External Egg Fertilization Perfected SHREWSBURY, Mass. (AP) Dr, Mtn Chueh Chang cl the Foundation lor Experimental Research Bays a method las been developed for consistent test-tube fertilization of female eggs outside the bod)'. Dr. Chang said last night such fertilization iias been accomplished before, but not consistently. Tlic scientist, a native of China, said experiments leading to development of process were started In 1951.

Working with rabbits, he determined that fertilization outside the body could be accomplished consistently only when the sperm cells were removed fitter being emplanled naturally in the reproductive tract ol the female, lie then used the male cells to fertilize ova taken from another female. In the process, he said, the sperm cell undergoes a i chemical changes which make test-tube fertilization consistent. Technical laboratory problems confronted the foundation during the development of the process, and It li tlill effective only 50 per cent ol the time, Dr, Chang laid.
