12 -The Napa Valley REGISTER Monday, Jane 10, 1991 Allison handed Banquet 300 after Rudds humping incident gave his speeches and handed out kisses, he and Rudd met with NASCAR for two hours before it was decided Rudd would be given a five-second penalty, dropping him into second place, one second ahead of third-place Rusty Wallace. Ernie Irvan was fourth and Ken Schrader rounded out the top five. Ricky was on the inside, Wilson said. Once he took the lead, all he had to do was complete the race. I knew Ricky was waiting to make his move on the last lap.

In turn 11, he went for it, they bumped and he took advantage of it. I would have too. But Wilsons argument that the black flag was put out too late for rough driving was floored. When I saw the black flag, I thought it was for tire smoke, not for what happened when they touched, Wilson said. They posted him for the checker (by giving him the white flag).

It doesnt make any sense. The incident that occured was felt that it was unnecessary and avoidable, said NASCAR vice-president for competition Les Richter. Its fair. The five seconds put Ricky back into the position that he was in before the Ironically, it was Allison who took the lead when Kendall and Martin bumped on lap 70, knocking Martin out of the running and forcing Kendall to the pits with a flat left tire. I could see something was going to happen between Martin and Kendall, Allison said.

I gave myself a margin, and when Martin caught Tommy, he slid out and I took the inside. I knew it was going to be tough beating Ricky to the checkered flag. Allison agreed with NASCARs decision. I had the inside line and I didnt, cut anybody off and I was bumped from behind. I dont think he did it on purpose.

I would expect that, from anybody on the circuit if the roles had been reversed, I would expect what happened to. happen. Im not saying he did it on purpose, but it couldve been avoided. Besides, I would have raced him cleanly. The only serious accident on the day came when Richard Petty was-taken by ambulance after smashing his car into an embankment.

Petty was released from the hospital, but his car was destroyed. Rudd crossed the finish line first, but was given the black flag and Allison took the checkered flag to win the Banquet 300 at Sears Point International Raceway Sunday.

Or did he win? Nobody from NASCAR has told us we havent won yet, said Allison an hour after the race. Heres why: With Allison leading on lap 73 of the 74-lap race and Rudd in hot pursuit, the two drivers jockeyed for position heading into turn 11. Allison still held the advantage on the inside and Rudd tried to pass, bumping Allison from behind. Allisons car spun out and Rudd cleared him to take the lead. Rudd then took the white flag signaling one lap to go, but NASCAR notified Rudds pit that he would be black-flagged for rough driving.

Why penalize us? said Rudds crew chief Waddell Wilson.
