Lyndsay Reichert paced the serving game, going 18-for-18. She also had 12 kills, along with Injury to keep Jones out of 49ers ATHLETICS From Page IB leader in the wild-card race, won 4-1 at Toronto. That left Seattle 3' 2 games behind Texas and 22in back of Baltimore. Unless the Mariners can pull within a halfgame of either team by Sunday, there won't be any need for a makeup game at Cleveland. But Griffey was not yet ready to concede.

Are we out of it?" he asked rhetorically. Until (manager) Lou (Piniella) comes In here and has a meeting wishing us all good luck iii the off-season, it's not over. Im packed to go to Cleveland. I have a suit all ready." The Mariners, who have lost four of five after going on a 10-game winning streak to pull back into playoff contention, were somber after their loss to the Athletics who scored four runs in the eighth Inning to deepen Seattles late-season stumble. A sullen Norm Charlton, who allowed three of those eighthinning runs, sat in a comer of the clubhouse and nursed a beer as he spoke softly of his failure.

We had the game won right there. I came in and screwed it up," Charlton said. I didnt do my job and we lost the game." After scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead, the Mariners gave the lead right back. Mike Jackson opened the Inning by walking Mark McGwire and striking out Teny Steinbach. Charlton (4-7) walked left-handed pinch-hitter Matt Stairs and Scott Spie-zio loaded the bases with an Infield single off the glove of third baseman Dave Hollins.

Charlton then struck out Ernie Young, but forced in a run by walking Mike Bordick. Tony Batista followed with a two-run single to right on an 0-and-2 count to knock out Charlton i and give Oakland the lead. Rafael Carmona came in and threw a pitch behind the head of Scott Brosius for a wild pitch and the seventh Oakland run. Only 10 of the 22 pitches Charlton threw were for strikes. I walk a lefty and I walk a guy like Bordick.

Thats absolutely ridiculous. And when I go 0-and-2 on somebody, they should be a strikeout, not just an out," Charlton said. It wasn't the hit that killed me, it was the walks before. The Mariners had rallied in the eighth on Griffeys 49th homer, an RBI infield single by Hollins and Dan Wilson's run-scoring groundout. Bill Taylor (6-3), who gave up the last two of those runs, ended up as the winner by getting the final six outs for the As.

Losing in Oakland is nothing new for the Mariners. They are 36-89 in Oakland, their worst mark in any city, with three games remaining this weekend at the Coliseum. Terry Steinbachs first career inside-the-park homer gave the As a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Steinbachs 34th homer bounced off the fence, just beyond the reach of leaping right fielder Jay Buhner. Buhner slammed into the wall and tumbled to the ground, spraining his right ankle, as the ball rolled back into mid-right field.

Second baseman Joey Cora finally retrieved the ball as Steinbach chugged around third. Outdoor Columnist Grizzly Island has multiple uses WE HAVE MANY wildlife management areas in Northern California. These areas are managed by the Department of Fish and Game for multiple use. Grizzly Island, near Fairfield, is such an area of multiple use. There is fishing all year long, closed periods during the limited-drawing elk hunt and special daily or season permits, A and for duck hunting.

The remainder of Grizzly Island is a wildlife preserve. Grizzly Island is a classic example of a well run all-use wildlife area. As the Department of Fish and Game acquires more and more property, its resources get stretched. The Napa Sonoma Marshes wildlife area, which was very successfully operated as a type wildlife area last year, has been changed to a type area for the 1996-97 hunting season, which means that no permits or passes are required. You really need a boat to access this wildlife area, which includes Napa and Sonoma county marshland, American Canyon, Coon Island, old salt ponds, Dutchman Slough, Hu-ichica Creek, Napa River, Ringstrom Bay, Tolay Creek, White Slough and Wingo management units.

Its located west and north of Highway 37 near the city of Vallejo, east and south of Highway 121 near the cities of Sonoma and Napa. Hunt days are Satur-' days, Sundays and Wednesdays. Huntable species include waterfowl, snipe, rabbits, pheasants and doves. No dogs are allowed March 2 through Jan. 30, which is the breeding season.

The loss was only the Dodgers ninth in their last 33 games, and just the third in their last 17 home games. We just couldn't get any offense going tonight," Dodgers manager Bill Russell said.

Cal coach Steve Marlucci said he hoped to maintain Cals offensive balance despite the loss of Smith, who rushed for 400 yards in three games. game Sunday injury," Seifert said. Yet my understanding is it would be overstating it to say it might be season ending. Team doctor Michael Dillingham had yet to see the X-rays, so Seifert had not consulted with him.
