His daughter, Patti, is an executive with a bank in California and his son, Morgan, is a computer expert. He said he's glad to be back on stage because he "had the itch." And "Sugar Babies" is just the right vehicle to bring back Pinky Lee. A mix of music and comedy, the musical celebrates the Ciolden Age of Burlesque.

Pinky Lee's been the No. 1 nerd and the top banana for years in everything from burlesque to his newest role, "Sugar Babies," at the Kirby Center Thursday and Friday. Lee was lured away from retirement at his home in Mission Viejo, to appear in the role Mickey Rooney originated on Broadway in 1979.

The touring version of "Sugar Babies" was rehearsing at the John Houseman Theater in New York City where Pinky Lee took a break to talk to The Morning Times. "The reason I came into this job is because the ham in me asked me to take it," Lee explained. He said he's been idle these past few years, taking it easy. It's only right, he said, since Pinky Lee's been on the stage since the age of three. Although it's hard to figure how old Lee really is since he won't disclose any numbers, he's been in show business more than 40 years.

Pinky Lee has performed all over the including the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area back in the days of burlesque. He remembers performing a vaudeville show at a theater in Wilkes-Barre. His voice heats up. "That's right," he recalls. "I had a lot of fun playing Wilkes-Barre, except I had bought a brand new overcoat and performing there.

Wilkes-Barre owes me an overcoat," he giggles. Lee, born Pinkus Leff his grandfather was also named Pinkus started performing at the age of three. He had an exceptional voice and a knack for humor. Soon after, the railroad company his father worked for transferred the family from St. Paul to Chicago. It was just what Pinky needed. He would visit the burlesque houses and bring entertainers back to the Leff home. His parents couldn't afford to give him lessons in singing and acting, so Pinky would offer them a meal courtesy of his mother and in return they would teach him their skills.

One morning, Pinky woke" up to find that his grand falsetto had turned to a croak. His voice had changed and it seemed he would have to give up his dreams of being on the stage. His mother, thinking the child would never make it in-show business, decided that Pinkus would become a lawyer. In an effort to improve his speech and perfect his public speaking skills, Pinky spoke at a high school program. He was mocked by the students and got so nervous, he forgot his prepared speech.

He began to ad lib and was so funny, friends and enemies thought it was planned. Born with a lisp, the speech problem that had plagued him through high school would later become a stepping stone to success. "The stage was where I longed," Pinky said. Crediting Phil Silvers with giving him his start, a guest spot on the Rudy Valle show led to Pinky's own radio show. From there it was Broadway, musicals, nightclubs, and MICKCV GANNON'S 1923 SANDERSON AVE.

"Ed Sullivan" fans liked Pinky so much he stayed on for eleven weeks. And television was where Pinky Lee left his mark. Kids tuned in each Saturday to watch the funny guy with the lisp and the infectious grin "The Pinky Lee Show." The show aired for four seasons, from 1954 to 1958, but it had its ups and downs. An unfortunate incident happened while Pinky was taping the show. During a "Cinderella" skit, the comedian was to supposed to get hit on the head with a bottle made out of thin plaster of Paris.

But when it was time for the pratfall, a bottle made of solid plaster of Paris was used instead. Pinky says he was RUSTY NAIL 732 SOUTH IRVING flV6. 961-9380 SATURDAY, JAN. 21 EAST COAST SUNDAY, JAN. 22 SECRET CITY CLUB MARGARET Lounge Restaurant 1610 Washburn St.
