1 II "IT I f9 I I I I I I II I I -w-w-r Aug. 30, 1976 THE SUN-TELEGRAM A-l 1 4 Probe of private detectives murder has filmland uneasy Marilyn Beck' Touching up her hairdo to Vesco just last year. Before too long, the tangled web could start to unravel. Little by little. There are many inside Hollywood and out who are afraid it will.

Ann-Margret will be one pooped performer by the time she concludes her Las Vegas Hilton gig tonight. The show itself, which features 18 costume changes (and which has been earning her standing ovations from SRO crowds) is enough to create exhaustion. And Ann, who has collapsed from overwork on more than one occasion, isn't leaving herself much time for relaxation. She's been spending many of her off hours rehearsing for her guest stint on Perry Como's NBC special, which is shooting in Las Vegas. And before the week is out, she will have spent two full days in front of Perry's cameras before rushing back to get in makeup for her show.

Without any time off for rest or recreation, Ann will be off to London the day following her Hilton closing. The day after that, she's scheduled to report on the set of L'niversal's "Beau Geste" in Ireland. And if she can rush through production of that film on schedule, she will come back to the I'nited States, just in tune for an encore engagement at the Vegas Hilton in November. Peter Fonda says he's warring with the leaders of several Boy Scout troups who are upset over the sight of American flags being used as curtains in Peter's Hollywood offices. A makeup artist works on the hair of actress Linda Blair, 17, a native of Westport, at New York's Pennsylvania Station prior to filming of a scene for the movie "Exorcist II: The Heritic." Blair starred in the first Exorcist film.

The sequel also stars Richard Burton. Despite rumors, Bert Parks host Miss America pageant will again "Bell, Book and Candle," the pilot NBC is screening Sept. 8, is highly thought of as a future series, but not involving the cast you'll see portraying the characters based on those in the 1959 movie which starred Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart. Yvette Mimieux plays the Novak role in this pilot make a year ago, and which is being shown merely to recover some production costs. But after network and studio officials saw this finished work, it was decided they wanted something a "little closer to an 8 o'clock kind of show," says producer Bruce Lansburg.

The Mimieux pilot is more of a romantic comedy in tone. But with Karen Valentine now cast as a Greenwich Village art gallery owner, who happens to be a witch, in the remake pilot which hasn't gone into production yet, they'll have another "family hour" comedy prospect. A NON STOP HIGH ENERGY FREEDOM his most memorable moments and the Los Pampas Gouchos of Argentina round out the guest list for the three-day taping. "And we also have the Bare Touch of Vegas group," adds producer Stephen Pouliot, without cracking a smile. "It's important to list them because we had to make an extra dip into our show budget.

We had to buy them brassieres." Pauliot laughed and clarified, saying the Bare Tocuh is one of the most incredible disco-beat dance acts's he's seen. Since the five girls perform topless it was necessary to invest in a "cover" for their appearance on TV, even though Como's show is slotted after the "family hour." Little does a new routine about the hazards of Vegas and joins Como in a duet, impersonating five people Como's never sung with before doing Como's hits. Ann-Margaret does her "Shop-Around" number from her act. Ray Charles wrote a special number for the finale titled "Career," in which film clips of Como's, Little's and Ann-Margret's early show business days are incorporated. After this, Como hits the road again for another location show, the Austrian Alps.

OUTRAGEOUS! INSANE! while playing up the 50 contestants, who are the real stars of the show. Plus, and it doesn't show on the tube, Bert instills a sense of confidence in these kids that you wouldn't believe. He puts them at ease. It's an invaluable consideration. "I'm sure other star emcees, a glamor type, would be quite an attraction but not on our stage." After such exotic locales as Hawaii, Mexico and Sun Valley, Perry Como's next special emanates from what is almost a comedown, Las Vegas.

However, his NBC show of Sept. 11 benefits from a luxurious site, the Las Vegas Hilton. The change in backgrounds is for a number of reasons. Como's been touring Eastern cities working hotel and nightclub rooms the past three months and the Hilton is his last stop. And he's never done a TV show out of Las Vegas.

Como is following Ann-Margaret, who is one of his guests, into the Hilton's showroom, where she's currently starring. It's the first time they've worked together on'TV. Richardson. Richardson (currently facing six years in federal prison after a recent conviction of a $25 million stock fraud) was reportedly a close friend and associate of Hall's and has been linked with Watergate figure Robert Vesco.

In his possession when police, armed with a search warrant, swooped down on his apartment were nearly 50 tapes. They were confiscated as evidence in the case. Burbank Police Lieutenant Al Madrid, in charge of the murder investigation, said, "It will be a while yet until we are able to study all of Richardson's tapes to know just what bearing, if any, they have on the case," In addition to those tapes, there are some 200 recorded messages that Hall left behind, and that were dis- I Questions I still enjoy Lome Greene in those "Bonanza reruns, but I wish be would get a new series. Any chance? T.E., Greenville, S.C. Lome is talking to producers about two new series possibilities.

