STATE PAGE 21 15CRANT0N, PA MONDAY, APRIL 12, 1999 fflxt tranton (Brae IL STANDINGS Alvarez Can Play in U.S., Works on Canada RASM CHCF3 KD FALL!" 3.. 9 SUNDAY: The final game of the Red Barons four-game series with the Pawtucket Red Sox was rained out Sunday and will be played Aug. 17, as part of a twi-night double-header beginning at 6 p.m. I TODAY: The Red Barons are scheduled to open a two-game home series with Rochester at 7 before heading to Ottawa to open their first road trip. I NOTES: Pawtucket Red Sox shortstop Chris Snopek, whose father grew up in South Scranton but later moved to Kentucky, was l-for-10 and scored two runs in the three-game series against the Red Barons.

Today is the first of the Red Barons' new family'nights. A family of four will receive four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas, four bags of chips and a game program for $20. Billy Brewer, who is working his way back from elbow surgery last year, will start the second game of the series Tuesday and is expected to throw three innings before turning the ball over to Barry Johnson. with me, and everything was all right" Alvarez didn't play anywhere last season, and last played Triple-A with Nashville in 1994. He batted .215 with three home 14 RBI and eight doubles in 87 games.

Considered solid behind the plate, Alvarez bat .202 in 79 games with Double-A Birmingham in 1997, hitting three home runs with 10 doubles and 23 RBI. "He's always been a good catch-and-throw type guy, and he does a pretty good job," Red Barons manager Marc Bombard said. "He puts pretty good fingers down and he's energetic you don't want a dead body back there. He's got an idea what he's doing. The Phillies did a nice job getting him." Now the Phillies have a decision to make.

Alvarez is expected to come off the temporarily inactive list once he receives his Canadian visa, and Marc Ronan and Adan Millan already have been playing. Millan stands as the person most likely to face a move, and on top of that, Bobby Estalella is expected to join the team some time next week to begin his rehabilitation program from off-season shoulder surgery. "He's going to be activated when he gets his visa, unless I hear different," Bombard said. "We have to make a decision." Bombard sais he will talk to director of minor league instruction Lee Elia and director of minor league operations Steve No-wortya about the team's options. Alvarez is expected to stay with the Red Barons as a backup, but already he has his eyes on the future, hoping to turn his 12 years of professional baseball into a coaching job once his playing days are over.

He spent last year coaching at baseball clinics in Venezuela and would like to earn a coaching spot one day in the United States. "For the future after I leave baseball, I'd like to stay in the game and coach," Alvarez said. "Especially now, things are not so good with the government in Venezuela. Right now it's a bad situation with the economy and all that stuff. "If I get a chance to live in the United States one day, I'd do it I' love being here." dian visitors visa, but he expects it to arrive from the Venezuelan consulate in New York Tuesday, in time for the Red Barons' road trip to Ottawa and Rochester.

"I'm pretty excited to be here, and I'm anxious to get in a game," Alvarez said. "The only thing they had to do was look and see if I'd gotten permission from the Phillies. BY RANDY YANOSHAK THE SCRANTON TIMES The second rainout in three days meant a hasty end to the Red Barons' season-opening series with the Pawtucket Red Sox Sunday. It also officially marked the first day of Clemente Alvarez's Red Barons career.

The Red Barons catcher and Venezuela native had been wading through the bureaucracy of international immigrations, but re-joined the Red Barons Saturday night after spending most of the previous week in Caracas, Venezuela, getting his work visa io he can play professional baseball in the United States. Alvarez, 29, is a 12th-year veteran who signed as a free agent with the Phillies during spring training. He had been invited to Phillies camp as an assistant coach, which allowed him to travel to the United States on a CLINIC i FROM PAGE 19 sometimes." He talked about the time he and another coach got into it during a drill. "I knocked the hell out of him," he said. "Or at least that's how I remember it." At 72, Paterno stays out of the trenches these day, but his assistants soldier on.

Defensive line coach Joe Sarra recruited a guy from the front row and got down on all fours to demonstrate a blocking drill. His hose in the coach's chest, Sarra showed over and over how a player should get his hands under an offensive lineman's pads. "Poom! Poom! Poom!" he shouted after every move. I "You tell the kids Penn State does it it gives you instant credibility," said Jack Jones, a 30-yfcar-old assistant coach for Triton Regional High School in By-, field, Mass. He and Todd Pierce have made the seven-hour drive from Massachusetts every year for a decade.

