LANCASTER, NEW ERA LOCAL NEWS B-2 WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 1 997 County revokes grant to private group for trail Career in theater by Ad Crable New Era Staff Writer FAST the money in 1993 and had extended it several times since then. But the money was never used as FAST struggled with opposition to the public trail idea. Recently, seven municipalities about to take over the line told the commissioners they would preserve the center of the corridor as open space only if the FAST money was yanked. Some of the officials oppose the trail for privacy reasons. The environmental commu nity is going to be very concerned by this, William Ebel, a Manheim Township commissioner and longtime trail supporter said at the County Commissioners meeting.

But all three commissioners said the countys main goal of preserving the rail corridor as open will be met. Commissioner Paul Thibault said the funding demand was granted in the spirit of furthering intermunicipal cooperation. Seven southern Lancaster County townships have gotten their way: a private group will lose $250,000 in county funds to develop a recreation trail on a 23-miie rail line. The County Commissioners unanimously voted this morning not to extend the grant to the Friends of the Atglen-Susquehan-na Trail. The commissioners had given Sludge forum slated for Friday at Farm Home Center Continued from B-1 year.) But when I met Engle at Penn Manor last week, she struck me as rather serene and peaceful.

She didn't seem overwhelmed with all the activities going on around her, noting with a smile that somewhere in there I'll find time to do my laundry. Clearly, shes got a sense of humor. When I asked her what her biggest flaw is, Engle said shes too hard on herself and too much of a perfectionist. I think I have a fear of being vulnerable, she explains. And I think my perfectionism is woven into that.

I hate not being in control, which is weird because I'm a performer. In acting class last winter, her teacher told her she was coasting using her talent to avoid digging down any deeper. She knows he was right. I guess I'm starting that psychological journey of acting, Engle says. She once focused her perferc-tionism totally on her school work (until that darned came along, she had a 4.0).

Now, shes centering on acting. If Im not nailing it every time, I get mad at myself, Engle says. But being tough on herself has served Engle well. This year, in addition to starring in the school play Leader of the Pack, she won a Gold Key writing award for her short play, Deuces Wild, and directed and wrote a childrens play, called Laugh A Lot, which toured Penn Manor schools. That production was the result of an independent theater course she designed for herself since shed exhausted all the other theater courses Penn Manor had to offer.

Laugh A Lot was a cheesy little musical, Engle says with a smile. But the kids thought it was hysterical. They were so into the show we had to calm them down, which I guess was good. It marked Engles first official stab at writing and directing. While she found she liked directing (I'm a control freak, so I kind of liked it.) she wasn't too keen on writing.

Department of Environmental Protection; Tim Lutz, a West Chester University geology professor; and Jay Snyder, superintendent of Ephratas sewage-treatment plant. We need to hear all sides about sewage sludge disposal, said Anne Goeke, president of the Lancaster Heritage and Environment Alliance. She said the group has not taken a position for or against sludge disposal on land. The alliance is made up of 12 local groups and organizations. For more information about the forum, call Goeke at 394-911 0.

The Lancaster Heritage and Environment Alliance has scheduled state, national and local experts on sludge disposal for the forum, to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Farm Home Center, 1381 Arcadia Road. Questions are invited after the forum. Speakers will include: Hugh Kaufman, well-known whistleblower at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Dr.

Stanford Tackett, an Indiana University chemistry professor and critic of land application of sludge; Tom Sweeney, of the state FUNERAL NOTICES Funeral Invitations 101 Deborah Engle I thought it was too exposing it was almost a naked experience. It was harder to take rejection on a piece I'd written than a performance. It was almost a personal attack. But then she wrote Deuces Wild, about two people on a balcony who talk themselves into a relationship, which won her the Scholastic Gold Key award. I kind of warmed up to writing, Engle concedes.

Once I get an idea I can run with it. Last summer Engle was part of the ensemble of Pieces, an antiviolence play that was put together under the direction of Barry Kornhauser and the Fulton Opera House. A group of teens from throughout Lancaster wrote the show with Kornhauser and toured in a number of schools and at Barnes Hall. Pieces was a lesson in flexibility for me, says Engle, who starred as Jazz, who tries to dance away her problems. A big lesson inflexibility.

Engle, a daughter of Ivan and Karen Engle, 336 George Mill- ersville, is excited about attending Hofstra, which is close to New York City. She has definite hopes of getting work in the New York theater and when I asked her if she wanted to be a star someday, she smiled and said, Sure, why not? Its flattering. If anyone can do it, it will be Deborah Engle. At 18, shes already proven that she can do just about anything. OFESUGGESTEDfETAL 6 Month? Same As Cas IS With new statewide regulations over the spreading of sewage sludge stirring an already controversial issue, an educational sludge forum for the public will be held in Lancaster Friday.

2 drunk-driving arrests same day A Denver man compiled two drunk driving arrests within a three-hour period on Sunday afternoon, East Cocalico Township police said. After his second arrest, Colin Stephens, 24, of 611 Adams Denver, was committed to Lancaster County Prison in default of $30,000 bail, police said. Both times Stephens refused tests for blood-alcohol content, police said. The first arrest was at 12:28 a.m. Police said Stephens was traveling east on Main Street in Denver when he struck a parked vehicle.

Stephens fled the scene, but was identified as the alleged hit-run driver and followed to a convenience store, police said. Police took Stephens home after arresting him for driving while under the influence of intoxicants and a hit-run violation. But he didnt stay there. At 3:14 a.m. Sunday, East Cocalico Township police stopped Stephens when they saw him driving erratically at Weaver Road and South Second Street, Denver.

Again, he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was charged with alleged drunk driving, police said.
