1 NEW ERA NEWS SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 2001 A-7 Elaine Pierce, probation worker Elaine M. Pierce, 60, of 148 Jubilee Road, Peach Bottom, died Thursday at home. She had been under a doctor's care. She worked 23 years as a Lancaster County adult probation supervisor, retiring this year. Mrs.

Pierce was a member of the Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ. She enjoyed crafts, cats, street rods and Elaine Pierce car shows. A member of the Recycled Teenage Cruisers, she won the Tough Gal Award from the Mid-Atlantic Street Rod Association. She was a 1959 McCaskey High School graduate. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Mahlon S.

and Mildred Barr Metzger. She was married 29 years to Donald E. Pierce. Surviving besides her husband are two brothers, Edwin husband of Mary E. Metzger of New Providence, and Ronald husband of Jane Metzger of Brownstown; and two sisters, Gloria Ann Boerger of Olathe, and Cheryl, wife of Donald Thatcher of Lancaster.

Marcia Witmer, 68, Alcoa retiree Marcia L. Witmer, 68, of 100 Fawn Meadow Court, died of natural causes Thursday at Community Hospital of Lancaster. She worked eight years as a packer for Alcoa, retiring in 1961. Earlier, she worked for Penn Dairies. Marcia Witmer Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Earl K.

and Lottie M. Lownsbery, Lottie M. Lownsbery, 83, of 160 Pittsburg Valley Road, Conestoga, died Thursday at home after a long illness. A homemaker, she worked with her husband in his furniture refinishing business. She was an active member of Highville Fire L.

Lownsbery Company and its Ladies Auxiliary. Born in Manor Township and a lifelong resident there, she was Minnie I. Linville Wilson. She was married 42 years to Corvin K. Witmer Jr.

Mrs. Witmer enjoyed knitting, flower gardening and NASCAR. Earlier, she enjoyed roller skating at Maple Grove. Surviving besides her husband are a brother, Parke D. husband of Audrey W.

Wilson, and a sister, Patricia wife of Ralph C. Herr, both of Lancaster. She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Wilson. Conestoga the daughter of the late William R. and Minnie Kendig Ressler.

Her husband, Lester R. Lownsbery, died in 1993. She is survived by two sons, Wayne E. of Bausman and Marvin husband of Betty Lownsbery of Paradise; a daughter, Sylvia wife of Larry E. Shelley of Manheim; six grandchildren; eightgrandchildren; three stepgrandsons; and a stepgreat-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Amer, Roy and John Ressler Sr. and two sisters, Edna Schopf and Ruth Witmer. Eva Kauffman, 95, homemaker Eva Margaret Long Kauffman, 95, of 434 Washington Ephrata, died of natural causes Thursday at Ephrata Community Hospital. A homemaker, she also worked 15 years as a seamstress for the former Dutchmaid, Inc. clothing factory, retiring in 1975.

Eva Kauffman Mrs. Kauffman was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, Ephrata. She also was a 68-year member of the Mary E. Moore Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Pine Grove, and Ephrata Golden Years Club. An avid quilter, she belonged to the Red Rose Quilting Club.

Born in Union Township, Lebanon County, she was a daughter of the late Adam and Adelia Klinger Long. Her husband, Elsworth Ralph Kauffman, died in 1977. She is survived by a son, Ralph husband of Barbara Belchier Kauffman of Houston; three grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. Barbara Flaud, 91, homemaker Barbara Flaud, 91, of 5671 Buena Vista Road, Gap, died of natural causes Friday at home. Her husband, Christ U.

Flaud, died in 1989. Her first husband, Amos F. King, died in 1937. Born in Gap, she was the daughter of the late Henry U. and Lizzie Stoltzfus Stoltzfus.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. (Tanya Griesemer), Ephrata, a daughter, at Ephra- Escort truck hits big rig in killing city man A Lancaster man was killed Friday in Baltimore County, Maryland, when the pickup he was driving collided with a tractortrailer rig carrying a steel bridge beam.