One, a western, will depend on how well the West (in terms of other shows) fares during the coming season. Meanwhile, you will be able to see Greene in an NBC mini-series a six-and-a-half hour serializiation of the best-selling novel, "The and an ABC mini-series a 12-hour serialization of a "Novel for Television" entitled "Roots." They reportedly contain the names of high-level film and business figures and may well turn out to implicate many people in everything from illicit drug use to blackmail and prostitution. Already called for questioning about people involved in the case has been Eddie Fisher. Madrid will not specify the nature of the information he's thus far uncovered from the Richardson tapes.

However, from other sources, this reporter has learned that Richardson's link with Hall extended to Vesco, who is a fugitive living in Costa Rica and is under federal indictment on charges stemming from a secret $200,000 contribution he made to Richard Nixon's 1972 campaign. Richardson has reportedly revealed that Hall, a "bugging" expert, had debugged Vesco's office in the Bahamas in 1972 and that he acted as an emissary from Richardson Answers "Emergency!" gets more thank-you letters than any other TV series? F.A., Albany, Ga. That is a realistic claim. Shows like "Marcus Welby" and "Medical Center" have also pulled a great many letters of appreciation, but there is little doubt that "Emergency!" is No. 1.

That show gets letters from parents, from children, from teachers, from fellow doctors, fellow nurses, fellow para-medics, fellow firemen, etc. At NBC, those switchboard operators literally dread the nights when "Emergency" is preempted, no matter how legitimate the reason. bjsriKM Si I St San Bernardino 88b 64(16 "POSSE" CINEMA 2 Where were you in 62? Clint Eastwood, incidentally, will likely be distressed when he learns of Fonda's pet name for him: "Clint Killgood." isn't exactly a fan of Clint's shoot-'em-up genre of picture. Valerie Perrine, ho's just wrapped up "Windfall'' for 20th Century Fox, says she'd like to do a Western next, "and do all my own stunts. I've been horseback riding since 1 was nine." One costuming stunt that should be something to see would be Valerie squeezing herself into one of those old lace-up corsets, because, as she describes it: "When I pinch myself in like that.

Well, don't you believe it. Mrs.

Parks' little boy with the bright shiny teeth will once more be center stage and in good voice to sing you know what. The 56th annual "Miss America Pageant" (no, Bert hasn't done all of them) originates' from its home Atlantic City, N.J., over NBC Sept. 11. There have been very few changes in staging the girl-watjchers' delight in recent years, aside from a sort of loose working theme to tie it all together. "There isn't too much you can do to put a new face on it," agrees Albert A.

Marks executive producer, as he's discovered in the past. "If you try to change too much, the public feels cheated. Tampering with an annual spectacle (22 years on NBC) might cause us to lose the basic 'Cinderella' story it has." Marks relates one example. One year he was "at war" with the composer of "There She Is, Miss America," sometimes referred to as the Bert Parks' anthem. Marks was determined not to use the song.

And when the word got around, he recalled, "You'd have though I'd desecrated the 'Star Spangled Getting back to the theme, this year it will be "It's Time," suggesting it is time to look ahead and let the 200 past years take care of themselves. Marks has some film clips showing last year's contestants touring abroad with the USO, and this year's girls aboard the Freedom Train and the Coast Guard's magnificent tall ship, The Eagle, docked in Atlantic City. All this, or course, is to explain that the pageant is an ongoing thing and not just an occurrence on a given Saturday night Phyllis George, a former Miss America, making her fifth appearance on the show, together with Debbie Ward, a former Miss Louisana, will co-host with the omnipresent Bert Parks. In view of Phyllis' growing image with rival CBS, was NBC a bit put out by this? "No, and I wouldn't care if they were," says Marks. "We do our own packaging, which means we put the people on the show we want.

We insist on aesthetic control. Besides, Phyllis is extremely articulate and confoundedly good looking." But are you sure Bert Parks will be there? "You know, it's funny," Marks concluded with a chuckle. "People have said to me for some time now, why in the world do you stay with Bert Parks? "Well, first of all, his name's become synonymous with the pageant. Second, when you go looking at the available people to host this show, it is extremely difficult to find one who can carry it off and play himself down MOVIE RATING GUIDE aii ami k4mnm4 PAIIMTAL fiUIDANf I UAGf 1TID i lltTtltTIOUNOII 17 NOOMUMMIH CT fpOGliiTife Technicolor' 1:00, 5:15, 9:30 PLUS SECOND HIT "APPLE DUMPLING GANG" 3:15,7:30 TWILITE 4:455:15 This Is The One You've Been Waitin' For Mv friend and I ran lire you a time vou' nner Jnrtet.
