10 The NAPA REGISTER Thursday, December 28, 1989 njy the outdoors GEORGE CARL DISCOVER THE MARSHES of the North Bay. With the holidays here and unseasonably dry weather continuing, lets look at a trip to our bay marshes. Theres more to see and enjoy in the north bay marshes. Hundreds of birds. From shore birds to waterfowl, red wings to visiting egrets, peolicans and geese.

The list doubles in the winter with migrating birds and these marshes are generally accessible only by boat. Ever wonder how much of an area is available to us? Jim Swanson of the Department of Fish and Game sent me this summary (does not include Solano County and Grizzly Island): CDFG CONTROLLED LANDS NORTH BAY, VALLEJO THROUGH MARIN COUNTIES Site name, acreage: PETALUMA MARSH STATE WILDLIFE AREA Petaluma Marsh 1,844 Register Outdoors Writer LOCATION: Lee Williams Bam Shaht Cocktails at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. Dancing 9 pin. to dmght MENU: All the crab you can eat, spaghetti with French bread, salad and wine, with free soft drinks for all desiated.np'sSd door and raffle prizes. SACRAMENTO California voters will decide in June if mountain' lion hunting should be restricted and leg-hold traps be banned. Secretary of State March Fong Eu said Tuesday that an initiative sponsored by environmentalists has collected enough vd signatures to appear on the June 1990 ballot. Initiative sponsors submitted about 425,000 signatures more than the 372,000 needed to qualify.

The measure would outlaw mountain lion hunting except to protect life or livestock, set aside $30 million a year to protect wildlife habitats and bar the use of poison, leg-hold or metal-jawed traps and snares. OUTDOOR NOTES: Steelhead to 10 pounds in the Russian River near Healdsburg. Dont forget youll need a new fishing license after Jan. 1. Moscone Center Boat and RV Show, Dec.

30-Jan. 7. The spotted owl is getting another six months protection while fish and wildlife service studies the owls old forest habitat. Only two weeks left to hunt ducks. My New Years wish list: That all available water not contracted for be allowed to flow down the SacramentoSan Joaquin rivers.

Water is essential as well as our most valuable resource and if this is not allowed the BayDelta estuary will fail to exist as we know it. TT Alsom we need water for the hatchery at Lake Hennessey to resume raising steelhead trout. We need more habitat at Lake Hennessey for young bass to survive and we need a local Napa location to hold a youth pheasant hunt in Fall 1990. Finally, wish we could open Rector Dam to the general public for fishing and camping whats yourwish? Next week a look at 1990 with DFG Regional Director Brian Hunter. 278 129 4 53 195 1 4 20 3 13 2,544 216 292 745 38 69 105 4 174 188 107 528 1 1 2,486 621 10,350 40 Hana Ranch Days Island Black Point Toy Parcel Rush Creek Additional Parcels No.

Now the hikers, backpackers and bird watchers who visit nine state-owned reserves will be asked to make a contribution of $2 a day or $10 a year. The Northern California wildlife habitats include Grizzly Island in Solano County, with its tule elk and river otters, and Elkhom Slough in Monterey County, with its migratory birds. The department is inaugurating the new fees because income from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses is dropping. The added revenue, expected to be as much as $5 million in the next 18 months, will be used to improve the wildlife habitats and to provide guided tours, lectures, nature trails and photographers blinds. This program is expected to attract more nature lovers to visit California wildlife reserves and to give them a chance to make their own contribution in protecting the states vanishing wild lands and endangered species.

SKYLINE PARK CRAB FEED Skyline Park Citizens Association will be hosting a crab feed on Saturday, Jan. 13, 1990. This event is a fund raiser for Skyline Wilderness Park and the entire proceeds will be used to help maintain the parkin the coming year. Sanders top rookie Sturgeon catch of the day The latest Northern California fishing updates; listing area, outlet, contact, telephone number and report: Don Turner Register Fishing Columnist He led the NFC with 1,470 yards, just 10 behind league leader Christian Okoye of Kansas City. On Wednesday, Sanders and Okoye were named to the AP All-Pro team.

Its a tremendous honor, Sanders said. But it is really an indication of how our offense played as a whole. I didnt feel at a disadvantage by missing training camp. I missed a little hitting. That didnt pose many disadvantages at all as far as the offense.

I was able to learn as I went along, week to week. So, apparently, did the Lions, who won their final five games to escape last place in the NFC Central. Their run shoot attack got going in the second half of the season, thanks greatly to Sanders. By BARRY WILNER Associated Press Writer NEW YORK Barry Sanders, going from record-setting collegian to sensational NFL rookie, was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year by The Associated Press today. In balloting by 70 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league, Sanders was a near-unanimous choice with 69 votes.
