake punt) was the key. I admire Coach Landry for calling it on fourth down (he didnt). If it hadn't worked, we could have scored at least three points on it. But it did work. Louis Cardinals died hard And Dallas Coach Tom Landry almost died, period' The Dallas Cowboys finally baked the Cardinals 19-14 in a Thanksgiving Day National Football League epic that must have given indigetshon to millions of turkey-stuffed fans watching across the country on national television. It also apparently cooked St Louis' goose in the National Conference Eastern Division title race. Dallas is now 10-2 and the defending champions are 8-4. Washington is 7-4. Dallas is at Philadelphia.

St. Louis must play potent Baltimore Next Saturday and Washington is at the lowly New York Jets this Sunday. We've got to go out and win our last two games, take care of our business and hope Dallas can beat Washington, said St. Louis Coach Don Coryell after the heartbreaking loss. Dallas hosts Washington in the final game of the season.

Landry Signs Relief I dont know if I could go through another one," sighed Landry. There is no better football team than St. Louis in that last-minute situation. The game centered around a big Dallas play the second quarter and a last -minute St. Louis drive.

(AP) Coach Pat Dye said, It's a real shame this team is not going to a bowl, after his East Carolina squad routed Appalachian State, 35-7, Thursday night to wrap up the Southern Conference championship. North Carolina edged ECU, 12-10, and is headed for the Peach Bowl. The game marked the final appearance of East Carolina as a member of the Southern Conference. Grich Gets $1.2 Million For Signing with Angels ADDRESS CITY Mai! to: Lou Corletta, Washington Capitals Capital Centre, Landover, MD.

20786 Or call (301) 350-3400. LN I in Black or Dark Brown Smooth Gram Combination Widths BtoEEE ANAHEIM (AP) The lure of home, friends and dollars from ex-movie cowboy Gene Autry lured infielder Bobby Grich to the California Angels instead of the New York Yankees. The All-Star second baseman of the Baltimore Orioles became the third, and last, of the current free agent crop to sign with Gene Autry and his Angels. Don Baylor and Joe Rudi, from Oakland, had signed earlier. There are other free agents, but the Angels have signed their full allotment with Don Baylor, Joe Rudi and now Grich.

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner wanted Grich and argued the Angels shouldn't have a third dip into the free agent ranks, but was overruled by Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. This was probably the biggest decision I have ever had to make, said the 27-year-old second baseman who will become a shortstop with the Angels. Getting to the big leagues was a dream and this is the ultimate of dreams. Return Back Home His home is in nearby Long Beach and Grich said, It was definitely a part of my decision to play in my own back yard. I didnt accept the highest offer but you cant put a dolar sign on things like playing where the family can see you play and being with your friends.

There were no dollar figures announced, but Grich was believed to have signed a contract worth $1.2 million over five years. From New York it was reported the Yankees had offered $1.7 over six years. Baylor and Rudi each was reported to have signed for five years with the former at $875,000 and the latter at between $1.5 million and $2 million. Agent Jerry Kapstein, who handled the negotiations for all three, commented, Players that produce get paid. I hope the owners who have signed them have a fantastic year.

The Angels plan to keep Jerry Remy at second base and move Grich, a second base-man to shortstop. Confident at Shortstop He didnt appear unhappy with the swwitch, saying, "Im confident I can do the job. The last time I played a full season at shortstop was In 1971 at Rochester and I won the Rawlings Silver Glove. That award goes to the top fielding shortstop in minor league baseball. Grich also said that he asked for the importunity to become on Angel and that Kapstein set up the negotiations with Harry Dalton, general manager of the Angels.

We did not expect to sign three players from the re-entry draft, admitted Arthur Red Patterson, president of the Angels. We were satisfied with two. Then Bobby called Harry and Harry couldn't say right away that wed come up with the money because he might be at the bottom of Genes saddlebags. 1 SMOfS FOR MM Ski Packages and Sale Items available now when you need them.
