Now a professor at Millersville University, Scala spent the day with his colleague, David Ondrejik from the National Weather Service. The pair was charged with analyzing the severe weather system that plowed through central Pennsylvania Wednesday. Scala and Ondrejik determined that a strong F3 tornado, the most powerful to hit the state in six years, tore through Campbelltown. The Fujita Scale is a system that measures tornado intensity and ranks them from 0 to 5, with 5 being the most powerful.

Class 3 tornadoes sustam internal winds up to 206 miles per hour. The twister was on the ground for 10 to 15 minutes and carved a path of damage 7 12 miles long and about a quarter-mile in diameter. There were wind speeds up to 200 miles per hour, Scala said. Not too many structures can withstand that." The meteorologists based their estimates on computer modeling, storm data and visual observations. We look at how well made the structures were that were destroyed, Scala said.

"Were they brick or just vinyl siding? Was just the roof blown off or was the whole house gone? According to Lebanon County administrator Jamie Wolgemuth, at least 37 houses were destroyed, 34 homes sustained major damage and 78 homes sustained minor damage. No one died, but at least 16 people were injured. There could have been serious loss of life, Scala said. Militant groups in Iraq have taken several foreign contractors hostage, threatening to kill them if their governments did not pull their troops out or accede to other demands. Al-Zarqawis group said Wednesday it killed a Bulgarian hostage. Video broadcast on Al-Jazeera showed one of two Bulgarian hostages, later- identified as Georgi Lazov, kneeling before three masked men. Lazov was not wearing an orange jumpsuit in the footage shown, but the station declined to broadcast the rest of the video, which it said showed him being killed. His body had not been recovered.

The militants also threatened to kill a second Bulgarian hostage if the United States did not release Iraqi detainees. On Thursday, the Iraqi kidnappers of an Egyptian truck driver gave his Saudi employers 48 hours to leave Iraq or the hostage would be executed, according to the Arab TV station Al-Jazeera. An Al-Jazeera editor, who declined to be identified, told The Associated Press the station received a written statement from the Iraqi Legitimate Resistance group giving Al-Jarie TYansport the deadline. The group claims it kidnapped Alsayeid Mohammed Alsayeid Algarabawi, 42, last w'eek from a fuel truck he was driving from Saudi Arabia to the U.S. military in Iraq.

Faisal al-Naheet, whose company is a subcontractor for Al-Ja-rie Transport, told Al-Jazeera on Wednesday that Al-Jarie would stop its work in Iraq to save the hostages life. Al-Naheet said the kidnappers also demanded a $1 million ransom but the company would not pay. Elsewhere in Iraq: Saboteurs blasted a crude oil pipeline feeding into a main artery in northern Iraq, halting exports to TUrkey and directing another blow' to the countrys key industry. A rocket hit a home in Kirkuk, killing four people and wounding three, police and hospital officials said. A second rocket struck a home in a former army base used by Kurdish refugees, wounding four people.

Hundreds rallied in central Baghdad, demanding the death penalty for Saddam, who currently is in custody awaiting tidal. The largely Shiite crowd came from Baghdads Sadr City section and the southern city of Babel, where mass graves are said to have been discovered, to demand compensation for relatives killed during Saddams rule. Continued from A1 ment purportedly from al-Zarqa-wis group claiming responsibility for Wednesdays assassination of a provincial Iraqi governor it called a renegade traitor. The violence was the latest in a series of deadly attacks by insurgents since the U.S.-led coalition handed sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government. Sixty-five people have been killed since the June 28 handover, including 14 in a July 6 car bombing in Khalis.

On Wednesday, a suicide car bombing in Baghdad killed at least 10 people near Iraqi government headquarters, and insurgents assassinated a provincial governor in an ambush. The attack in Haditha, known as a stronghold of Saddam Husseins ousted regime, hit a government complex housing police, civil defense and municipal offices. The blast wounded 40 people, Interior Ministry spokesman Col. Adnan Abdel-Rahman said. Police and government officials have been targeted repeatedly by insurgents, who view them as puppets of U.S.

forces. Insurgents detonated a huge car bomb Wednesday at a checkpoint just outside the so-called Green Zone, former home to the U.S. coalition authority and current site of Iraqs interim government and the U.S. and British embassies. The blast killed 10 Iraqis, many waiting in line to apply for government jobs, the Health Ministry said.

The U.S. military 11 were killed. Hours later, insurgents tossed hand grenades and fired machine guns at a convoy transporting Nineveh Gov. Osama Youssef Kashmoula, killing him and two guards. Four attackers also were killed in the ambush north of Baghdad.

A statement posted on an Islamic Web site known for carrying extremist content said al-Zarqawis Tawhid and Jihad movement killed Kashmoula. With Gods grace, your brothers in the military wing of the Tawhid and Jihad group have chopped the head of the renegade traitor, the governor of Mosul, through a well-set trap, it said. The statements authenticity could not immediately be verified. The decapitated body was discovered by Iraqi police northwest of Beiji, 170 miles north of Baghdad. Police turned the body over to the U.S.

military for identification, and the Bulgarian government said fingerprints were sent to Bulgaria for possible identification. U.S. businessman Nicholas Berg and South Korean translator Kim Sun-il were wearing orange garments in videos showing their deaths. Their bodies were found forecasting. We can go back to our computer data and try to see: What was the state of the atmosphere that led to this event? stability usually cold air above, warm air below, Scala said. Then you need a trigger mechanism, usually surface heat. Add a change in wind patterns and you can end up with a twister.

