Mary Kellfiley Gives Anual Piano Students' Awards Announcement of season piano students' awards was made by Mrs. Mary Keithley Friday, fop honors going to Marlene Freltag, high school senior, as top ranking student from Mrs. Keithley's studio in the National Piano Playing auditions, and to Betty Joan Taylor, as the student making the most progress during the year. A composers scrap-book was the teachers prize to Marlene for a superior rating in the Social Music Test of the NPPA, while she received a certificate and pin from the National College of Musicians. The awards were presented by Mrs.

Keithley at a social music party at her studio Sunday, when Marlene recorded songs and piano numbers. The album of recordings were presented to her as a graduation present from Mrs. Keithley. She was assisted by Peggy Peterson, soprano; and Melvin Brown and Joon Bonnet, tenor and alto duet. Betty Jean receives the annual award made to the student making the most progress, a season Philharmonic ticket.

The following students received certificates and pins from the National Piano Playing auditions; Social music test: Marlene Freitag. Brian Greenwood; national honor roll: Betty Jean Taylor, Dana Wesche, Katheryn Keithley, Sharon Boyle, Cynthia Keithley; state honor roll: Diane Baker; district honor roll: Shirley Jones and Claudia Keithley. Morse Olmstead Is Re-Elected Methodist Board Chairman Here Morse Olmstead was re-elected chairman of the official hoard of the First Methodist church at its first meeting for the new fiscal year Wednesday evening. R. Cesmat was reelected secretary. Ernest N. Stafford will represent the local congregation at the Southern California Arizona annual conference which convenes at Redlands university, Redlands. June 15.

Bishop Gerald II. Kennedy will preside over the conference for the first time since being assigned to this Episcopal area. Dr. Roy L. Smith, for many years an outstanding leader in the denomination, will be the special speaker at the evening meetings of the conference which will close June 21.

STORY OF BEAR SET FOR LIBRARY HOUR On the Saturday morning story hour at the Escondido Public library', youngsters will enjoy the new' story of The Bear on the Balcony by Ruth Helm. This is the tale of a small boy, Johnny, and a bear named Humphrey. The bear comes to sptfiuT the summer with Johnny, and on the balcony outside the playroom. Problems arise when it is difficult to find enough cinnamon buns and honey for the bear. Other stones will be Castle in the Sand by Bettina, and more about Wilbur, the pig, and the spider.

Story hour begins at 10 o'clock, according to Martha Roick, librarian. president, Penny Mitchell; secretary, Patty Padelford; treasurer. Jimmy Ann Phillips, and historian, Maty E. Rodriquez. Seven candles representing unity, sportsmanship, sendee, integrity, sincerity, honesty and loyalty were lit by the incoming officers in the ceremony.

1952 53 president, Judy Fox, awarded 51 girls block letters, and 20 girls, received captains' stars for hockey and basketball. Miss Cook announced winners of team trophies and individual awards as: Janice Beleal, captain of the Junior Red Hockey team, the Kay Olive Beleal Memorial Hockey Itophy as her team had an undefeated season in hocky; Penny Mitchell, the Bower Jewelry perpetual trophy, for the Holiday basketball tournament, won by the sophomores; Marlene Frietag, the Interclass basketball trophy, on behalf of the Junior Black which she captained an undefeated season. Honor awards were received by Kathy O'Hara and Barbara Burt. Awards for outstanding sendee went to Judw Fox, Penny Mitchell and Barbara Burt. The association paid tribute to Mary Iloughtelin.

Guests from out of town included Mrs. Mary Jean Coffman, GAA advisor from Fallbrook and their GAA President Joan Garwood. More than 7,000 ships transporting troops and supplies to the Far East were loaded and unloaded at army-operated ports in Japan in the past two years. MR. and MRS.

Potter Installs Oceanside Carlsbad Soroptimist Officers Mrs. Gladys Potter, 1952-53 president of the Soroptimists club and president of the Presidents Council of this area, was installing officer at the Ocean-side Carlsbad ceremonies Wednesday evening. She installed Edith Lipman of Oceanside as president of the club. Six Escondido members accompanied Mrs. Potter.

They were Ruby Bolin, Marion Ingraham, Mildred Osbourne, Dorothy Kinchan, Josephine Gunn, president-elect, and Elizabeth Skelly. Other officers of the Carlsbad ciub installed were: Vice president, Hilda Whitmore; recording secretary, Bertha Sklar, corresponding secretary, Nellie Ricotta; treasurer, Jane Stauff, and board of directors. Doreen Thomas and Eugene Meregillano will be married June 20 in an eight clock ceremony at the Foursquare church.

Rev. Evelyn Thompson is to perform the rites. Miss Thomas Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred D.

Thamos and her fiance is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Meregillano. All are of Escondido.

Following the ceremony, guests will be received in the Christian Training school. Maid of honor for Miss Thomas will he her fiance's sister, Gloria Meregillano. Best man will be Robert Simpson. Scandinavians Have Kretstevne Picnic Krctstcvne picnic for Scandinavians was hosted recently by Norge lodge 00 of Vista and Val-hall lolge 25 of San Diego in Live Oak park. Some 225 persons attended. Highlight of the program was Norwegian music presented by the Norwegian male chorus of Los Angeles. Paul Knudsen of San Diego and Ludwig Yttergaard of Fall-brook were co-chairman of the committee consisting of Mr. and Mrs. John S.

Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. John Slotten of San Diego, Mrs. Knudsen, Mr. and Mrs.

Charles Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. Lars Soyland, Mrs. Yttergaard all of Vista and others. Exports of southland oranges in 1953 are expected to be the greatest in the past ten years.