Cashman, another of the demands from the Senate. The board said the appraisal list is good for this year, but will change it for upcoming years to be more goal-oriented. The process for evaluating Cashman is supposed to take place no later than its May meeting, which is scheduled for May 26-27 at the Quality Inn and Suites in Chambersburg. NEED FOR CHANGE Although the state team championships got off the ground with Bald Eagle Area and Brookville claiming titles last month, Lom-bardi told the Board of Control during his update of the state's wrestling tournaments that there are many places to improve.

"The timing, reflecting the concern of the schedule and post-regular season weight determination," were the items Lom-bardi hit upon. The effects of the weight determination rule, which went into event when the postseason began in each respective district, was nowhere more apparent than in District 2. West Scranton sat six regulars for the District 2 Dual Meet Championships to allow its wrestlers try to cut weight for the district's individual championships two weeks later. The Invaders became the first Lackawanna League team ever to win a district team title by beating Wyoming Valley West by 7Vfe points in the individual championships. Northampton won the District 11 dual-meet title, but sent essentially a junior varsity team to the state event, preferring to prepare its wrestlers for individual competition.

DISTRICT 2 NOTES All four officers were reelected during the District 2 annual meeting last week at Edge-wobd-in-the-Pines. Dunmore superintendent Charlie Mecca will return for his second year as district chairman. Vice chairman Phil Latinski of Wilkes-Barre GAR, secretary Tim McGinley of Wyoming Valley West and treasurer Frank Victor of Hazleton Area will also return. The district accepted the resignation of Annette Barbini, girls' sports representative, effective at the end of the school year. The resignation leaves District 2 without its two longest-running committee members.

Barbini, the Wilkes-Barre Coughlin athletic director, served on the committee for 17 years. Bob Spagna, the officials' representative for 16 years, announced his resignation earlier. The district decided to send a letter of apology to the Wyoming Valley West School District after security personnel refused to let two of the school's cheerleaders into a game at Misericor-dia because it had reached a sellout with 1,400 fans. But when injuries thinned the Phillies' catching ranks at the upper level and the Phillies signed him to be a reserve catcher for the Red Barons, Alvarez had to return to Venezuela to process the paperwork for his work visa.

Alvarez faces one other hurdle: He can't yet travel to Canada. He hasn't yet received his Cana Mike Weber, a high school football Stadium Saturday. Weber was one this weekend. lagher said. "He puts our education before swimming, and that is the way I want it." Gallagher said she will major in health and exercise sciences.

Gallagher will bring an impressive list of credentials to the pool. She captured her first district gold medal as a junior in the 100-yard freestyle. This year, she successfully defended the title and added a gold medal in the 100 butterfly. "I know in college I will spend less time in the pool," Gallagher said. "Instead of practice in the morning, we'll do some weight training. The coach also holds separates practices for sprinters and distance swimmers; I think I will like that a lot better." West Scranton coach Dave HORSE RACING Bulldogs seeking alternatives to the proposed Northeastern Football Conference. STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS Berwick might bolt its new football conference before it plays its first league game. The Bulldogs are scheduled to move into the new Northeastern Football Conference, a merger of the Wyoming Valley Conference and Lackawanna League, for the 2000 season.

The new league has decided to schedule all 10 regular-season games for conference teams within the league. That leaves no room for non-league games and has left Berwick coach George Curry unhappy. Curry recently approached the Berwick school board to seek a new conference if the Northwestern Football Conference did not allow teams to schedule games outside of the conference. Another Wyoming Valley Conference team, Pottsville, has already indicated it is prepared to leave the WVC to join the East Penn Conference, which lost several members a year ago to the Mountain Valley Conference. Berwick has not approached the East Penn Conference, the home of 1998 PIAA Class AAA champion Allentown Central Catholic, a familiar playoff rival of the Bulldogs.

But at least one school board member, Lew Dellegrotti, said, "Could you imagine how entertaining that would be to have Berwick and Allentown Central Catholic meet on a regular basis?" SOCCER OT Overtime will have a new meaning to high school soccer teams in the state during the 1999-2000 school year. The PIAA Board of Control passed a motion that will alter overtime, turning to "sudden victory" rather than playing two 10--minute periods. Regular-season games will end with the first goal scored in overtime under the new rules. In the postseason, the teams could play two 10-minute periods and two five-minute periods all with "sudden victory" before going to a penalty kick shootout procedure. ON THE BOOKS The PIAA has put some rules it has been following on the record for inclusion in next year's handbook.

Procedural standards for both district committee hearings and appeal hearings were typed out and approved by the Board on Saturday, along with its policy concerning boys and girls participating and practicing together in interscholastic athletics. One of the complaints from the Senate Special Committee on Interscholastic Athletics has been the lack of a formal process for PIAA proceedings.