All of those things came together in Lebanon County Scala said. He and Ondrejik plan to apply data they gathered from Wednesdays storms in their long-range nately, few people were at home. The meteorologists also' filed a National Weather Sendee report on a storm that hit Fairview Township in York County. They determined the area was struck by a weak FI tornado Wednesday afternoon. Scala said he knew by Sunday night that Wednesdays storms could be serious.

One woman remained in critical condition at Hershey Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. According to Lebanon County administrator Jamie Wolgemuth, at least 37 houses were destroyed, with 78 homes sustaining mmor damage and 34 homes major damage. More than 500 acres of farmland and nine farm buildings also were demolished, Wolgemuth said. The twister caused about $3 million in damage to farmers fields.

The National Weather Service classified the twister as a Class 3 on the Fujita Scale, a system that measures tornado intensity and ranks them from 0 to 5. Class 3 tornadoes sustain internal winds up to 206 miles per hour and can knock over trains, according to the weather services Storm Prediction Center Web site (www.spc.noaa.gov). Most of the devastation happened in and around Country Squire Estates, where many homes were leveled and others had walls tom away, exposing living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. It was worse than I could imagine, Wolgemuth said. The forces that are in play are incredible.

Christopher Torres, 10, was home with his grandmother when the tornado ripped their house apart, leaving nothing but the foundation. The wall came off and it knocked me in the head and I was knocked out, he said, showing stitches in his right ear. Christophers mother, Michelle Torres, 46, was returning from work in Harrisburg when her 67-year-old mother, Mildred Hicks, Morocco has up to 1,000 al-Qaida supporters Intelligencer Journal photos by Dan Marschka Country Squire Estates development near Campbelltown on Wednesday afternoon. She just said, Were OK, Christopher is OK, a tornado hit the house, Torres said.

She said, God wrapped his arms around us and saved us. About 25 volunteers from Torres church in Harrisburg helped clean debris from the house she had lived in for a decade. Im trying to figure out how to rebuild, she said. Im just grateful my mom and son are safe. Thats what Im focused on.

I get emotional. Mike Rocque, 47, glanced around his street. A tarp covered the missing parts of the roof on his house. Two of his neighbors homes were leveled. He then gazed beyond the housing development to a field of coni.

It had to set down where the houses were," he said. Efforts to clear the wreckage are impressive, Rocque said. The biggest thing thats kicking in is the actual cleanup, the large scale of it. Dawn Vitez, director of the Lebanon chapter of the American Red Cross, said 105 families registered for aid, including separatists as initially claimed by the government. He cited the scale of the carnage and the level of coordination 10 nearly simultaneous blasts from backpacks full of dynamite and shrapnel.

The spectacle was absolutely horrifying, Garzon said. It is probably the most shocking thing I have ever seen and I hope it is the last. Garzon said he had second thoughts when police told him in error that the explosives were a brand favored by Basque separatists, but he became convinced the attacks were linked to Islamic extremists hours later after learning that a van containing detonators, explosives and a tape with Quranic verses was found near a rail station. It was like a light bulb going on, Garzon said, referring specifically to the tape. I had no doubt whatsoever.

At that point the government had already blamed the Basque group ETA, and even after disclosing the existence of the tape it continued to insist ETA was the prime suspect. Spains then-conservative government at first backed the U.S.-led Iraq war despite fierce opposition at home, sending 1,300 troops after major combat ended. MADRID, Spain (AP) Europe's biggest terrorist threat is Morocco seething with as many as 1,000 al-Qaida adherents capable of suicide attacks and skilled at slipping through the continents southern gateway, Spains leading anti-terrorism judge testified Thursday. The impoverished kingdom just a short ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar has about 100 al-Qaida-linked cells that raise money by dealing hashish, fencing luxury cars and smuggling people into Spain, Judge Baltasar Garzon told lawmakers investigating the Madrid train bombings.

Most of the 17 suspects jailed the March 11 bombings, which killed 190 people, are Moroccan. They use every means and mechanism, and their activity can even be initially perceived as ordinary delinquency, Garzon said of the cells. In my opinion it is the gravest problem Europe faces today with this kind of terrorism. Garzon said his figures came from police and intelligence data. Morocco, too, has done its share of finger-pointing at Spain since the train bombings, but both countries have pledged to work more closely against terrorism.

Garzon said his first reaction to the train bombings was that al-Qaida was responsible, not Basque Michelle Torres, right, stands on what used to be the entrance to her home Thursday as fellow church members from Living Water Community Church volunteer to clean up the debris. Before Thursday, Vitez said she never witnessed the damage a tornado can wreak. Pictures dont tell the whole story, she said. "Its a whole lot worse than I saw on television.