Harold S. Duncan, 72, of 743 College was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11:55 a.m. accident by a Maryland Medical Examiner's Office official, according to Maryland state police. Duncan was following a High Steel Structures of Lancaster tractor-trailer in a pickup truck on the outer loop of I-695 at Route 40. Victor Ressler, 31, Holtwood, was driving the High Steel tractor-trailer with an oversized load consisting of a steel bridge beam.

Duncan was following the tractortrailer as an escort vehicle for High Steel Structures, police said. Ressler approached the Route 40 interchange when a rental truck merged onto I-695 in front of the tractor-trailer. A red passenger car behind the rental truck accelerated and steered into Ressler's path police said. Ressler braked to avoid hitting the red car. Duncan, who was behind Ressler, could not stop in time and collided with the steel bridge beam.

The red car was not struck and fled the scene. It was not located Friday, police said. Richard Irwin, 70, Army veteran Richard W. Irwin, 70, of 208 Pleasure Road, died of natural causes Thursday at Lancaster Regional Medical Center. He served 22 years in the U.S.

Army, retiring in 1969. Later, he worked for Service America, Beetle Clinic and American Testing Lab. He was married 46 years to Margareta Richard Irwin Schwab Irwin. Born in Manor Township, he was the son of the late Richard M. and Martha Warner Irwin.

He enjoyed oil painting, hunting, fishing and bowling. Irwin was a member and past master of Andrew H. Hershey Lodge 764, Free and Accepted Masons. He also was a member of Royal Arch Chapter 43, Lancaster County Shrine Club, Zembo Temple of Harrisburg, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg, Scottish Rite Valley of Lancaster and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1526, Gettysburg. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Margitta, wife of Steve Henkes of Sammamish, and a sister, Elizabeth wife of Christian C.

Beck of Conestoga. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rhoda Eshleman. William Greer, 77, businessman William C. Greer 77, a businessman and retired Maryland legislator who retired to Lancaster County, died Monday of natural causes at St. Joseph's Hospital, Towson, Md.

He resided at Willow Valley Lakes Manor, 300 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street, and formerly lived in Bel Air, Md. Greer owned and operated Transportation Churchville, Md. He also worked 10 years for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources before retirement. He served two terms in the Maryland State House of Delegates. A graduate of Bel Air High School, Mercersburg Academy and the University of Maryland, he played football for Paul "Bear" Bryant and won the MacDonald Trophy at the university.

He also was a boxer and member of the track team. An avid football fan, he founded a semi-pro team and Little League team in Harford County, Maryland. He was also involved in the thoroughbred racing industry and helped to develop Fair Hill Equestrian Center, Cecil County, Maryland. He was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Forest Hill, Md.

Born in Churchville, he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Annie Ethel Osborne Greer. He was married 53 years to Mary Patricia Short Greer. Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, William C. Jr. of Brentwood, Michael Dudley of Glen Rock, Timothy Shawn Sr.

of Bel Air, and John Terrence of Burtonsville, four daughters, Betsy McSpadden of Bel Air, Patty Upham of Southern Pines, N.C., and Marianne Councell and Peggy Gusmano of Columbia, 27 grandchildren; one greatgranddaughter; four brothers, Jack of Hockessin, Gene of Carlisle, Nick of Bel Air and Bob of Wintergreen, and two sisters, Eleanor Robinson of Cockeysville, and Ann Mills of ton. Robert Rimmer, wrote 'Harrad Experiment' QUINCY. Mass.

(AP) Robert Henry Rimmer, author of the 1960s best seller "The Harrad Experiment" which explored the idea of men and women living together in a college dorm, has died at age 84. Rimmer died Aug. 1 at his home in Quincy. Rimmer's writings, preaching sex without guilt and exploring alternative models of intimacy in and out of marriage, were popular reading among the free-love generation. Harrad Experiment" also was made into a 1973 movie with a young Don Johnson as one of its stars- and a sequel.

Among his other books were "Proposition 31," which looked at legalized group marriage. A Boston native, Rimmer served in the Army during World War II and later became president of the family business, Relief Printing Corp.
