Member of Associated Press, Idaho Allied Dailies. Official newspaper, Illy of Burley, County of Cassia; Idaho. Chamber BURLEY New tax changes was the topic of discussion Monday, Feb. 8. at the Burley Area Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon meeting at Price's Cafe.

The guest speaker was Ron Luke, a representative from the Internal Revenue Service Office in Twin Falls. "The reason for the changes in the tax laws was to make them fairer and simpler, but only time will prove if this is true," he said. Among changes are two tax rates going into effect with 1988 returns 15 percent and 28 percent; in 1987 there are five tax rates, according to Luke. During 1987 all employees were asked to fill out and file with their employors a new W-4 form. All dependent children claimed on a tax form must have a social security number.

Parents are urged to obtain the numbers for their children at once. In another change, children who are claimed as an exemption on their parents' tax form cannot claim exemptions for themselves when filing their own forms. Other items he mentioned: Deductions for Individual Retirement Accounts have not been phased out; union dues deductions are at two percent; long term capital gains are now reported as income; if contributions are to be claimed, they must be itemized; "travel and education expenses are not totally gone, but and income averaging is gone. "Hopefully more people will be into the taxing system, time will tell," stated Luke. A few questions were ask from the floor.

The speaker was introduced by Steve Westf all, first vice president. Teresa McKinster, "president, welcomed members and introduced William Shaffer, new chamber executive director. Dave Gibbons, Burley City Councilman, asked for input on the Downtown Burley Beautification proposal which was announced last week. The plans are available for review at the mayor's office. for a series of primaries in Maine, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming and South Carolina from Feb.

23 to March 5 before heading into "Super Tuesday," March 8, a day on which 20 states, including Idaho, will hold primaries and after which, 42 percent of the Democrats and 51 percent of the Republican delegates will have been picked for the conventions. "I think he (Dukakis) will do well in Idaho," Evans said. "We've got a good organization going on a statewide basis and as a result of those energies, we'll anticipate winning in Idaho bh Super Tuesday Evans said Dukakis' daughter-in-law, the wife of his son, John, will appear in Boise on Saturday to stump for the Massachusetts governor at the annual Democratic Party fundraiser, the Jefferson-Jackson Banquet. On the GOP side of the Iowa action, where Sen. Robert Dole won a large victory with 37 percent of the vote while Pat Robertson was second at 25 percent and Bush was third at 19 percent, Evans said he was surprised by the.

vice president's third-place showing. "I was surprised that Vice President Bush didn't come in at least second place. Robertson beat him out for second place, and that gives us all and we know his cam For those who care the very most, contributions to the Cassia Health Care Foundation would be a lasting memorial for your loved one. "I think that everybody was surprised he could carry as well as he did coming from an urban backgrond," Evans said, adding Dukakis is "taking up the challenge of understanding the problems of agriculture and addressing the issues and offering strong support of the family farm." Evans said he had been carefully watching Gephardt's and Simon's effort- in Iowa and was not surprised.
