CTA Recommendations Made In Convention SAN FRANCISCO Califor- nia Teachers Association has recommended sweeping changes in the selection of county boards of education and county school superintendents.

The CTA statewide legislative committee, which held a two-day session here recently, adopted policy for a combination of laws and constitutional amendment which would provide for the election of county boards of education rather than the present procedure of appointment and for the appointment of county superintendents who are now elected. Policy was made that the association take no action on legislation which would provide for the reading of the Bible in public schools. Two years ago, CTA vigorously opposed a bill making Bible reading mandatory. That measure died in committee. The bill now being considered would make Bible reading permissible.

Committee opinion was that teachers should not spearhead opposition to reading of the Bible and be made the butt of criticism from segments of the state who misinterpreted CTA action of 1953.
