OEM 26 The Spokesman-Review May 1, 1955. BEAUTY CONFERS WITH YOUTH IN "THE PRODIGAL" Jim Cagney Most Adept at Fighting HOLLYWOOD. Actors and actresses, even before they're ever called on to engage in a movie fight, would do well to take a few solid tips from Jimmy Cagneyand learn how to hand oust screen punches as well as how to roll with an opponent's effort before they'cause damage. Playing an underworld character known as "The Gimp" in "Love Me or Leave Me," life story of songstress Ruth Etting, Cagney is about es tough as he's ever been in his 20 pugnacious years on the screen. For this movie, he engages in five separate fistic wingdings.

Actors, however, never fear facing up to Jimmy in such fight scenes because they realize he's the most adept heavy in Hollywood at faking and pulling while making them look like the real thing to the paying customer. "Every actor should be taught at the outset of his career how to simulate a punch," said Jimmy. "Otherwise, he's bound to take it on the chin himselfor hand it roughly. I spent many a month with boxers and stunt men trying to perfect the technique." "VIOLENT SATURDAY" BOOKED HERE SOON BEHIND THE BANNISTERS, Richard Egan comforts Virginia Keith in "Violent Saturday," coming soon to the Fox. It's the story of a small-town bank robbery.

He still bears the marks. "Ralph is a good friend of mine," said Jimmy, "hut he sure let me have it.

He sent me sailing across a room with a. clip on the jaw that knocked out four of my teeth. It was unintentional. He just didn't realize the force of the blow and wasn't familiar with the business of screen battling." Jeff Chandler agrees heartily with Cagneyand adds a note on what he has learned about women. Take it from 6-foot-4 Jeff, mixing it up with a woman in a screen fight is far more dangerous than tackling a male.

Having Just finished two weeks of wicked brawling with Rory Calhoun for "The Spoilers," Jeff was hacked and marked up quite a bitbut it was nothing, he insists, compared to tackling a realistic, tigerish scrapper such as Joan Crawford, as he did for an eight-minute chase-and-fight sequence in "Female on the Beach." "As everyone knows, Joan is about the greatest actress there is." declared Jeff, "but she's definitely a member of the 'realism' schoolwhich means that when she fights she's not just pretending. I was black and blue for days, to say nothing of assorted fingernail scratches and a sore scalp from all the hair pulling. "Women are so unpredictable you never know from which direction they're going to attack like fighting a wildcat. You know you're going to get hurt, no matter how you handle yourself. "Nope--if I had to choose between fighting Rory or Joan I'd have to pick Rory.

I'd have a general idea what to expect from him." 1 A GROWN CHARMER consults a little mund Purdom are featured in the familiar one in "The Prodigal," latest of the Biblical story.
